The Installation of the Lord High Commissioner to He General Assembly Jothe Chuvel of Scotland , Countergl 6.5.32 . IMPRESSIVE PARADE BY 2000 TROOPS Trooping of Colours and Salute at Edinburgh ' PLANES TAKE PART A spectacular ceremonial parade of Regular Army units and Territorial troops was held in the King's Park , Edinburgh , on Saturday , and attracted thousands of spectators . Lieut . - General Sir Percy P. de B. Radcliffe , K.C.B. , K.C.M.G. , General Officer Com manding - in - Chief , Scottish Command , on arrival at the saluting base was received by the general salute from the units , which formed three sides of a square . The 9th Queen's Royal Lancers , with their lances und fluttering pennants , made a fine show , and the 1st Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders , who were accompanied by their mascot pony , and the Territorial troops also presented a smart appearance . But yesterday khaki was routed from the scene , and an unusually large crowd revelled in the spectacle of military men in the grandeur of full - dress uniforme . The knowledge that a detachment of the Scots Guards , usually reserved for the pleasure of Londoners and their visitors , was to be present as guard of honour , and that the escort of the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers were to wear dress uniform , was without doubt responsible for the presence of so man ypeople along the route and at Parliament Square . The police did not have an easy task in restraining the crowds ' efforts to push farther forward than they were permitted at the latter place , and a cordon had to be drawn up in High Street . Bright sunshine added to the pleasure of the day , and the procession was shown to fine advantage as it travelled over the traditional route from the Palace of Holy . roodhouse to Princes Street , The Mound , and St Giles ' . There were cheers at many parts of the route . 1932 BRILLIANT SCENES CORDIAL GREETING TO LORD HIGH COMMISSIONER PROCESSION TO ST GILES ' CATHEDRAL The Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scot land , Sir Iain Colquhoun , yesterday carried through a number of engagements . His Grace held a levee at the Palace of Holyroodhouse , and thereafter the cus tomary procession took place to St Giles ' Cathedral , where divine service was held . On the conclusion of the service His Grace proceeded to the General Assembly for the opening proceedings . LANCERS HEAD PROCESSION When the sound of the aeroplane engines had died away , the crowds near the saluting base saw the foremost troopers of the 9th ( Queen's Royal ) Lancers , who headed the parade , approaching at a walking pace on the north side of Princes Street . Their lances slenderly erect , red - and - white pennons just fluttering in the light breeze , the cavalrymen presented a very smart appearance as they passed the saluting base four abreast . Next A few minutes before noon the Scottish Heralds and other preliminary sections of the procession drove to a side door of the Cathedral in motor cars . After a brief interval two troopers of the Lancers clattered into the Square and halted , facing the Guards , at the opposite side . They were followed by a single rider : then almost on his heels came the remainder of the half escort , and the celerity with which the horses fell into line , then stood almost . motionless , was something worth seeing . The Lancers wore their blue uniform with scarlet facings , lancers ' dress caps with trencher tops and plumes of black and white horse hair , and carried lances with réd and white pennons . They had black knee boots , blue pantaloons with a broad vellow stripe , gold Jace girdles ,, pouches and gloves of white leather . Their tunics had double - breasted yellow fronts , an evolution of the plastron or front worn in gorget the middle of last century . The total effect was a sparkling and animated military picture . WA O 6. 5. 33 The parade was led by the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers , who are seen passing through the gates at the Palace of Holyroodhouse on their way from the King's Park to Princes Street . 33w5 86 |
