From Wetherby to Crockey Hill is not a great dis tance , but in regard to atmospheric conditions one might as well have travelled from Cannes to John O'Groats . From warm and genial weather to arctic coldness within a few hours is a change which may well be termed violent , but still it is in accordance with the fitful samples which in England we are accustomed to . The unfavourable weather , together with a charge of one shilling , made for admission to the ground , had an appreciable effect upon the attendance , which was far from being large . On the other hand the fields were splendidly represented , and so far as regarded sport the patronage ought to have been large . Lieut . - Colonel the Hon . B. Legge discharged his duties as a steward in the most courteous and efficient manner , and was ably assisted by Major Scott - Chisholme and Captain Little , both of whom have a claim upon sportsmen for their thorough - going and genuine conduct on the turf . Upon Major Maunsell devolved the duties of judge , starter , clerk of the course and stakeholder , part of which might well have fallen upon the shoulders of Captain Bishop , whose duties were somewhat limited . Mr. J. Forsythe was an excellent clerk of the scales , and altogether the meeting was managed in a thoroughly satisfactory manner . The racing all through was up to a fairly good standard , large representative fields going to the post , and several good finishes being witnessed . De tails of the racing are appended , and it need only be added that the enclosure was occupied by a large and influential company , at the invitation of the officers of the 9th Lancers . Immediately on the fall of the flag the favourite took up the running and quickly assumed a three lengths ' lead of Churston and Rugby . Then Tom Tit travelled into second place , and Nicholas getting badly over the first two fences fell rapidly to the rear . Puyllis continued to show the way well elear of Capt . Johnson's gelding . Churston in the meantime being held in hand . Half way round the second cirenit ajor Chisholme gave his horse his head , but his challenge to Phyllis was well responded to , and the leader never being headed won by half al ngth ; Rugby was a bad third , and , some distance away , Tom Tit passed in fourth . Jim cut out the running at the outset , and then Nugget came The forward hut refused at the first fence past the post . favourite and others also declined at the first attempt , but . the lot quickly recovered , and again began to close up . Then Jim failed to answer a call , and Nugget assuming command came in clear of her field . The favourite had come hard luck and Nugget commanding a very unsatis factory race home ran in a winner by a neck in front of Caraway ; Bonfire being two lengths away third .
