A VERY enjoyable minstrel entertainment was given last evening by the 9th ( Queen's Royal ) Lancers in the Recreation Rooms of the Victoria Barracks in aid of the Soldiers ' Home . There was a large attendance , and the programme , which was most attractive , was excellently rendered . The entertainment was under the direction of Band Sergeant A. Murdock , who arranged the music , and , in addition to the accompaniments to the various songs , contributed , with the assistance of a capable orchestra , the following selections , all of which were well received " Ah ! che la morte ! " ( " Il Trovatore " ) ( Verdi ) ; " The Coster's Serenade " ( Albert Chevalier ) ; " The Four - ' oss Sharry bang " ( Corney Grain ) ; and " Ta - ra - ra boom - de - ay " ( R. Morton ) . The programme of the minstrel concert comprised the following : Opening chorus , " The Balloting Brigades " ( E. Forman ) , troupe ; song ( comic ) , " Sally Snow " ( E. Kelbrooke ) , Private Cottrell ; ballad , " Down by the Maybush " ( Celian Kottaun ) , Sergeant Hides ; song ( comic ) , " In our backyard , last night " ( E. Beauchamp ) , Sergeant Proughten ; song ( patriotic ) , " Sons of England " ( Celian Kot taun ) , Corporal Williams ; song ( comio ) , " Ri - fum . ti - fum , chi - fum , choo " ( Celian Kottaun ) , Private Vaughan ; ballad , " The Old Rustic Bridge " ( J. P. Skelly ) , Bandsman Marion ; song ( comic ) , " Danser , Danser , Mademoiselle " ( Alfred Lee ) , Corporal Walker ; ballad , " The Light in the West is Low " ( Warwick Williams ) , Bandsman Rowland ; song ( comic ) , " If ever I catch that Coon ( J. Hart ) , Private Cottrell ; finale , " The Handy - Dandy Band " ( E. Forman ) , troupe ; song and dance , " Patty wants a nice young man " ( H. Harriden ) , Privates Winter , Sells , and Darvill ; grotesque act ( introducing the highly - trained steed Bendigo ) , Privates Cottrell and Vaughan ; concert valse ( piccolo solo ) , " Silver Birds " ( Ch . Le Thiere ) , Sergeant Everett . The entertainment concluded with the musical extravaganza , " The Manager Outmanaged , " in which the dramatis personæ were : -Sir Augustus Druriolanus ( manager , T. R. Darktown ) , Private C. Wilson ; Julias Sneezer , Signor Semi - breeves , Corporal P. S. Walker ; Private S. Cottrell ; Wilson Barrytone , Pri vate C. Vaughan ; Simon Cellarflap , Private T. Darvill ; Castor and Pollux ( the very strongest men on earth ) , Privates H. Winter and E. Sells ; Malle . Moûton Patti ( operatic vocalist ) , Private E. Marion ; and Miss Tottie Dollins , Sergeant C. Proughton ; scene . " Manager's Office , Theatre Royal , Darktown . " The performance was most creditable , and the eingers and sketch artistes were heartily applauded . A word of praise is due to Sergeant various C. Proughten and Private C. Vaughan ( bones ) , Private C. Wilson ( interlocutor ) , Corporal P. S. Walker and Private S. Cottrell ( tambourines ) for the manner in which they acquitted themselves . It may be added that the performance will be re peated this evening in the Ulster Hall , and , con sidering the merit of the object , the attendance should be very large . ENTERTAINMENT IN THE CAVALRY BARRACKS . On Wednesday night the Christy Minstrel troupe of the 9th Lancers gave a performance in the Kiding School , Dundalk barracks . The Riding School is a spacious building , providing accommodation for a very large number of people . Ample seating accommodation was provided , and everything was done by those in charge of the arrangements to make the place look as comfortable as was possible in a building of the sort . A word of credit is due to the soldiers who designed and erected the very con venient and attractive stage , which was nicely draped and decorated with flags , lances , etc. There was an excellent orchestra , couducted by Band Sergeant Murdoch . There was a large attendance , the great majority of those present belonging to the regiment , but there was a fair proportion of the public amongst the audience . There would doubtless bave been a much larger attendance of the latter if the entertainment had commenced at an earlier hour . This is the third entertainment that the Lancers " Christys " have given in Dundalk , but the clever and versatile members of the troupe fairly excelled themselves on Wednesday night . The performance was far in advance of those given previously , and indeed of any entertainment of the same class ever given in Dundalk either by professional or amateur troupes EUR " f 9TH ( QUEEN'S ROYAL ) LANCERS . The first part of the programme was of the Christy Minstrel character . There were some very good songs , notably those by Sergeant Proughton , Privates Cottrell and Vaughan , and Bandsman Marion . The corner.men ' kept up a running fire of conundrunis and jokes . The latter were not of the usual stereotyped character prevalent at Christy concerts , but displayed traces of considerable smartness and originality . The first portion of the entertainment concluded with a spirited chorus by the troupe . formance In the second part of the programme Privates Cottrell and Vaughan indulged in some very laughable eccentricities , and the former's per with his highly trained ( ! ) steed , Bendigo , " was very mirth provoking . Private C Wilson caused considerable amusement by his delivery of a stump speech , and Privates Winter , Sells and Darvill executed a very smart and graceful dance . The concluding portion of the entertainment was a musical extravaganza , entitled " The manager out managed , " in which the principal parts were su3 . tained by Privates Wilson , Cottrell and Vaughan , and Corporal Walker and Sergeant Prough on . The piece was a highly amusing one , and several laugh able episodes were introduced , the burlesque of the " strong men performers by Privates Darvill and Winter being most diverting . Some catchy airs and dances were introduced , including the latest pantomime production , " Ta - ra - boom - de - ay . " 17 The performance wound up at a rather advanced hour by the playing of the National Authem . |
