When it became known that R. B. Colvin , Esq . , of Monkham's Hall , who left Waltham Abbey on June 10th , 1881 , for a tour round the world , was about to return , it was felt by the inhabitants of the town that steps should be taken to welcome the " Squire " home . The uncertainty of the day and hour of his return however prevented any very ( 6 elaborate preparations being made , and what was done was the work of a few hours only . Mr Colvin arrived at Waltham Cross station at 6.45 p.m. on Tuesday evening , and entering a single horse brougham , was driven to Mr Corble's gateway , where he was met and welcomed home , by Mr T. Chapman ( chairman ) and Messrs . C. Chapman , S. Tyler , C. Speller , members of the Local Buard who had adjourned their meeting for the purpose of being present , with Mr H. Gougà ( clerk ) , Mr J. Dalby ( vestry clerk ) , and Mr C. W. Wiggs ( sur Veyor ) . There were also present : Dr. Henderson , Mr Allsup , Mr Bentley , Mr Ainsworth Marshall , and other residente , who one and all cordially greeted Mr Colvin . After conversing for some minutes with these gentlemen , Mr Colvin entered an open carriage , accompanied by Mr T. Chapman , Mr Allsup , Dr. Henderson , and Mr Gough , and was drawn through the town by an enthusiastic crowd , headed by a number of torch bearers , the Waltham Town Band playing appropriate airs , under the direction of Mr C. Oram , and a detachment of the Fire Brigade , under the Superintendent , Mr J. Button . After a flattering reception through the town , where an immense number of persone lined the streets , Mr Colvin , on arriving at the New Inn , briefly but feelingly thanked the inhabitants for the warm and altogether unexpected reception they had given him . Since he last met them he had travelled a great deal , and had seen many scenes ; but none which pleased him so much as seeing the faces of his fellow - townsmen around him . While thanking them heartily and sincerely he asked to be excused from making a long speech , as he was anxious to see those who were near and dear to him , his mother and sister . The brief , manly remarks were received with loud and continued cheers , during which Mr Colvin drove off to Monkhams . The carriage was supplied by Mr C. Phipps , of Highbridge - street . Stray Notes . [ BY ANNOTATOR . ] " Nothing extenuate , nor set down aught in malice . " 101 While watching some practising at Monkham's Cricket Ground recently , I could not but admire the excellent fielding of two four - legged " scouters , " who rejoiced respectively in the names of " Gorry " and " Dan . " Of the two " Gorry " is , I think , the better , as he fields a ball better than his companion , and is somewhat swifter , though both are a pattern for many a cricketer for diligence and quietness in the field . If there is one fault to be found it is that in returning the ball , iustead of throwing it to the wicket , they will persist in carrying it , and even doing that in their mouths ; and " Gorry " has a habit of retaining the ball unduly , his appearance boing such as to prevent anyone except an inti mate friend attempting to recover it forcibly . " Gorry " and " Dan are not members of the club , but are valuable dogs , and the faithful friends and companions of the popular president of the Monkham's Cricket Club , 66 |
