BRIG . - GEN . MALCOLM ORME LITTLE , C.B.
AMONG the recent
Army promotions few
sporting writers have . made mention of the fact that Col. Malcolm Little , the retired officer , has been . advanced to the rank of Brigadier - General . This occurred a few back , when that officer
weeks
was contemplating the acceptance of the joint Mastership of the Pytch ley , in collaboration with his brother - in - law , Capt . Brassey , an arrangement which , through a family bereavement ,
unfortun
ately fell through . Though well known and popular with that hunt , there are probably few civilians who recollect that Gen. Malcolm Little was formerly in full command of the sporting 9th Lancers , and that in that post he succeeded his father , Gen. Sir Archibald Little , K.C.B. He is re lated to the famous Capt . " Josy " Little , of Chandler Grand National fame . When with the Lancers General Little often found himself wearing racing livery between the flags , his red - letter day being when , in 1890 , for his old friend Lord Annaly , he rode Lady Sarah at Sandown and came home a five lengths ' winner of the Grand Military Gold Cup , that being at a period when four - year - olds were allowed to take part in the contest . Lady Sarah was of that age , and the long pull in the

weights - she carried 10st . 7lb . - greatly assisted her in her easy victory . She was well backed in a field of eleven at 6 to 1. The beaten horses included the famous Cloister , another good horse in Bloodstone , each of whom carried 14st . , and a subsequent National Hunt Steeplechase winner in Van der Berg . At the time when General Little was in command of the Lancers the now General D. G. M. Camp bell , of The Soarer Grand National fame , was his adjutant .
