GOLDEN MILLER'S STRANGE LAPSE AT A JUMP
22 TO 1 VICTORY OF REYNOLDSTOWN
THE GRAND NATIONAL : REYNOLDSTOWN - Major Noel Furlong BLUE PRINCE - Lady Lindsay ..... THOMOND II.-Mr. J. H. Whitney
Golden Miller , the much fancied favourite , refused at a fence after Valentine's on the first round , and sent his jockey over his shoulder . He did not complete the course .
By WATCHMAN
The jockey did not ride the older horse this time , mainly because he could not do the weight . Another reason was that Reynoldstown has always been ridden by Mr. Furlong , and it was thought wise
not to entrust him
LIVERPOOL , Friday .
Bravo , Mr. Frank Furlong !
Never was a Grand National winner handled with greater coolness or better judgment . Even after the race the young amateur was still unflurried , and as he forced his horse through the surging mob in the paddock he repeatedly raised his cap in acknowledgment of the tremendous applause which he and his gallant Imount had so richly earned .

Apart from the fact that the defeat of the favourites was disappointing , no result could have been much more popular . A subaltern until last year in the 9th Lancers , Mr. Furlong showed once more that there is nothing to choose between the best
professionals and the best amateur riders over the Liverpool country .
The winner was trained by his father , Major Noel Furlong , in the Shires , and two years ago the same combination of
father and son had narrowly missed the mark with Really True .
Last year's winner looked fit to run for a kingdom . When the parade was over Gerald Wilson allowed him to stride along for a couple of furlongs , and no horse could have moved better . He lined up third from the rails in the field of 27 , and when the tapes went up he was quick to get on the move .

Mr. Furlong needed all his coolness the horse stretching himself at the drop when Thomond II . , jumping wildly to the fences . At all events the trouble , once right , collided violently with his horse at it had started , became more acute , with two fences . The young amateur told me the result that at the second last fence the that his horse had never put a foot wrong . saddle had slipped right away from Par Reynoldstown is the first black horse vin , the horse finishing with his girth over to win the race in my time . his flanks .
Favourite's Fate
What happened to Golden Miller ? The question is one which all the sporting world will be asking . Let me follow the horse , the hottest favourite ever known , in the Grand National , from the time I saw him striding round the parade ring well guarded by attendants as he was , also when led on to the course .
22 to 1
40 to 1
9 to 2
This suggestion that something was amiss with Golden Milier left his trainer , Basil Briscoe , so incredulous that later in the afternoon there was some talk of saddling him again for the Champion Steeplechase providing he is found to be all right .
Thomond II.'s display in the first cir cuit of the course was by no means faultess . Speck told me that at the jump before Becher's he landed right on top
of the fence and only just struggled over . " I was pitched on to his head . "
said
the jockey . " and it was thanks to Tim Hamey , who pulled me back , that I got into the saddle again . " Tapinois went well until they came to the chair fence , the top of which he blundered through . A few fences later saw the last of him .
At the Water
At the water Uncle Batt led from Alexena , Castle Irwell , Blue Prince , Thomond II . , Royal Ransom , Reynolds town , Bachelor Prince , Lazy Boots , Eman cipator and Master Orange , Ballybrack falling here .
At the Canal turn Castle Irwell made a mistake and swinging sharply round the angle of the course he parted company with his rider . At Valentine's Royal Ran som passed out . Now the order was Reynoldstown slightly in front of Thomond II . , with Blue Prince several lengths behind them , and so they came on to the racecourse , when Blue Prince began to close with the leaders .
It was at this point that Blue Prince's saddle began to slip . This is ascribed to
It is fair to assume that this mishap may well have robbed Lady Lindsay's horse of victory . He struggled on gamely , and his defeat by three lengths by Reynoldstown was assuredly a most
honourable failure .
Thomond II . was eight lengths behind the second , with Lazy Boots fourth , Uncle Batt fifth , and Bachelor Prince sixth , only six completing the course .
THE FURLONGS CELEBRATE
Castle Irwell took the lead as soon as they had settled down , Golden Miller being his nearest attendant until they reached Valentine's .
To celebrate their Grand National vic tory , the Furlongs - father , mother , and son - with their friends , had a party at a Liverpool hotel last night .
The tables were decorated with ribbons To this point Golden Miller was appar- in their racing colours - straw and pale ently going in his accustomed style . blue . Suddenly the shout went up " The Among the toasts were those of Rey favourite's gone ! Calamity had overtaken him two fences after Valentine's .
Jockey's Statement
Let me continue the story in Wilson's own words . " Golden Miller now ap peared to be going feelingly , and when he came to the open ditch he tried to refuse . This movement sent me on to his withers and then he hit the fence o hard that though he did not actually fall , I was sent over his shoulders . He did not give me the impression that he was quite at his best , "
The race was run in 9min . 21sec . , which
is only three - fifths of a second slower than
Golden Miller's record time last year .
The Prince of Wales had a good view of the running from Lord Sefton's private stand near the Canal turn .
QUORN STOPS TO HEAR THE RESULT
During the meet of the Quorn Hunt near Melton Mowbray , a passing motorist with a wireless set in his car shouted to the field that Reynoldstown had won the Grand National .
The riders stopped and cheered , for Mr. F. Furlong , who rode the winner , is a popular follower of Leicestershire packs . His father , the owner of the winning horse , lives at Skeffington Hall , near Leicester .

The finish was on Mr. Greenham's land , and he kindly allowed a tent to be erected , where the officers of the Regiment entertained over 200 specta

It was feared that the ground would be too hard , but a fall of snow overnight made the going somewhat deep and holding , in spite of which all the 16 starters finished with only four falls ( the Wheathill Brook claimed two victims w thout total immersion ) , and no horses finished unduly distressed .
