It is not often even in this extremely moist . country that we have three successive days of rainy downpour ; but such has been the case this The 9th Lancers encountered the full brunt of the opening day Wednesday - on the occasion of their Point to Point Races ; and the continued rain of Thursday and Friday led many persons to anticipate that the Regimental Races fixed for to - day at Dowdallshill would have to be postponed - as even if to - day turned out fine , the course would be unsafe for running and un comfortable to visitors , as well as having a bad effect on the attendance . to fall . However , the military abhor postponements , and , except under insurmountable difficulties . adhere to previous arrangements . This morning opened fine , with bright sunshine - if anything , suspiciously too bright to last ; and it was there fore little surprise to find that at 11 o'clock the atmosphere became clouded and rain commenced However , the rain cleared off in a short time , and once more the sky brightened . At one o'clock the weather changed again , and rain fell incessantly for nearly three hours . NORTH OF IRELAND , POLO CLUB . There was a numerous and fashionable company on Saturday afternoon at Newforge , the splendid ground of the North of Ireland Club , to witness the opening matches for the season , and the weather being fine . the proceedings proved most enjoyable . Notwith standing the recent rain the ground was in beautiful condition for a fast game - in fact , several of the players who are acquainted with the principal polo grounds across the water expressed the opinion that the ground would in every way compare favourably with any upon which they have played . Considering the comparatively short space of time the club has had possession of the ground , the turf is in a good condition , and as we have already stated there is a handsome little club house , which affords ample dressing - room accom modation , and the roof of which is fitted up as a stand , from which à splendid view can be had of the play . In other ways the ground bas been much improved , and its Con dition reflects the greatest play with much interest . Notwithstanding the recent heavy rains , the ground was in excellent condition , and a number of well - contested and exciting matches took place . During the first quarter the 9th Lancers played the Rifle Brigade , the former being represented by Major Lamont , back ; Captain Colvin , half - back ; and Captains Little and Jenner , forwards ; while the Brigade put into the field Captain Craik , back ; Captain Sherston , half - back ; and Mr. Lawrence and Mr. Ramsay , forwards . The cavalry had all credit upon the best of the contest , and won by three goals to the committee and the energetic and nil . Both teams played much better together than courteous secretary of the club , Mr. George F on Saturday . Daring the first five minutes Richardson . This was fol Brigade . The visitors lowed by a match between 9th Lancers , Belfast , were - Major Lamont back ; Captain Colvin , half Captain Little and and 9th Lancers , Dundalk , and after a spirited Captain Jenner , forwards ; while the Brigade put and dashing game the visitors were victorious by into the field Captain Crake , back T. The cavalry men had all the best of a fast Captains MacFarlane and Jenner , forwards . and exciting match and won easily by three goals Belfast - Captain Duff , back ; Captain Little ; to nil . Two of the goals were knocked up by half - back ; Captain Willoughby and Lord Charles Captain Colvin , and the third by Captain Little . Bentinck , forwards . The goals for the visitors Where such all - round good play was shown it were knocked up by Captains MacFarlane and would be invidious to particularise , and we shall Jenner , and Captain Duff made the record on be content ourselves with the remark half of Belfast . This was followed by match and though the latter defeated their oppo between the team of the Lancers from Dundalk nents , still the brigade retired from the field with and a team representing the detachment of that more credit than on the former occasion , Captain regiment stationed in Belfast . The visitors played Sherston having succeeded in registering a goal the same team as before , and the others were shortly after the play had commenced . The goals Captain Duff , back ; Captain M'Farlane , half - back ; ( 3 ) for the Lancers were obtained by Major Captain Willoughby and Lord Charles Bentinck , Lamont , Captain Little , and Captain Jenner . A forwards . Dundalk had the best of the game , and won by two goals , scored by Captains Colvin and Little , the Belfast men not being able to score at all . Several other matches were played , but they were of a purely scratch character , and it is notneces sary to refer to them further than to say they were much enjoyed . In conclusion , we wish the North of Ireland Club every success during the season that is before them , and express the hope that the public support accorded to them will be as libera number of scratch matches layed . were afterwards . as their energy and enterprise entitle them ta receive . To - day at half - past three o'clock , at Newforge , two matches will be played - namely , 9th Lancers ( Dundalk ) v . the North of Ireland , and 9th Lancers ( Dundalk ) v . Rifle Brigade . If the weather is good some interesting play should be witnessed , and we have no doubt there will be a large attendance . POLO . NORTH OF IRELAND POLO CLUB . BEAUTIFUL weather favoured the polo display , under the auspices of this club , at New Forge yesterday , and , as on Saturday , a large and fashionable attendance of spectators watched the 28 THE " F.O.S. PORTRAIT GALLERY . No. 206. SIR WILLIAM JENNER , F.O.S. " Gaily we chartered the smartest , cab , drawn by the fiery , untamedest cab - horse , driven by the drunkenest Jehu in Fleet Street , and , seated at our ease in this sumptuous vehicle , were whirled rapidly towards the abode of the celerated physician , Sir William Jenner . Upon inquiring for She William , we were told that he was at that moment engaged upon a most important case - a youthfui scion of a noble house had partaken too plenti fully of Hokey ' ; and his constitution being undermined by a long indulgence , in the delightful but pernicious toffee - ball , serious results were anticipated . We resolved to wait for our prey , however ; and , after admiring ourselves in the mirror for four or five hours , our patience was rewarded by the entrance of Sir William . Pray tell us , ' we began , when Sir William inter rupted the flow of our eloquence by requesting to look at our tongue . As I thought , ' he remarked , when he had inspected that portion of our anatomy , too many Press luncheons lately . Now , my dear sir , do in future let milk punch and old Madeira alone , and confine yourself to light Rhine wine Let me feel your pulse . Ah ! too fast , too fast ! and you are decided y feverish . Here , take this , ' and , opening a cabinet , Sir Willia n poured out a most horrible looking mixture . In vain we pr tested that we were in the best of health ; that we did not come to consult , but to interview him . Seizing us by the nose , Sir William forced the nauseous drug down our throat and coolly demanded a five guinea fee . With the taste of the horrible mixture still in our mouth , and Sir William's mocking laughter ringing in our ears , we fled back to The Sloperies , and found that it was chiefly because he is a Court ( ed ) nhysician that our hero was created F.O.S. , and the Sloper Award of Merit pre sented to him March 13th , 1886 .
