OLD COMRADES ' FINE TIME AT MOOLTAN BARRACKS .
The week - end was a memorable one at Mooltan Barracks , Tidworth , for over 70 Old Comrades of the 9th Queen's Royal Lan cers , as well as former officers , spent the time with the regiment , and found the Lancers of to - day not only thoroughly effi cient soldiers , but admirable hosts .
It was natural that many of these visitors were much impressed by the smartness of the regiment and the neat appearance of the barrack blocks . The profusion of colour in the flower beds , the velvety lawns and the sincerity of the welcome they received from Lieut , -Col . J , J. Kingstone ( the com manding officer ) down to the youngest trooper was a happy augury .
There was some rain on Saturday , but it did not damp enthusiasm , and the sports on Mooltan Arena gave the Old 9th an oppor tunity of judging the horsemanship and skill at arms of the New , and incidentally an opportunity of taking part in some of the events . The open jumping produced a very close effort for premier place , Cpl . Shimmel and Mr. Vere Laurie , of the regiment , tieing on two rounds for first place , and the N.C.O. , as a result of the third round , getting first place by half a fault . Mr. R. G. Fanshawe , of the 16 / 5th Lancers , was placed third . The handy hunter competition saw an at tractive entry , and Sergt . Hardinge was placed first , L. - Cpl . Ambrose second and Cpl . Shimmel third . The mixed relay race was won by 1st Troop , B Squadron ( L. - Cpl . Mar shall , Tprs Latter , Peake , Woodcock , Spen ser and Grey ) , and 3rd Troop , C Squadron were second ( L. - Cpls . Peck and Harris , Tprs . Hancox , Pettit , Northam and Marshall ) . The tent pegging went to C Squadron ( Sergts . Miles and Donnley , Cpl . Shimmel and L. - Cpl . Madgewick ) , the musical chairs to Tpr . Waite , with Tpr . Parton second . In the mounted potato race Cpl . Williams , of A Squadron , was placed first , with Tpr . Woodcock , of B , second .
The tug - of - war between the Old Comrades and the Sergeants Mess was a most enjoy able affair , and the Old Comrades won . At the conclusion of the proceedings Mrs. Kingstone , wife of the commanding officer , presented the prizes .
The Tattoo visit wound up the day , and the visitors were delighted with the regi ment's part in the performance . Perhaps some of them remembered how they , too , had been performers . It was fitting that Gen. Beale Browne , acting colonel of the regiment during the absence on duty abroad of the colonel , Gen. Sir David Campbell , should take the salute as the performers came past the stands .
It had been a strenuous day , but many guests were early astir on Sunday and took deep interest in the stables and the mechanical vehicles , for though the Lancers are still a mounted regiment in a true sense , they have been partially mechanised to meet modern needs . Then on to church at the head of the regiment , preceded by the regi mental band , where the Senior Chaplain ( Rev. S. B. Pelling ) gave an appropriate address .
In the afternoon the festivities wound up with a cricket match against the Sergeants Mess .
