REMARKABLE RACE .
There could hardly be a more remark able race than the Maldon Optional Selling Steeplechase at Chelmsford . There were three runners - Foxtrot , Ardeen , and French Leave . After they had all fallen the first named pair were remounted , and after Fox trot had held a six - lengths ' lead seven fur longs from home Ardeen got up to dead heat with him . Foxtrot returned to the un saddling enclosure bleeding at the nostrils , as though he had broken a blood vessel , while his owner - rider . Capt . Lumsden , limped badly and had to be attended by the course surgeon . S. Holt , the rider of French Leave , was also injured .

STEVENSON . - On Nov. 6 , 1926 , at Kirkton House , Carluke , COLONEL JAMES STEVENSON , C.B .. of Braid wood , J P. , late Captain , 12th Royal Lancers , and late Colonel commanding 9th Lanark Rifle Volunteers , aged 88 years . Funeral private .
COLONEL JAMES STEVENSON . Colonel James Stevenson , of Braidwood , Co. Lanark , died last Saturday , his 88th birthday . The son of Nathaniel Stevenson , of Braidwood , he was educated at Rugby School , and entered the Army in 1860 , being gazetted to the 12th ( Prince of Wales ' ) Royal Lancers , in which regiment he attained the rank of captain , and retired in 1868. He was afterwards appointed to command the 9th Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers , with which corps he was associated for nearly 35 years , and which he brought to a high state of efficiency . On the re - organization of the Volunteers on a Territorial basis , he became brigadier - general commanding the Highland Light Infantry Territorial Brigade until his retirement in 1910 .
In 1896 he was made a C.B. and was appointed Aide - de - Camp to Queen Victoria , later to King Edward , and finally to his present Majesty until 1918. He was a magis trate and Commissioner of Supply for Lanark shire during over half a century , and was for many years a member of the County Council and of the Upper Ward District Committee ,. besides being Convener of the Standing Joint Committee for the county . He married , in 1866 , Eliza , daughter of James Hamilton and niece and heiress of John Hamilton of Fair holm , assuming by Royal Warrant the name . of Stevenson - Hamilton . His first wife died in 1875 , and in 1879 he married Frances , daughter of Frederick Leyland of Woolton Hall , Liverpool ; she died in the following year In 1885 he married Florence , daughter of Samuel Mountford Gibbs , of Queen's - gate , London . In 1893 he reassumed , by Royal Warrant , his original name of Stevenson . Colonel Stevenson will be long missed by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances . He was a great sportsman all his life , and was reckoned until well after his 70th year to be one of the best shots in the county . younger days he was well known as a hunting man and steeplechase rider , and in 1865 he won , besides many minor events , the Grand Military Steeplechase over the Rugby course , He was riding his own horse , Glencairn . formerly , too , an amateur boxer and long distance runner of no mean ability .

The Race : Foxtrot led from Ben Cruchan and Maximus , but at half - way Maximus went on second , with Fleecy Wave and Taffytus being a long way behind and Shaun Or hav ing run out . The leading trio took closer order at the turn , and Foxtrot and Maximus jumped the last fence practically level , but Foxtrot again went ahead on the flat , and won by a length ; eight lengths separated second and third . Fleccy Wave was last .

PRINCE AND HIS LANCERS .
The Prince of Wales yesterday visited Hounslow Cavalry Barracks and bade farewell to the 12th Royal Lancers ( the Prince of Wales's ) , who are due to leave England for Egypt next Friday week to relieve the 15 / 19th Hussars .
The Prince inspected the troops and addressed cheery remarks to many of those with war medals . He also wit nessed a watering parade of the horses , inspected the regimental institute and quarters , and was photographed with the sergeants of the regiment and again . with the officers .

The 12th Lancers will sail from South ampton in the City of Marseilles and will be relieved at Hounslow by the 1st Royal Dragoons from Aldershot .
