Transcription HERO TWINS .
CAPTAIN GRENFELL V.C. , KILLED .
Captain Francis Grenfell , V.C. , was kuled at the front last Monday . The news is now made public in the announcement of a ser vice to be held at St. Peter's , Eaton - square , on Wednesday in memory of him and his twin brother , who was killed in Flanders on September 14 .
Captain Francis Grenfell was one of the first nine V.C.s of the war . He gave an added glory to the name of the 9th Tancers .
CAPTAIN GRENFELL , V.C.
by saving the guns at Doubon on August 24. His brother , Captain " Rivy " Gren fell - also of the 9th Lancers - and he were inseparable , and when he died in Septem ber Captain Francis Grenfell wrote as fol lows to a friend at Eton : " Well , we've at last , been parted , and you who with difficulty used to part us after fighting in the old days will know what that means to me . "
HOW HE WON THE V.C.
The deed which will ever be associated with the name of Francis Grenfell was that of August when two of our guns , un manned , lay within grasp of the enemy . " We've got to get those guns back , " said Captain Grenfell ; " who's going to volun teer for the job ? " Twenty - four men stepped ont . They started ; and the bullets fell around them .
And
" It's all right , " cried out their leader . " Come along ! They can't hit us . " in the face of a murderous fire the guns were saved . Only three of our men were hit . Later in the day Captain Grenfell received a bullét in the thigh and had two fingers injured . While they were waiting for the ambulance a motor - car drove up . " That's what I want , " said Captain Gren fell . What's the use of an ambulance
to me ? Take me back to the firing line ! " And he went .
Captain Francis Grenfell was a nephew
of Lord Grenfell . He saw active service
in South Africa and was for his bravery awarded the Queen's Medal with five clasps .
He joined the 9th Lancers in 1905 as a lieutenant ; he was made a captain two years ago . He was a well - known polo player .

I have endeavoured to base my career on his example . He has , since the death of my father , done everything that a father could do for me . 1 should also like to thank all my brothers and sis ters for their kindness , generosity , and hos pitality to me . No junior member of a family could have been blessed with more happy relations . My special thanks due to the Duke of Westminster for his great generosity and kindness to me on many occasions . No
