It was from Moottan Barracks , Tidworth precisely the sema barracks they now occupy that they went overseas to Flanders in 1914 . The regiment served at Mons , in the Retreat from Mons , on the Marne and Aisne , at Messines and at Ypres in the first year of the war . They were in the Hindenburg Line and the pursuit to Mons in 1918 . They have now spent two years at Edinburgh , their first home station after five years in India . While in Scotland the 9th Lancers have been engaged in local civilian football - there being no military leagues - but they entered for the Cavalry Cup , from which they were knocked out in the semi final by the Scots Greys , who be came runners - up . The Lancers are an addition to Tidworth's garrison boxing strength , and shortly before leav ing Scotland they beat the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in an inter - unit team match . They are now the second Lancer regiment in the garrison , the 16th / 5th Lancers being also at Tidworth . GREYS ' 99 RETURN amous Regiment This Week in Edinburgh 1933 . 66 HOME - COMING " ARRANGE MENTS After an absence of four years , the mous regiment , The Royal Scots Greys cotland's only cavalry unit- arrive back in dinburgh this week from Tidworth to take up rrison again at Redford Barracks , Colinton . They exchange stations with another noted regi ent , the 9th ( Queen's Royal Lancers , who came Redford from India nearly two years ago , and no will transfer to Mooltan Barracks in the Salis iry Plain area occupied by the Greys . For both regiments it will be a case of " return g home . " The Scots Greys , who recruit only in cotland , look upon the Capital as their home . any local men are serving in their ranks , and is will be the third occasion in post - war years at the regiment has been stationed at Redford . Most of the men of the 9th Lancers hail from e Midlands and the South . Before coming to dinburgh , the regiment was stationed in India for en years , and it is only natural that their antici ation of their return to England should be a ry happy one . The Lancers will say " Goodbye " to Edinburgh Friday evening . Simultaneously , the " Greys " ill leave Tidworth , and be welcomed " home on aturday morning . Three special trains have been chartered for the ransportation of the troops , their wives and child en , and the baggage and horses of each regiment o its new station . The railway siding at Gorgio vill be the scene of departure and arrival , the oldiers having to march the distance of about two ailes to Redford Barracks . The " terrible Greys , " as Napoleon referred to he Scots regiment at Waterloo , are under the ommand of Licut . - Colonel G. F. A. Pigot - Moodie . M.C. , and will come to Edinburgh about 400 trong , the preparations for their arrival at Red ord Barracks being in the hands of an advance party of 17 officers and men , who arrived several lays ago . Lancers ' Popularity The entire personnel and effects of the regiment vill be split up among the three trains , the times of arrival of which at Gorgie on Saturday morning re given as 6.10 , 8 o'clock , and 9.17 . On the third rain will travel the women and children - num bering 38 and 68 respectively - and they will be conveyed , probably by bus , to their quarters at the oarracks . Two hundred and twenty horses , all beautiful greys , are to brought North with the regiment . At Redford Barracks for some days past there has been strenuous activity for all ranks of the Lancers . The task of packing up a regiment's it - bags , so to speak , is not at all a light matter ; hundred and one tasks have to be done in order " " hat when the day of " flitting comes everything , ight to the entraining of the last man and horse , vill work without a hitch . It is expected that the first batch of troops will eave the barracks at roughly 2.30 in the afternoon , in addition to the 400 officers and men of the regi nent , 43 women and 26 children will make the ourney to the South . The times of departure of he three trains in which they will travel is stated . s 4.10 , 5.15 , and 6.50 p.m. Many friendships have been formed by the ancers during their stay in Edinburgh , where hey have achieved a wide measure of popularity mong the citizens . On the occasions on which hey have taken part in military . ceremonial parades , and in the pageantry connected with he Lord High Commissioner their smartness has always excited keen admiration . Their departure vill be regretted particularly in Edinburgh sport ng circles , in which they have taken a creditable art during two seasons . 3 . 19 33 The opening meet of the 9th Lancers Beagles took place yesterday from Hatton Mains Farm , Midlothian .
