9TH LANCERS ' REGIMENTAL PACES . These races came off on Tuesday over e Dun dalk Racecourse at North Marsh , and were accom panied by every element of success - brilliant weather , a large and fashionable attendance , fairly good fields of horses , and some exciting finishes , and happily not marred by the slightest accident . True , Baltimore came a cropper , as he did last year , and later on over another course ; but Mr Campbell either possesses ready skill , or is attended by good luck ; so that his spill at the regulation fence ( a villainous innovation ) had no bad result - except for backers ; but for which they were recouped later in the day .
In the Messrs Verdon's spacious marquee , Colonel Stewart - Mackenzie and his officers enter tained a numerous company of guests during the day ; but their splendid hospitality was not con fined to their invited guests , for by the time sport concluded almost every decent - looking person in the enclosure had been made welcome to a luncheon which for elegance and unstinted abundance re flected credit on the regiment - more especially those who had special charge of the catering . The tables , in addition to the good things displayed , were nicely decorated with flowers , and on the table in the centre of the marquee there was an in teresting display of the sporting trophies of the regiment , the whole surrounded by a parterre of flowers and evergreens .
A pleasing feature of the reunion was the delightful programme of music discoursed in the enclosure by the splendid band of the regiment . We are glad to find that the genial bandmaster ( Mr Winter ) has no classic fads , that all his music is right popular and up to date . Hear it and die , oh you German music cranks - the stirring performance of " Ta - ra - ra Boom - de - ay " excited such a furore of applause that the company would not be satisfied until it was repeated . The music of this song , however much it may be de . cried by purists , seems specially suited for a military band , as brass instruments and drum are largely requisitioned .
As regards the sport provided , we must at the outset mention that military punctuality was ob served , every rider being ready before the starting time arrived .
Mr Waters must have felt pleased at the readiness to weigh - in , and everything went off without a hitch . In the first event , " The Subalterns '
Cup , " , " although backers came to grief after laying
the odds on Baltimore as a cert .; yet the victory of Wanda was received with much applause , especially by the rank and file of the regiment , many of the men securing a nice stake by Mr Von Schroder's success , who by his win on Tuesday becomes the owner of the Cup . The race for the " Adelaide Challenge Cup " was the best - contested of the day , as there appeared to be nothing to choose between the favourite , Una , and Major Gough's mount , Ina , until the run home on the flat , when Una came away , and at the close won in somewhat easy style . In the race for the Dowdallshill ( why Dowdallshill ? ) Plate that rare old horse , Admiral , had the foot of Corpe New the whole way . Nothing but the spirited manner in which Corpe New was backed down to 2 to 1 prevented Admiral from being a money - on chance . As it was , backers made a nice haul at even money . Burlesque , from whom great things was expected , would not or could not gallop , and Betty was nowhere at any time in the race . In the " Maiden Horses Challenge Cup , " Blackflag was made a warm favourite ; but , like last year , the hopes of her backers were soon doomed to dis appointment , and Greenoak , who was heavily backed just at the start , won with great ease , at the nice odds of 4 to 1. The Farmers ' Race resulted in a victory for Surprise , which was certainly a great " surprise " to the backers , of Whitewings , whose running seemed suspicious to some of the spectators . Reformer , who carried a welter weight of 12st 10lb , probably could not win with such weight on hard ground . In any case , he was to be objected to had he first passed the post . Baltimore , notwithstand ing his mishap in the first race , was made a hot favourite for the Regimental Cup ; but Una from her fine display in the second event , did not lack backers at 2 to 1. However , Baltimore ( who has undergone a training with Michael Dennehy ) made no mistake this time , and came home in fine striding style , an easy winner .
This event concluded the day's racing , and sport was over at such a convenient hour that those who
wished it were enabled to leave by the limited mail and arrive in Dublin at a little after 7 o'clock . Appended are details :

Rear Guard , quite fractious in the paddock , got more unruly outside and delayed the start , and when the start was effected bolted at the first fence . Baltimore soon forged to the front , at tended by Absentee and St. Fergus , Wanda lying off a dozen lengths . Baltimore led past the stand he first time , and striding along in fine style as seemed to betoken an easy win . He kept the lead well in front to the regulation fence , where he came down ; but in a short time Mr Campbell re mounted and came on in pursuit of Absentee and Wanda . The former looked like winning , but only for a few strides , as he was soon headed by Wanda . who cantered in an easy winner , Baltimore , a long way behind , was third . Una was quickest away , attended by Nancy and Woodcock , with Ina and Minster close up , this order being observed to the water jump opposite the stand on first round . Here Nancy , overjumping herself , almost came down on her head , throwing Captain Bishop on to her neck . For an instant looked as if a serious mishap would take place . But Captain Bishop never lost hold and slid back into the saddle , his readiness in averting the apparently pending disaster and fortunate escape calling forth great cheering from the interested spectators . Having slipped his reins , Captain Bishop did not persevere with Nancy , and pulled up . The race by this time had resolved itself into a match between Ina and Una , the former retaining the lead to the last fence on the run home , where Una was brought to the front and won by three lengths from Ina , Minster third , and Woodcock fourth ..

From the start Betty and Burlesque were out paced , and may be said to have never been in the Corpe New ; but the former all through had the race . It was simply a match between Admiral and best of it , and cantered in a winner by twenty lengths without a hair being turned . Burlesque were apparently lost on the course - at Betty and least they were not seen to pass the post .
Betting - Evens Admiral , 2 to 1 agst Corpe New , 6 to 1 agst Burlesque , 10 to 1 agst Betty .

Whitewings seemed to have this hand from the start , maintaining a lead of half - a dozen lengths from Surprise , Reformer apparently not able to act on the hard ground , and with such a steadier as 12st 10lb . As the horses disappeared momentarily from view behind the hill opposite the stand , Whitewings was bang in front , but when the horses re - appeared Whitewings was hopelessly in Surprise had taken the lead , which he maintained to the end , winning by a dozen lengths . In reply to a steward as to the cause of White wings falling back , the rider said the mare " stuck her toes in the ground . "

mistake in the jumping this time won by two Baltimore led the entire way , and making no lengths . Violet , which lay behind all through , after passing the last fence came on with a tremen dous rush as if meaning real business . But although she got second place the effort was regarded as a mere " flash in the pan . "
This concluded the day's racing .

9TH LANCERS ' CHRISTY CONCERT .
A very successful and enjoyable entertainment was given by the 9th Lancers ' Christy Minstrel The spacious Troupe on Monday evening last . riding school of the barracks did duty as a concert hall , and what with the pretty little stage and the decorations of flags , lances , etc. , the usually dingy interior of the building presented a comfortable and There was a very large even gay appearance . audience , amongst whom were the Colonel and officers of the regiment , accompanied by a number of guests ; whilst amongst the remainder of the audience there were a large number of the general public .
The troupe is composed entirely of non - commis sioned officers and men of the regiment , and amongst them are several very clever performers and some good voices .
The first part of the programme consisted of a number of lively comic songs , catchy choruses , and some good funny business by the " cornermen . " In the comic line , Sergeant Proughton , Corporal Vaughan , and Private Cottrell were very successful , especially the last named , who displayed comie powers of no mean order in his clever acting and singing of a descriptive song and monologue , The Shopwalker " ( Le Brun ) . The different songs and excellent choruses were accompanied by orchestra under the conductorship of Band Sergeant Murdock .

In the second part of the programme Private Cottrell was again prominent in a laughable mock glove fight with Private Knight . Private Cottrell also gave a good rendering of the coster song , " Wot Privates Darvell , Sells , and Winter executed a smart dance , and the performance wound up with a farce , entitled , " The vendetta or the Corsican twins , " the characters in which were essayed by Private Knight , Private Cottrell , Corporals Wilson and Walker , and Bandsman Marion .
n
The Lancers ' Christys have given a good many entertainments since the regiment has been stationed here , and the committe and hon . sec . ( Sergeant Hides ) are to be congratulated for the capital manner in which they have been organised , and the success with which they have met .
