CAPT . HON . C. WILLOUGHBY ON TANGIERS " ( No. 3 9th Lancers ) .
CHRISTY MINSTREL ENTERTAINMENT .
An entertainment was given in the Town Hall on Tuesday by the smart Christy Minstrel troupe of the 9th Lancers in aid of local charities . The soldiers had spared no trouble to make the thing
a success , and it is pleasing to record that the result was commensurate with their efforts . Although the weather on Tuesdey night was of a terribly stormy and severe character , the attendance was very large , and when the per formance commenced , at 8 o'clock , the large hall was crowded . The military turned up in great numbers , including Colonel Stewart - Mackenzie and officers of the regiment . Soldiers , as a rule , are adepts in the art of decoration , and the pretty stage nicely draped with flags , and the well painted scenery . were very creditable to the pro moters of the entertainment , Punctual to time the troupe took their places on the stage , and it was seen that the traditional " Christy " costume had been discarded and the performers were dressed in neat cricketing suits - contrasting very strongly with their blackened faces and hands . The programme was composed of songs of the usual type sung at Christy concerts , comic and se timental . In the comic line Sergeant Proughten and Corporal Kemple were very suc cessful , and the clever singing of a very amusing song , • Danser , Danser , Mademoiselle . " by Corporal Kemple was received with tre mendous applause . Bandsman Marion has a nice clear voice , which was heard to advantage in the pretty song , What care I , now love is mine , ' and Bandsman Rowland sung very pleasingly The light in the West is low . ' The first part of the programme concluded with the . singing of a clever parody , Comin ' thro ' the Dye , ' by the troupe .
The second portion of the entertainment con sisted of a very nice selection by the orchestra , a beautiful piccolo solo , Silver Birds , ' by Band Corporal Everitt , and a clever dance by Privates Sells and Winter . The performance wound up with a lively farce - with a rather incompre hensible plot , the principal parts in which were sustained by Private Wilson and Corporals Kemple and Walker ; the latter introduced a clever topical song in which several local matters were touched upon .
The " cornermen " were - Sergeant Proughten , Private Cottrell , and Corporals Kemple and Walker , and they got through the usual amount of conundrums and funny business - a great part of which was , however , unintelligible to the audience owing to the faulty acoustic properties of the hall .

draped and decorated with flags , lances , etc. There was an excellent orchestra , conducted by Band Sergeant Murdoch . There was a large attendance , the great majority of those present belonging to the regiment , but there was a fair proportion of the public amongst the audience . There would doubtless have been a much larger attendance of the latter if the entertainment had commenced at an earlier hour . This is the third entertainment that the Lancers " Christys " have given in Dundalk , but the clever and versatile members of the troupe fairly excelled themselves on Wednesday night . The performance was far in advance of those given previously , and indeed of any entertainment of the same class ever given in Dundalk either by professional or amateur troupes

Sells and Darvill executed a very dance .
The concluding portion of the a musical extravaganza , entitled managed , " in which the principals w tained by Privates Wilson , Cottrell and Vaugi and Corporal Walker and Sergeant Proughton . piece was a highly amusing one , and several laugn able episodes were introduced , the burlesque of the " strong men " performers by Privates Darvill and Winter being most diverting . Some catchy airs and dances were introduced , including the latest pantomime production , " Ta - ra - boom - de - ay . "
The performance wound up at a rather advanced hour by the playing of the National Authem .
