Transcription THE VICTORIA SWIMMING CLUB .
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING .
The annual general meeting of the members of the Victoria Swimming Club was held at the Greyhound Hotel , Enfield Lock , on Tuesday evening , when there was a large attendance . Mr J. D. Millor was unanimously voted to the chair .
THE MINUTES .
Mr W. A. Alps , secretary to the elub , read the minutes of the last general meeting , which were confirmed .
THE COMMITTEE'S REPORT . During the year there have been enrolled 129 adult and 76 junior members , making a total of 205 , together with 51 donors ; the names on the books now number 256. The committee ( said the report ) take this opportunity of thanking all those gentlemen who have assisted the club so liberally in providing the money necessary to defray the cost of our building . It has enabled them to state that the club is not in debt , but I can show a substantial balance to the credit of its members . In fairness to the swimming masters , it must be said their labours have been unceasing and successful ; there is much satis factory evidence of progress . We would urge all our young members to cultivate that perse verance and regularity which is the only sure road to success in the art of scientific swimming . Your committee have not been able to provide bathing accommodation for ladies , but they p yet to see such accommodation provide . The Abbey Field ( Waltham Abbey ) has been spoken of as a most suitable place to construct a swim ming bath , such as would accommodate ladies and the boys of this district ; we trust that those people interested in this question will do all in their power to further the movement . " The donations amounted to £ 49 13s 6d , and this amount has been expended in the erection of a bathing house with the exception of 88 2d . The general club account , however , showed that the total income was £ 34 Os 3d , and that there is a balance in hand of £ 8 78 ld .
Mr Moffroy moved the adoption of the report , and Mr Burley , in seconding , said he thought that the club was much indebted to the officers for bringing the affairs to such a successful issue .
THE SECRETARY .
The Chairman said it was with regret that the committee received the resignation of Mr W. A. Alps , who had acted as secretary during the past year . The members he hoped would seriously consider this matter before deciding what steps to take .
After some discussion , in the course of which Mr Alps was sorely pressed to allow himself to be re - elected ,
Mr Poppey , the captain of the club , proposed Mr A. T. Overall as secretary . ( Applause . ) Mr Burley seconded .
Mr Alps said the reason why he resigned the post of secretary was that he could not really devote the time to the work that he should like , and which he felt it required . He had so many other irons in the fire ; and if he continued on , most probably he would have to resign in the middle of the swimming season , which would make it very awkward for the club . In Mr A. T. Overall they would find an able worker , and he did not know anyone who could do the work better .
Mr Thompson said they were all very sorry in losing the services of Mr Alps , but he thought that with an assistant Mr Alps might reconsider the matter .
Several members expressed themselves to the effect that two secretaries could not work very well together .
On the chairman putting the motion to the meeting it was agreed to .
THE CLUB'S TREASURER .
A letter was read from G. Corble , Esq . , regretting that owing to an engagement in London he could not be at the annual meeting . The meeting , however , unanimously re - elected Mr Corble treasurer .
THE PRESIDENTS - PAST AND PRESENT .
The secretary read the following communica tions :
" Enfield Lock , 13th February , 1888. - To the secretary Victoria Swimming Club . - Dear Sir , -I should be obliged if you will inform your committee that it is my intention to resign the presidency of your club , as I feel that owing to the numerous engage ments on Saturday afternoons I have during the summer months , I cannot be present at your enter tainments as often as a person occupying the position of president should be . Although resigning my official position in the club , I shall still continue to take the greatest interest in it , and wish it every success in the ensuing season . - Yours faithfully , W. HUNTER . "
" 94 , Piccadilly , W. , March 11th . -Dear Mr Corble , Your letter was forwarded to me at Chatham ( where I shall be till the end of the month ) , or I should have answered it before . I beg to thank you and the committee for the honour they have done me in inviting me to become the president of the club , a privilege which I feel most proud to accept . I only regret that Colonel Hunter is obliged to retire from the head of affairs , as the club will be a great loser thereby , and I feel I can never fill the vacancy half as efficiently as he has done . However , I can assure you of my hearty support in all your movements for the good of the club , and I hope that as it is now started so successfully it may continue to improve ou its good foundation . It is most kind of the committee to present me with the photograph , which I shall greatly value , and be proud to think that I can enrol myself among their numbers as one of the originators of the club . I hope you will convey my very best thanks to them , and hope that I shall be able to come down this summer to meet them . -I remain , sincerely yours , FORRESTER COLVIN . "
The members regrette Colonel Hunter's resignation , and , on the motion of Mr Alps , seconded by Mr F. Overall , Forrester Volvin , Esq . , was appointed president of the club . ( Applause . )
THE COMMITTEE .
The committee elected was composed as fol lows : Messrs . J. D. Miller , L. Speller , Webb , Thompson , H. Overall , Chittenden , Martin , Burley , Bone , and Dyer .
RE - ELECTION OF AUDITOR .
On the motion of Mr Burley , seconded by Mr Pursey , Mr H. Gibbons , of Waltham Abbey , was re - elected auditor of the club's accounts .
A SWIMMING BATH FOR WALTHAM ABBEY .
Mr H. Overall said that the advisability of getting a swimming bath at Waltham Abbey , in which boys might be taught to swim , and in which ladies could bathe , had been spoken of . Everybody agrood that such baths were much required , and he begged to move " That in the opinion of this meeting it is desirable that a graduated bathing place be formed at Waltham Abbey , and pledges itself to support the same by teaching swimming . "
Mr Poppy secouded the resolution . It was very desirable that some place or other be provided at Waltham Abboy , and every member of the club he had no doubt would take an interest in teaching the young boys the art of swimming . If there was proper bathing place he had no doubt it would be largely rsed by the ladies ou days sot apart specially for
a
them .
Mr Alps had no doubt but the matter would be brought before some of the local bodies in the course of the season .
The Chairman said the club would be happy to give all the help it could by teaching swimming .
The resolution was carried unanimously .
FURTHER ENCOURAGEMENT .
Mr F. F. Colvin , in a letter which was read to the meeting , and which had been addressed to Mr G. Corble , stated that he was glad to learn from the Weekly Telegraph the great success which attended the meetings of the club and their entertainment . " This , " continued Mr Colvin , " I put down entirely to the trouble and energy you have displayed in the advancement of the club . Next year I shall be most happy to sond you £ 5 as a contribution towards a swimming prize- ( applause . ) - the conditions of which i leave to your judgment , so that you can do as you think will be most beneficial for the club . Hoping to hear of even more success next summer , " etc. , etc. , ( sigued ) FORRESTER COLVIN . ( Loud applause . )
AFFILIATION OF THE SOCIETY .
It was resolved to affiliate the Victoria Swimming Club to the Amateur Swimming Association .
Votes of thanks having been accorded to their late superintendent ( Colonel Hunter ) , Mr Corble , Mr Gibbons , Mr Colvin , the committee , and to the other officers , the meeting terminated .
THE ESSEX HUNT BALL .
ALARMING FIRE .
On Tuesday night the ball of the Essex Hunt took place at the Assembly - roons ou Latton Common . There was a brilliant gathering , and the rooms never looked brighter . All was
was
ready for the assembling guests , when the cry of " Fire ! Fire ! " was heard , and in a moment there was great commotion . The con tractor was the well - known Mr. Schmidt ( of Enfield ) , who had erected a large saloon leading from the dancing - room . It was mostly of and canvas , luxuriously furnished . Just as the decorations were finished a Chinese lamp was upset , and in a very short time the whole of the drapery was in flames , and the country was lit up for miles . At Harlow and other places it was thought the rooms were on fire , and many were the feet that sped to the festive scene . However , there was little wind , and Mr. Schmidt with all hands set to work to prevent the fire spreading , and tore down the drapery , & c . Plenty of water was available , and there was a short , sharp , but decisive struggle with the burning elements . At last the fire was out , but the temporary structure was demolished , and the damage will reach £ 350 . Some choice plants from Paul's Nurseries were destroyed - one being an orange tree valued at £ 15 . Some 400 yards of gauze material were consumed , and a number of sofas , lounges , and other furniture , & c . Most of the loss is covered by insurance . The foreman in charge says this is the first time in 25 years that he has known of such a mishap .
Evelyn
Dancing began just before ten , and was kept up till late next morning . The Hungarian Band discoursed sweet music ; and supper was served in the dining hall at midnight .
