By . THE OBSERVER
REYNOLDSTOWN accomplished a magnifi cent performance at Aintree yesterday when he won the Grand National for the second year in succession . He thus equalled a years - old record . The feat had been achieved 66 only on two previous occasions , by Abd - el Kader in 1850 and 1851 , and The Colonel in 1869 and 1870 .
Avenger , who was made favourite , met with a tragic fate . He fell two fences after the water jump and broke his neck .
Golden Miller , according to the jockey , was brought down at the first fence . He stood still while Williams picked himself up and re mounted . He then galloped on until he reached the Canal Turn , where he refused .
The surprise of the race was the great display of the 100 to 1 chance Davy Jones . His rider , Mr. A. B. Mildmay , was the victim of really
hard luck .
LEADING TO LAST FENCE . He made nearly all the running and was lead ing up to the last fence . As Davy Jones was approaching the jump one of his reins broke . His rider was unable to keep him on a straight line . He could not make the horse understand what was required of him , and Davy Jones ran out . He had never been off the bit up to the time the reins broke .
With ordinary luck he would probably have won , as he was at least two lengths clear at the time .

Interviewed by a Press representative , he said , " I am thoroughly delighted at the fact for 66 years . Reynoldstown was never fitter in that we have equalled a record which has stood his life . I was afraid more of the bogey attach ing to a horse winning the race two years in succession than anything else . "

REYNOLDSTOWN TRIUMPHS
DAVY JONES RUNS OUT AT LAST FENCE WHEN LEADING
Golden Miller Down at First Jump : Avenger Breaks His Neck
By HOTSPUR
LIVERPOOL , Friday .

MID tumultuous scenes of enthusiasm , Reynoldstown won the Grand National this afternoon for the second year in succession , and equalled a record that has stood for 66 years .
It was as thrilling a National as has ever been seen . At the first fence Golden Miller jumped on to a fallen horse and came down .
Then the favourite , Avenger , who started at 100 to 30 , fell at the first fence in the country when they were going round the second He broke his neck .

And as a climax to all this drama a tubed horse , Davy Jones , after making all the running , ran out when still leading at the last fence of all .
I have never seen such a thing in the
Grand National as the disappearance of his head , boke his neck . His jockey , Davy Jones when the only danger hat Rimell , was not hurt . The fence at which he came down is one threatened him was from Reynoldstown , who was lying about two lengths behind of the easiest on the course , but it finished ing on to the racecourse the second time ; one of the most prorising steeplechasers toi at the fence between Valentine's whose career , after Lord Derby made and the last open ditch ; Emancipator , Davy Jones was a useful horse on the a present of him to is trainer's head lad , hen he was going well three fences from ome ; and Rod and Gun , at the fence flat once , but had to be tubed , and had had been one of outstanding brilliance . The going , too , had dried well and was very good . The field numbered 35 and from good start Lazy Boots set off in front of Eil de Boeuf , but , as I have explained , the first fence brought disaster to these and two others as well as Golden Miller .

He had 12st 2lb to - day so that when Golden Miller went out he was left with top weight . He is a horse endowed with every asset that one demands from the high - class steeplechaser - speed , stamina , great jumping powers and , as great perhaps as any of these , high courage and high intelligence .
Then Brienz came down at the open ditch . The loose horses continuing in the race were a source of embarrassment to the jockeys and one of them ran into Buckthorn at the fence after Valentine's , when he was lying fifth , and caused him to straddle the fence . Capt . Harding , who was thrown clear , further injured the shoulder which he hurt at Shirley a fortnight ago . First Circuit Completed
