POLO 1933 . THE CHAMPION CUP VICTORY OF JAIPUR FROM OUR POLO CORRESPONDENT The Maharajah of Jaipur's team beat Sir Ian Walker's Osmaston side in the final tie of the Champion Cup at Hurlingham yesterday by 11 goals to six after a very fine game , which was played in glorious weather , and was watched by a large attendance of spectators . Osmaston alone of the English sides seem capable of extending the Indians , and they certainly gave them a good run for their money yesterday . If the game had been played under handicap Osmaston would have been entitled to a start of four goals and a half , which proves that there is not much wrong with the handicapping , in this case at any rate . The ground played very well and the game was admirably umpired by Captain F. A. Gill and Lieutenant - Colonel J. R. C. Gannon . After the match Lady Violet Astor presented the cup to the Maharajah of Jaipur to the accompani ment of much applause , which our visitors had well earned . Although beaten , Osmaston , who will most probably meet Jaipur in the final of the Roehampton Open Cup - if the draw is kind on Satur day , July 8 , have every reason to be pleased with themselves as they made a gallant fight against a side that will not be beaten in this country . the Captain Roark was in splendid form and got through a tremendous amount of work , while Sir Ian Walker played about his Jaipur . best game of the season . Captain Prior Palmer improved after a shaky start , and Major Harrison held up many dangerous looking attacks . In addition to number of goals scored Jaipur hit behind their opponents ' line eight times to seven by Osmaston , which gives a very fair indication of the general run of the play . The Indians all played well - something extraordinary would have to happen for them not to do so - but Rao Raja Hanut Singh was not quite so accurate as he usually is . Their hitting , whether on the forehand or the backhand , was much longer than that of Osmaston , with the possible exception of Captain Roark , and as they were mounted on faster ponies there could only be one result to the match . THE PLAY Captain Roark gave his side's sup porters cause for jubilation when he went through the game in the first minute of play , never hitting the ball more than 10 or 12 yards , and scored a brilliant goal . It is curious how often Jaipur's opponents hit the first goal , a little encouragement perhaps . Anyway it was not allowed to encourage Osmaston for long , as Rao Raja Abhey Singh quickly equalized from a cleverly cut hit - up to goal by Rao Raja Hanut Singh , and Raj Kumar Prithi Singh put Jaipur in front with a fine cross - shot from the throw - in . The last - named player got clear away a minute later from a hit - up by the Maharajah of Jaipur , and , as he is not in the habit of missing from straight in front of goal , that made the score - board read 3-1 . Rao Raja Abhey Singh scored from a really amazing angle early in the second chukker , but then Osmaston rallied and Sir lan Walker hit a good goal from a long pass by Captain Roark . Walker next hit through , following clever play by Captain Roark , and Osmaston fully held their own for a time . Captain Roark was rather a long way wide , for him , twice in the third period , and Jaipur showed their gratitude by increasing their lead through Raj Kumar Prithi Singh , who scored with a neat near - side shot from a pass by Rao Raja Hanut Singh . Sir Ian Walker narrowly missed after a good run by Captain Roark , but from the hit - out the latter beat Rao Raja Hanut Singh cleverly and hit through , the score at half - time being seven goals to four in favour of Jaipur . A really great shot by the Maharajah of Jaipur , taken from near the boards and well beyond the 60 yards line , put the Indians three up again , and Raj Kumar Prithi Singh made it four with a fierce drive from a pass by his No. 2. Sir lan Jaipur had the better of the fourth chukker , and Rao Raja Abhey Singh put them farther ahead with a splendid cross shot . Osmaston attacked , but could not score , and , from a long hit - up by the Maharajah of Jaipur , Rao Raja Hanut Singh hit a simple goal . Raj Kumar Prithi Singh somehow scooped the ball back as it was about to cross Osmaston's Singh , and that was doubie figures for line from a shot by Rao Raja Abhey Osmaston resolutely refused to become depressed , however , and , after Major Harrison and Captain Prior - Palmer had each made a good save , a fine run by Captain Roark gave Sir Ian Walker the chance to hit his third goal . This was in the fifth chukker , during which Osmaston kept their goal intact , thanks to the fine defence of Captain Prior - Palmer The final period and Major Harrison . was also evenly contested , Rao Raja Abhey Singh hitting the only goal scored by eithe side , although both Captain Roark and Captain Prior - Palmer went very close for Osmaston , and so ended a really good game of polo . The teams were : JAIPUR Raj Kumar Prithi Singh , No. 1 : Rao Raja Abhey Singh , No. 2 : Rao Raja Hanut Singh , No. 3 : and the Maharajah of Jaipur , back . OSMASTON . - Sir Jan Walker , No. 1 ; Captain C. T. I. Roark , No. 2 ; Captain G. E. Prior - Palmer , No. 3 ; and Major J. F. Harrison , back . POLO . POLO WEEK AT OSMASTON . 1933 INTER - REGIMENTAL CUP . THE ARMY IN INDIA . Five Teams in This Year's Tournament . BALL AT ASHBOURNE TOWN HALL . summer The Osmaston Manor polo tournament , first held in 1930 , has become one of the most popular social and sporting events of the in Derbyshire . This year the tournament will be commenced on Monday . July 31st , and the teams competing will be the 9th Royal Lancers . Someries House . Norton Bavant , Wykham Park , and , of course , Osmaston . Such sides should be able to provide the quality of sport which the public has learnt to expect . ( By Our Polo Correspondent . ) Before the war the Indian Inter - Regimental tournament was invariably won by an English regiment . Since the competition was revived in 1921 , however , the reverse has been the case , native Indian regiments having won every time until this year , when the 10th Hussars were successful . Eight teams com peted this season , four of them , being English regiments , namely the 10th Hussars , the Royal Dragoons , the 13th - 18th Hussars , and the 15th Hussars . The ultimate winners beat Probyn's Horse in the first round and the 15th Lancers in the semi - final . The other finalists , the 15th Hussars , knocked out the 13th - 18th Hussars and the Royal Dragoons before going down to the 10th Hussars by seven goals to three . The winners were represented by Mr. M. N. E. Macmullen , Captain C. B. C. Harvey , Major C. H. Gairdner , who will be home on leave and playing in London this summer , and Cap tain D. Dawnay . The Indian Inter - Regimental tournament was inaugurated a year before the home com petition , in 1877 , and , with lapses occasioned by the Afghan War , 1879-1880 , and the Great War , there have been forty - eight contests to date . Two regiments stand out for the num ber of their successes in India , the 10th Hussars , with nine victories , and the 9th Lancers , with six . Incidentally , it is interest ing to recall that these two regiments were responsible for the introduction of polo into England . The 10th Hussars set up a record for India by winning the tournament for six years in succession , from 1907 to 1912 in clusive . The 17th / 21st Lancers , of course , won the home Inter - Regimental seven times running , from 1920 to 1926 inclusive , besides gaining five other victories , and they have also been successful four times in India . The 9th Lancers , who won the Indian Inter Regimental for the first two years it was played , had three successive yictories from 1933 1883 to 1885 , and then , after coming home and winning the home competition at Hurling ham on four occasions , returned to India and won again out there in 1906. The 15th Hus sars have four victories to their credit in consecutive years starting in 1902 , while the Durham Light Infantry won the Cup three years running , from 1896 to 1898. The only other infantry regiment to register a success in the tournament were the 3rd Battalion The Rifle Brigade , who won two years after the D.L.I.'s great performance . The Queen's Bays won the tournament three times , and the 7th Hussars , 8th Hussars , 15th Lancers , Cen tral India Horse , and P.A.V.O. Cavalry twice each . tion that the stud of forty ponies which will While on the subject of India I may men be used by the Maharaja of Jaipur's team over here this summer left Bombay about three weeks ago . The stud is composed of English and Australian ponies , and are said to be some of the best in India . They are going direct to the Beaufort Club on arrival in this country , and will be stabled , by arrangement with Captain M. J. Kingscote , at Pinckney Court , Malmesbury . The team will consist of six players , the Maharaja of Jaipur , the Maharaja Kumar of Baria , Rao Raja Hanut Amar Singh , and Rao Raja Abbey Singh , and Singh , Raj Kumar Prithi Singh , Kumar will play at the Beaufort Club during the Spring Tournament at the end of this month . RUGBY POLO 1933 See Indians Big Crowd Again Successful A crowd numbering about 7,000 was pre sent at Spring Hill polo grounds , Rugby , yesterday , to witness the trial match be tween Jaspur and Hurlingham , with which the Rugby Polo Club's August tournament was , opened . Jaspur have carried all before them in the London tournaments this season , and have beaten every team of repute . Col. Lockett , however , had got together a very strong combination to oppose them , and after a keen , swaying struggle the Indians only just managed to win by the odd goal in 13 . At the beginning of the final period the scores were level , 5-5 , and then Hurlingham took the lead through Col. Lockett . Two goals , by Hanut Singh and Prithi Singh respectively , howeevr , enabled the Indians to maintain their unbeaten record . For Hurlingham , Capt . H. Walford was a dashing No. 1 , and he scored several really fine goals . Capt . Fanshawe , too , was a very sound No. 3 , and the other two players were well up to their standard . The Maha raja played splendidly at back , and Hanut Singh again proved his worth as a pivot , and the two forwards were never at a loss to seize an opportunity . The match was preceded by a ghly colourful parade of the Maharaja's fine string of ponies . CHAMPION CUP AT 1933 HURLINGHAM COTMORE WELLS BEATEN IN HARD GAME The Grand National Riders ' Polo Team ( Mr Ted Leader , Capt . Otto Prior - Palmer , Mr W. H. Whitbread , and Mr M. D. Blair ) who played a drawn game against the Bumpers at Hurlingham , each side scoring four times . Caft . O.L. Prior Palmer 9. Lancers . After a great fight Osmaston beat Cot more Wells in the Champion Cup second semi - final yesterday by six goals to four . Cotmore Wells , a new team , made up of D. J. Frost and H. H. Hughes , the two Merchiston forwards , and Captain G. H. Fanshawe and his brother , Major E. D. Fanshawe , of the Queen's Bays , gave Osmaston a hard game . They were all in form , particularly Captain Fanshawe , and were rather unlucky to lose . Captain Prior - Palmer was at his best for the winners , who all played well , but Captain Roark was not so out standing as usual . It was a particularly interesting game to watch , and the result was in doubt until nearing the end of the last chukker , 1-1 , 2-2 , 3-3 , and 4-4 being successively shown on the board . The scores were two all at half - time , and in the fourth period Cotmore Wells for the first time got in front at 4-3 . A despe rately contested fifth chukker was devoid of score , and Major Fanshawe's team were still leading when the last period began . It was after only four minutes ' play that Osmaston got the equalising goal , and then Captain Roark put Osmaston in front again . The game concluded with Sir Jan Walker after a good run scoring Osmas ton's sixth goal . By their victory Osmaston qualified to meet Jaipur in to - morrow's final . Sides : Osmaston .
