PSSPPAHOUBO Q.M. Forsyn , capt . 27 Sept.20 e , hon . cape co pt.24a 9TH LANCERS ' REGIMENTAL RACES , STEWARDS - Lieut - Colonel Stewart MacKenzie , Captain Little , Captain Jammer , Mr G. P. Ellison . JUDGE - Major Morland . HON SECRETARY - Captain Jenner . CLERK OF SCALES , & C - Mr Brindley . It is not often even in this extremely moist country that we have three successive days of rainy downpour ; but such has been the case this week . The 9th Lancers encountered the full brunt of the opening day - Wednesday - on the occasion of their Poin to Point Races ; and the continued rain of Thursday and Friday led many persons to anticipate that the Regimental Races fixed for to - day at Dowdallshill would have to be postponed - as even if to - day turned out fine , the course would be unsafe for running and un comfortable to visitors . as well as having a bad effect on the attendance . However , the military abhor postponements , and , except under insurmountable difficulties . adhere to previous arrangements . This morning opened fine , with bright sunshine - if anything , suspiciously too bright to last ; and it was there fore little surprise to find that at 11 o'clock the atmosphere became clouded and rain commenced to fall . However , the rain eleared off in a short time , and once more the sky brightened . At one o'clock the weather changed again , and rain fell incessantly for nearly three hours . The weather , however , cleared at three o'clock , and the last three races were got through in decent weather . There were seven events on the card . The Dundalk Committee , following the precedent of the Mullacurry Stewards gave a Plate of 25 sovereigns - Hunters ' Steeplechase . At the eleventh hour the Lancers gave a Farmers ' Plate of £ 20 . of which £ 5 went to second horse ; and there also cropped up an interesting Challenge Match , arising out of the Harriers Point - to - Point Race on Wednesday , won by Mr St Patrick Macardle . The latter backed his mare , Mermaid ( owner up ) , against Mr H M Williamson's Ayala ( Mr T J Byrne up ) , at even weights , for £ 25 a side . A afterwards THE " F.O.S. PORTRAIT GALLERY . No. 206. SIR WILLIAM JENNER , F.O.S. " Gaily we chartered the smartest cab , drawn by the fiery , untamedest cab - horse , driven by the drunkenest Jehu in Fleet Street , and , seated at our ease in this sumptuous vehicle , were whirled rapidly towards the abode of the celerated physician , Sir William Jenner . Upon inquiring for Sir William , we were ! told that he was at that moment engaged upon a most important case - a youthful scion of a noble house had partaken too plenti fully of Hokey ' ; and his constitution being undermined by a long indulgence , in the delightful but pernicious toffee - ball , serious results were anticipated . We resolved to wait for our prey , however ; and , after admiring ourselves in the mirror for four or five hours , our patience was rewarded by the entrance of Sir William . Pray tell us , ' we began , when Sir William inter rupted the flow of our eloquence by requesting to look at our tongue . As I thought , ' he remarked , when he had inspected that portion of our anatomy , too many Press luncheons lately . Now , my dear sir , do in future let milk punch and old Madeira alone , and confine yourself to light Rhine wines Let me feel your pulse . Ah ! too fast , too fast ! and you are decided y feverish . Here , take this , ' and , opening a cabinet , Sir Willia poured out a most norrible looking mixture . In vain we pr tested that we were in the best of health ; that we did not come to consult , but to interview him . Seizing us by the nose , Sir William forced the nauseous drug down our throat and coolly demanded a five guinea fee . With the taste of the horrible mixture still in our moutli , and Sir William's mocking laughter ringing in our ears , we fled back to The Sloperies , and found that it was chiefly because he fs à Court ( ed ) physician that our hero was created F.O.S. , and the Sloper Award of Merit ' pre sented to him March 13th , 1886 . " - Debrett Improved . ECHOES FROM THE EAST ESSEX . A Happy New Year to you , Foxhunters all ! Though you ride in the van , or you plod in the rear , Though you've horses in plenty , or no horse at all So long as you're Sportsmen- " A Happy New Year . " Here's a health to our Master , who came to the front When the hunting horizon was not very clear Sir , there is not a man in the East Essex Hunt But who wishes you many " A Happy New Year . " Now a glass to our huntsman , of Atherstone fame , With a voice like a bell - how they fly to his cheer ! Big fences or small are to him all the same Ned Farmer , good luck , and " A Happy New Year . " And next , to the friend who's no rider to hounds , But whose woods hold " the genuine thing , " never fear , Whose covert with pheasants and foxes abounds To such a true sportsman , " A Happy New Year ! " To the sport - loving farmer , whose acres we cross ( Leaving tracks that in truth look uncommonly queer ) , Who himself , perhaps , never gets on to a horse , But who welcomes the hounds - here's " A Happy New Year ! Fair East Essex ladies ! we venture to say When the hounds run their hardest you'll always be " there , " And your followers beg you'll permit them , to - day , To wish you good sport - and A Happy New Year ! " One more toast ere we part - aye , a bumper we'll drain ! To a name that East Essex will ever hold dear To a friend we all long to see with us again For Beale Colvin , three cheers ! and " A Happy New Year ! " JACK SPRAGGON . |
