The party from Wentworth Castle comprised , besides Prince Albert Victor , his host , Mr. Vernon Wentworth , and Lady Harriet Wentworth and their family , Ladies Sophia and Hilda Rouse , Lord Skelmersdale , and Ladies Maud and Bertha Wilbraham . Some surprise was expressed at the absence of Lord and Lady Fitzwilliam , who were in London owing to an " important engage ment . " During the night an incident occurred which caused Prince Albert Victor some little embarrassment , and finally convulsed him with laughter . Several young men of local fame were smoking their cigarettes , and refreshing themselves at the gentlemen's buffet , when it was suggested that they should send a note into the ballroom to ask another local celebrity to join them . The note was scribbled on a rough bit of paper , and was duly despatched by one of the waiters , who , mistaking the description given him , handed it in error to Prince Albert Victor . The note was not addressed , and the Prince opened it and read , " Come out here and have a drink , old chap , if you've quite done spooning that fat girl in the primrose dress . " For a moment the Prince was nonplussed , but he quickly saw that a mistake had been made , and revealed his identity to the horror stricken waiter , who had to take the missive back to its still more horror - struck author for more definite in structions .
