As the umpire had been pounded , Burder went on with Souter to kill the pig and again speared , Heneage , however , chal lenging Burder's spear , the Committee disqualified Burder on the ground that he ought not to have gone on before showing his spear to the umpire . Heat No. 4 , which was reduced to White and
dington , Heneage , and Carbutt ) was taken a long gallop to get up to him . On being started the boar almost immediately got through a fence and turned down a lane . Hotly pursued by Gray , Heneage , however , who had got behind in the run up , saw the boar's line , and cutting across , got into the lane between Gray and the boar . Gray ,

A turn was then made for Colonel then got in , and , after a couple of turns , home , the final heat of the Salmon Cup ( Burder , lost his spear while trying to spear in a castor oil Thesiger , Stack , and Souter ) being kept together The Colonel field , Gray spearing directly after . on the chance of a boar being found on the way , and lodged an objection on the ground that Gray's very soon a good sounder was put up in the open . horse had knocked his spear out of his hand , but The umpire bad to gallop the heat about a mile the umpire disallowed the claim , and subsequently before he could cut out the boar , but having done on the matter being referred to the Committee , this and nursed him across a nullah , the heat was the Colonel withdrew : his objection . Heat No. 1 , let go . Stack and Burder raced neck and neck 1st chances . - Townsend , Carbutt , and White , for the spear , Burder having slightly the best Littleton ( scratched ) also got off near the same of it , but he turned the pig towards Stack , who country as the previous heat , and had a very good secured a very good spear and the cup . gallop after a fast pig . Townsend had the legs of the others , but White getting in on a jink broke his spear while attempting to spear through a cactus fence . Townsend then got in again and speared . After lunch all four heats of the Salmon Cup were sent out , but only one , No. 3 ( Goring - Jones , Burder , and Townsend ) , got off after a nice boar . The umpire unfortunately after giving the word " to ride " got in the way of Goring - Jones and Townsend in a gap , and Burder having got through in front gained an advantage which he maintained over some rough ground , and the boar taking to a lane Burder quickly caught and speared him .
Next morning the final heat of the Guzerat Cup ( Elliot , Goring - Jones , and Gray ) was taken about two miles beyond Vallam . A good boar was found along the river bank , and after he had been nursed clear of the river the heat was let go in open country . Elliot and Gray raced together with Goring - Jones close up , the boar passing close to a well , Gray jumped into the run of the well and the Colonel also had a scramble , but recovering himself the quicker again got on to the boar with Goring - Jones in attendance . After a couple of turns the Colonel took an excellent spear and killed the boar in brilliant style , just in front of Goring - Jones , and thus won the Goozerat Oup . Everyone warmly congratulated Colonel Elliot on his victory , and he richly deserved it , as he has consistently supported the meeting , having run into the final on no less than three other occasions indeed , the wonder is that so brilliant a performer has not won before , and this shows what a game of chance it is .
After lunch the Point - to - Point Races were decided over a very sporting course of about 2 miles near Vallam , which had been marked out by Messrs . White and Burder . The only drawback to the course was that a good many flags had to be used , and as the first part of the course was over a heavily enclosed country , this made it very difficult to spot the flags .
For the Tully Cup for Horses the following started -Townsend on Hurryup , Heneage on Townsend's Ballaarat , Goring - Jones on Good Luck , Stack on Hereward , Waddington on Ritchie's Punch , and Elliot on Burder's Do Weel .
The result was a victory for that good young sportsman , Mr. Stack , on his own horse Here ward , and he thus secured his second victory at the meeting . Heneage on Townsend's ' Ballaarat finished a good second . Most of the competitors
appearance .
Mr. Waddington again ran the Show , and it is needless to say that all his arrangements , both for sport and the comfort of man and beast , were perfect . Mr. W. White was , as usual , indefatigable in arranging beats , & c . , and everyone was glad to see that good sportsman , Mr. Ritchie , from Kaira , this being the first meet he has been able to attend although he has supported it from its commence ment . There were no on - lookers this year , but our only lady " was again very much to the fore , and saw more of the fun than anyone . The weather throughout was delightful , and the sport excellent , 23 pig being killed during the meeting . The entries were very good , showing a total of 46 chances ( 1st and 2nd ) for the Guzerat Cup , and 19 single chances for the Salmon Cup . Of the intending competitors , however , Messrs . Cameron , 6. P. White , Procter , and Gibb had to scratch . Messrs . Jardine and Oakes ( 5th Lancers ) and Montmorency ( 21st Hussars ) , and Major Bailward , R.A. , were prevented at the last minute from coming , while Mr. Graham had not sufficiently recovered from his fall in the late Jackal Clab Race in Bombay to be able to compete . The Thakore Saheb of Wadhwan was prevented from coming as he intended , but Narsisinghji of Baj
pipla , Natwarsinghi of Dhrangadhra , Takhutsingbji Carbutt , had a run en route to Vallam . A jinking
of Katosan , and Narsinghji of Katosan came from the Rajkumar College and competed , and showed by their riding that Mr. Waddington was bringing them up in the right way . Mr. Littleton came to the meet , but was suffering from bad fever con tracted at Dholepore , and greatly to everybody's regret was unable to compete , and had to return to Bombay . Mr. " Percy " too had a touch of the sun and had to retire after the first day .
After dinner on the 3rd , the heats for the 1st and 2nd chances , Guzerat Cup , and for the single chance of the Salmon Oup were drawn as follows :
SALMON CUP .
1st Heat , Souter ( spear ) , Narsinghji of Katosan , Nat warsinghji of Dhrangadhra , Littleton ( scratched ) . 2nd Heat , Gray , Thesiger ( spear ) , Waddington , Carbutt . Brd Heat , Townsend , Goring - Jones , Burder ( spear ) , Percy ( scratched ) . 4th Heat , Narsisinghji of Rajpipla , Crocket , Stack ( spear ) .
On the following day the competition com menced , the meet being at Panchkote , about 8 miles west of Bhandu , Heat No. 1 of the 1st chances was kept back , in the hope that Mr. Littléton might be able to compete on the follow ing day , and heats 2 , 3 , and 4 of the 1st chances of the cup went out . No. 2 heat ( Gray , Burder , Ritchie , and Souter ) was the first to get off , A sounder was started with several good pig in it , and after some confusion as to which was being ridden Gray , Burder , and Ritchie settled down to a nice pig , which the umpire had pointed out , Souter going after another . Gray and Burder made the running over a nice country , Burder scoring over a jink . Heats 3 and 4 then got off almost together . No. 3 ( Goring - Jones , Narsi singji of Eajpipla , Stack , and Waddington ) had a good run after a fast pig . Goring - Jones had the legs of the other , but Waddington on Czarina was handier . Goring - Jones eventually speared . No. 4 ( Gould , Elliot , and Takhatsinghi of Katosan ) got after a very nice pig over nice country , and the Colonel had matters all his own way . No. 5 ( Heneage , Natwarsinghji of Dhrangadhrs , and " Percy " ) then had a great ride , but the boar made over a big nullab and was lost in some heavy
The following day the meet was at Manand on the way to Palasur , and the three remaining pony heats were ordered out , and a good sounder being started at once they all got off . No.2 ( Wadding ton , Gray , Carbutt , and Thesiger ) was put on to a very good boar , Waddington and Gray racing together , and getting close up almost at once . Waddington had a slight advantage , but both he and Gray reaching out to spear at the same time , the spears collided , and Waddington's chance was spoiled . Gray also failed to spear , and the boar got across a field to a lane , down which he turned , everybody except Thesiger overriding him . Thesiger made the most of his chance and speared in the lane .
No. 1 heat ( Souter , Narsisinghji of Katosan , and Natwarsinghji Dhrangadhra ) had a good run over open country , all having a look in . The young Kings rode with great dash , but Souter scored . No. 4 heat ( Narsisinghji of Rajpipla , Crockett , and Stack ) had a short run , Stack securing the spear almost immediately in a lane . This left in Thesiger , Burder , Stack , and Souter for the final of the Salmon Cup .
went wrong at one time or another during the mistakes . Goring - Jones ' Good Luck took to race and lost a good deal of time in retrieving their ground for his sporting owner to have a chance , refusing early in the race , and lost too much and Townsend on Hurryup fell . After the Horse Race the following appeared for the Pony Point - to - Point : -Burder on his waler Native Cat , Waddington on his c b Twi light , Crockett on Carbutt's Arab Rufus , Souter on his c b Novice , and Gray on Townsend's Arab Wait - a - bit .
The course being better known and a bit knock ed about was easier to ride , and the race resulted in a very good win for Burder on Native Cat , who gave all the others about 3 stone , Burder won easily by a length , with Waddington on his c.b. Twilight second . Souter a length abead of Wait - a - bit 3rd . Crockett broke his curb chain , and his pony ran out .
Home was then the order , and at dinner the healths of the winners of the subscribers to the Guzerat Cup , of the Honorary Secretary , and of others , were drunk with three times three , after which , thanks to Colonel Elliot's champagne , and much talent , a most harmonious evening was passed , which , however , did not prevent eight spears turning out in the morning for general about the best of the meeting , offering himself up pigsticking and securing three more boars , the last just as the party was turning homewards .
A most successful meeting was thus brought to a close , and by the evening Bhandu had once more relapsed into its wonted quietude , much , no doubt , to the satisfaction of the piggies remaining in the district :
When age has weakened manhood's powers And every nerve unbraced , Such scenes of joy shall still be ours In memory's tablets traced . And with the friends whom death has spared When youth's wild course is run , We will sing of the dangers we have shared And the tushes we have won .
