Transcription THE NEW FIELD ARMY
Dec - 1935
25 REGIMENTS TO BE MECHANIZED
Recent events have caused the plans for increasing the proportion of mechanized units in the Army to be expedited , and the provision of the necessary money will be spread over till 1938. The scheme announced yesterday is the result of several years of experiment . Forecasts of the changes appeared in The Times on August 17 , 1934 , and on later dates up to the end of that year , and the official an nouncement covers the details then given and adds new ones .
In the first place the plan is now for three cavalry brigades to be mechanized , whereas the original idea was to mechanize one and use it with a horsed brigade in the new mobile division which takes the place of the Cavalry Division . This horsed brigade was to have been mechanized when money became avail able . Four cavalry regiments will now be equipped with tanks , and exactly half of the line cavalry will be mechanized , 10 regiments remaining horsed , of which five will be with the 1st to 5th Divisions and five for general purposes at home , in India , or corps reserve .
The
A second point is that whereas 15 battalions had been mentioned previously for conversion into machine - gun units the scheme will now apply to 15 regiments ( both battalions ) , so that drafting can be arranged without dislocation of the Card well system of one unit at home and one abroad cooperating in the transfer of personnel . official statement yesterday mentioned only 13 infantry regiments of the line and the two Guards battalions , but the total of 15 is made up by including the Durham Light Infantry , already ordered into conversion , and counting the Guards battalions as a composite linked corps . The new Commander - in - Chief in India is fully in sym pathy with the development . Broadly speaking , 25 regiments , or one - quarter of the Army , will be on a mechanized basis . Each division will have three machine - gun battalions , one in each brigade , a tank battalion and additional batteries , and nine battalions of rifles .
The scheme will take four years to complete . It is likely that the 3rd The King's Own Hussars will be converted first and be fully mechanized this year . The next will probably be the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers . It may be necessary to revert to the old plan of sending cavalry direct to India instead of via Egypt , but relief arrange ments will stand until there is practical experience to work on as there may be changes distribu tion . The two battalions of Guards to be made machine - gun units will supply the 1st and 4th Brigades , which are the 1st in part and the 4th wholly composed of Foot Guards .
The infantry tests on which the plan is based are contained in " Notes on Infantry Experiments in 1935 , " issued in January and referred to in The Times . At that period the outstanding problems of organization were : 1. - Reconstruction of the Division . 2. - Development of the Mobile Division . 3. The future of Cavalry .
4. - Mechanization of , and increase in , Divisional Artillery .
5. Increase in Tank strength . 6. - Employment of armoured fighting vehicles with Divisions in battle .
The new organization , based on the solution of these questions , will ( a ) provide a force up to European standards capable of competing with , or cooperating with , any other aimy ; ( b ) con tain elements for the formation of small mixed forces for any service , such as in mountain country , desert , or bush ; ( c ) permit of purely rifle columns being used against primitive foes or for policing .
