L. AND S. HUNT MEETING
TANTORO'S THIRD SUCCESS
THE Linlithgow and Stirlingshire Hunt point to - point race meeting was held at Oatridge on Saturday . There were six events and , with good fields and the course in excellent condition , first . rate sport was enjoyed by an attendance which was probably greater than usual .
The light - weight race , with which the pro gramme commenced , was easily won by Mr G. E. Robertson's The Bograt II . , which was favourite , although it had failed to get a place in the Adjacent Hunts ' Race at the Lauderdale meeting . Mr G. B. Sanderson's Venture led for part of the journey , but could not equal the pace of The Bog . rat II . once it had gone to the front .
In the Adjacent Hunts ' race for ladies , the best fancied candidate was Mrs C. Younger's Leicester , a Buccleuch horse . The winner , however , proved to be an Eglinton hunter , Mrs Ena S. Donald's St Philomena with the owner in the saddle , the excellent time of eight minutes for the three and a half miles course being returned .
Thirteen horses came under the starter's orders for the Nomination Race , and of these Major A. D. Thomson's Tantoro , which had already re corded wins at the North Northumberland and Border Hunts meetings , was made favourite . It was a closely - contested race , and Mr H. Mont gomerie's Parse Partout and Mr R. K. Dalziel's Quickstep II . both came down near the end of the race when well placed . In the result Tantoro won by four lengths from the Lanarkshire and Ren frewshire representative , Mr J. Keith Donaldson's Leal .
GRAND NATIONAL RIDER'S SUCCESS Mr F. C. Furlong , who rode second in the Grand National , won the 9th Lancers ' light - weight chal lenge trophy with De Reszke II . , which had been unlucky at the Border meeting , but which for this event was a warm favourite . Twenty lengths separated it at the winning post from Mr E. R. Pettit's Indus , which in turn was well ahead of Mr M. A. A. Little's Vivandiere II . On return ing to the paddock after the race Indus collapsed and shortly afterwards expired .
The heavy - weight race resulted in a splendid win for Miss Betty Mitchell's Border Chief , which upset calculations in passing the post three lengths in front of the favourite , Mr G. B. Sanderson's Decider , which had been placed second in the adjacent hunts race at the Eglinton meeting .
The popular fancy for the 9th Lancers heavy weight challenge trophy was Captain G. E. Prior Palmer's Big Boy , but Mr G. H. Grosvenor's Martygrove showed unexpected speed and staying power , and got the verdict by two lengths .
At the close of the racing the cups were pre sonted to the winners by the Marchioness of Linlithgow . The following were amongst those present :

Approaching the racecourse for the last time Kellsboro ' Jack and Pelorus Jack were out in front , with Delaneige close to them , and , so it seemed to me , going the best of the three . Once on the THE GRAND NATIONAL racecourse Delaneige , admirably ridden by Moloney , made his effort , and it seemed then that he would draw up to and pass the two horses in front of him . He , however , has his limitations as to dis
ance , and he was beaten half a mile from home and left the race to the other two . They jumped the penultimate fence side by side , and came to the last fence with nothing to choose between them . Per
sonally I thought that Pelorus Jack was going just the easier of the two , although , naturally after such a race , neither was going easily or comfort . Williams , as good a rider as ever there was over this full of eagerness , seemed , to me , to ride course , left his horse to the fence ; Stott , his horse at the fence , and down he came , touching the top of it and crumpling up on landing . Kellsboro ' Jack , tired and weary but , I hope , happy and proud , as certainly should have been his rider , held on to the end , and won a gallant race by three lengths from Really True , with Slater just beaten for second place .
All the way from the last fence it seemed that either of these two might catch the leader , but Williams and Kells . boro ' Jack held on . It would have been nice to have seen Stott win , for he has not always had the best of luck . but still it was really pleasant to see Williams ride the winner , for he is a great horseman , as ha been pointed out many times in the Notes , and his Grand National lu before has been as bad as it could ha been .
RACING
VICTORY OF KELLSBORO '
JACK
FROM OUR RACING CORRESPONDENT
with
Mrs. Ambrose Clark , an American lady whose husband is also a well - known owner of horses in this country under National Hunt Rules , won the Grand National yesterday Kellsboro ' Jack , a seven - year - old gelding by Jackdaw -famous as the sire of Brown Jack ridden by Dudley Williams and trained by Ivor Anthony . This gelding won by three lengths from Really True , who beat Slater by a neck for second place . Delaneige was fourth , Alpine Hut fifth , and last year's winner , Forbra , sixth , just in front of
Egremont .
chance of Annandale , for , contrary to his custom , Theras jumped to the left and not to the right and collided with Annandale and the two came down .
So many horses passed the winning post that I do not intend to mention them all by name . Remus , who had always been well placed and generally in the lead , finished the course , but at his own pace , being beaten either by want of stamina or condition soon after jumping Valentine's the second time , up to which fence he had been going like a winner . The time for the race was the fastest ever recorded , being 9min . 27 2-5sec . The previous best was Grakle's 9min . 31sec . The time sug gests that the conditions for the race were the best ever known , and such the case . The weather was perfect , just what one expects and seldom finds on a spring day in this country , fresh cool air and a shining sun . The going was perfect , and no one , unless it be the indi vidual who looks after the weather , deserves more the thanks of the visitors to the course and the runners in the race than the new Clerk of the Course , Mr. Wood , who has devoted hours of his time to the care of the turf on this historic course .

THE SECOND TIME ROUND
By the time that Becher's was reached
the second time Gregalach had begun to lose ground , but Remus was still going well , and had by this time got the better of Colliery Band . So easily was he going , and so cleanly and ably was he jumping , that it seemed then that he might win if he could hold off Kellsboro ' Jack , who was also making never a mistake at a fence . Golden Miller was not jumping so well , but he was still close up , as were Coup de Chapeau , and , by this time , Pelorus Jack , who had made up ground rapidly down the far side of the course . Golden Miller fell at the Canal Turn . beaten at the time , and Leader may have been lucky to escape injury . Annandale was going well now , as was Theras , but still the race seemed to be between Remus and Kellsboro ' Jack . Soon there was to come a great change in the state of affairs . Just before Valentine's the second
time round Gregalach was pulled up . He had broken a bloodvessel about the time he jumped Becher's . Remus , from going easily , blew up and was out of the race , and Kellsboro ' Jack was left in front , with Pelorus Jack , a stable companion of Gregalach's .. Alpine Hut was improving , as were Slater and others . Annandale and Delaneige were there with obvious chances . Valentine's put an end to the
By this time the field was stretched out , and the horses at the back could not be noticed if the progress of the leaders was to be considered . I could see Gregalach , Holmes , Heartbreak Hill , Golden Miller , and Delaneige well placed . Heartbreak Hill vanished at the Canal Turn , where she fell , and Colliery Band turned for home the first time round just in front of Remus , a position which he soon surrendered . When the racecourse was reached for the first time , how ever , Remus and Colliery Band were in front , followed still by Kellsboro ' Jack . The field , still as large as ever I have seen a field in this race at this time , swept up the racecourse to the famous Chair Jump , over which they came , a sight which all who saw it surely will never forget . Remus and Colliery Band landed over the water side by side , several lengths in front of their rivals , and so the field swept out once more into the country , with the same horses still in the lead .

LIVERPOOL , Friday . It is doubtful if better weather conditions ever favoured Grand National Day at Aintree . The brilliant sunshine was in marked contrast to what has been experienced here in past years , and with the light perfect , visitors were able to follow practically the whole of the incidents in what is unquestionably the most spectacular race of the season .
Those who have never witnessed a " National " can form no idea of the enthusiasm that is worked up during the progress of the race , and from the time that the 34 horses were dispatched on their long and arduous journey until Mr F. Ambrose Clark's great steeplechaser , Kellsboro ' Jack , had passed the judge , three lengths in front of Really True and Slater , with 16 others trailing behind , the utmost excitement prevailed .

The culminating point was reached when Pelorus Jack and Kellsboro ' Jack came to the last fence practically level , when the former fell .

Race - Riding Regiment
With Mr. Walwyn , who learned race riding under Tom Rayson , Mr. Frank Furlong , and Capt . Prior - Palmer , the 9th Lancers is becoming again as great a race . riding regiment as it was in the days just before the war , when Mr. Lennox - Harvey , Mr. Frank Crossley , and others were holding their own against all comers . It was with the 9th Lancers , too , that Gen. Sir David Campbell , who won the Grand National on The Soarer in 1896 , did all his regimenta ! soldiering .
