Transcription RACES AT UMBALLA ,
( From a Correspondent . ) UMBALLA , Jan. 14 .
These Races took place on Saturday , January 12th ; and , under the able management of Major the Hon'ble H. Legge , as Honorary Secretary , a well - filled card was provided for the afternoon With a hard - riding Regiment like the 9th Lancers , we , of course , enjoyed one or two good things in the cross - country line ; and , when Steeplechasing is at the low ebb it is at present in India , it is a treat to see a field of horses get round a steeplechase course with only one mishap .
In the first race , the Pony Chase , a most ex citing finish ensued between Marie and Grisette , the former just getting home by a neck . The Regimental Cup - the next event on the card presented by Lieutenant - Colonel Bushman , C.B. , brought out a field of six ; favouritism being divided between Beeswing and Miss G. , the former winning a good race by 1 length . The Boojum Stakes , an open race , brought out a field of six excellent ponies from the station ; the K. O. B's furnishing the winner in Jessie . An exciting match between Wee , and the hero of many fights , Pipe - stems , ended in a victory for the former by a neck . In the Adelaide Stakes , we were glad to see that excellent sportsman , Major Gough , consoled for losing the Steeple chase , as Sugar Plum led from start to finish , and won , in the commonest of canters , by four lengths . A race between four ponies of the Regiment brought the proceedings to a close , and we have to thank the 9th Lancers for an excellent afternoon's sport.com
