7 UMBALLA SKY RACES . FIRST MEETING , 1884-85 .. STEWARDS : SURGEON - MAJOR R. ANDERSON A. M. W. BIGNELL , ESQ . MAJOR SCOTT CHISHOLME Honorary Secretary , Lancers . 189038 COL . BUSHMAN , c.l , 9th Lancers . IM AJOB MURRAY , R. H. A. MAJOR B. HUMPREY , Brigade Major . MAJOR SHERRINGHAM , Cheshire *** Regiment . LIBUT . ENBAGB , H. L. Infant First Day , Thursday , 4th December 1884 . Readers of the Asian will remember what a sporting eru for Umballa last cold season was . Garrisoned by some of the leading sporting regiments of the service , there were besides the interminable polo and cricket - which detracted so much from the old women's games of tennis and badminton - there were the fortnightly gymkhanas and the monthly sky meetings , which were one and all brilliant successes . This cold season opens with equally as good prospects . Though three of the sporting regiments that were here last season , riz , the 11th Bengal Cavalry , the 2nd Queen's and King's Own Borderers ( the latter a host in themselves ) have been moved in relief , the one corps that is left , the 9th Lancers , is all powerful enough to leaveu the new arrivals with its spirit of sport , and we have early had proof of this in the very successful meeting just brought off . Major Chisholme is the right man in the right place , and all sport - loving men in the neighbourhood of Umballa may flatter themselves on having every opportunity afforded them of bringing out their cattle . A proof of the popularity of the prospectus put forward is in the liberal response made to it . The events were one and all most opeu , that nearly every owner of a likely quad considered that the terms of one or more of the races especially suited his individual stable . Those who know Umballa in the cold season do not need to be told that the attendance on the course was very full each day . arrangements on the course were perfect ; but if there was one drawback it was in the heedless delays between the events caused by the gentlemen jockeys retarding their toilettes . Major Chisholme will , I am sure , be the first to recognize this drawback and to check on future occasions . On both days business commenced early , but from these delays , the last races were run off when it was quite dark , and nearly all the attendance had left the course . This small inconvenience was further miuimized by the excellent sport provided . Most of the events of this day brought together respectable fields of quality and number , and resulted in closely contested finishes , and above all we witnessed not only a contest of the merits of the various horses , but of the superior skill of the many accomplished horsemen , seel ca ad how hman 201 The Proceedings opened with six ponies stripping for the 13 hands race . Of these , Nina with her Ajmere aud Mhow laurels fresh upon her , aird only taken out of her horse - box the day before , was made favourite ; but the stable made a mistake in putting Taylor up , aud thus increasing the pony's heavy impost by 5lbs . , when one or two first rate gentlemen riders were standing down , and would have gladly accepted the mount . The resuit proved that , however good Nina may be , she cannot afford to despise ponies of Auchinleck's calibre and give them 14lbs . , for Mr. Connor's pony , after an exciting finish , just beat Nina by a head on the post . Auchinleck was ridden by Mr. Tipping , who can give , not receive from . some of the professionals a little over best 13 9th walies . 18 months ago , is quite out of all form at present . We wish his popular owner better luck with his stable before the season The three - quarter mile spurt for Arabs , C. B's and Galloways brought out only three candidates . This was regarded as a certainty for Whalebone , though it is hardly his distance ; and if the Arab was worth his hay and corn , he should have been able to make this old horse lower his colors after they got beyond half a mile on their journey . The weights on the pony chase , though set out in the terms of the race , were not worked out drawback and put down against pony , which was somewhat of to those who required to make careful calculations before venturing their modest investments at the Pari Mutuel . The race resulted in a close struggle between Madame Ochse and Jim , both steered by well known - horsemen , and the latter outstaying the mare won , Madame Ochse having to look to some future occasion to obtain a winning bracket . The open pony race introduced us to an old favorite in Sally B , she was meeting a more modern crack in Georgie and over à distance better suited to the latter . Grissette , whose glories seem to have departed , was with Georgie made favorite . In the race the lot kept fairly on terms for the first half mile , then Sally B just played with The match them aud won without being called upon . next , and two diminutive quadrupeds named Enormous and Immense came to the post . Enormous was the less diminutive , wou very but certainly the superior of the other , for he cleverly , The race for maiden horses brought out three candi dates , and of these Edenderry was made favorite . Forget - me not was an absentee , her race earlier in the evening having been enough for her in one evening . Enbrook with her light weight made the running , but succumbed early , and then Edenderry settling Cadger in the last few strides won a good race . The local race brought out a field of eight ponies ; but all interest in this event was marred by its being run in the dark . The start could not be seen and it was not before the leading ponies were within the railed course that Parah was seen leading and won without difficulty . The weights not being entered on the card for several of the events was an oversight that might well have been rectified . came FIRST RACE . For all ponies 13 hands and under . Second Day , Saturday , 6th December 1884 . A small lottery filled on each race set down on to - day's card , and if there was any difference in the character of the sport it certainly was an improvement on that of Thursday . There were two very close finishes to - day , in one of which the judge gave a verdict of " dead heat " between Begum and Bay Bess , though many erroneously assumed Begum had won and the men in charge of the Pari Mutuel were so sauguine such was the case that without waiting for official confirmation they paid out over Begum , but fortunately were able to get back the money again . The attendance was again very full . The first event was for purely maiden ponies and eight candidates turned out for au effort to lose this qualification . New Guinea is gradually being weened from her frivolities , and to - day behaved with marked circumspection in that she went down to the post quietly , went through the ordeal of a couple of false starts without any display of temper and ultimately got off very well . The race , however , was early over , for Greyhen had her field settled before half the journey was done and came in an easy winner . Were it not for the presence of the winner , the race between the rest of the field would have been a very pretty one , for the lot finished very well together . The All Horse race , which was next in order , brought five horses to the post , and of these Namesake was made favorite . Kobold , Mr. Mac Dougall's old chaser , being entrusted with second place in public confidence . In the race Namesake ap peared to have been interfered with near the distance post , though unintentionally , and he could not get a chance of com ing to the front , while a splendid finish was provided between Kobold and Edenderry . The former got up to the girths of the latter on his off side and while Mr. Fliutoff had the free use of his whip hanc , Major Chisholme had no room for his , and at this disadvantage the two horses raced up in front of the stand locked together , but just before they came to the post Mr. Flintoff fore ed Kobold , head in front and secured the verdict . On the first day in a similar set to Major Chisholme had secured the advantage . The Round the Course race brought out a large field and it was regarded as a moral for the Arabs , of which only two came to the post , the third , Micky Free , being still in his stable at the sweet will of his syce . Telephone was made favorite ; but if form had directed public opinion , Red Cross should have occupied this position , for at the late Meerut Meeting in a similar race he ran close up to Yabog in very good time . To - day Sally B led the field a merry dance for three parts of the journey , but died away in the last half mile , when Red Cross went to the front and won easily . Telephone could have caught Sally B perhaps at any period of the race up to 14 , and though getting up to her finally , the effort took it all out of him and he fell an easy victim to Red Cross . None of the others were ever in it . The fourth event on the card was set down as a steeplechase , 24 miles , and the starter apparently labored under an erior , for when the field turned out and went down to the mile post , he waited behind for some time to start them on their journey for the jump event . Before the public wind was set right as to the terms of the race having being incorrectly printed , there was much speculation as to how some of the horses would behave in this new departure for them , and especially how the young lad Carrol , who had been put into boots into either of which he could have crawled and Lid away , was going to steer Hassarac ; but all suspense was relieved when the mistake was explained and the horses were despatched on their journey over the flat course . Enbrook came away at once aud won somewhat easily . The T. B. Confederacy have got together some very good horses at present , and now that the head quarters of the Confederacy will be located at Peshawar , where that very sporting regiment the 60th Rifles are now quartered with the equally sporting Dorsetshire Regiment , 8 , ort ought to look up in the Punjab . Enbrook is another of the General Parrott's stud produce , and is by Egotist out of Constance . She is a fine looking filly aud ought to give a rare account of herself next season . At Peshawar she will be thrown away . selling Race for ponies had five candidates for change of owner ship . Public favor went on Begum with Lopear as second string ; but the latter has much gone off her Dehra form . Her present owner merely plays her at polo , aud has taken her out of training . Begum led from the start and appeared to be winuing easily , when Mr. Tipping by a most determined effort caught up to her in front of the stand , and after a gaud set to Bay Bess appeared to die away again in the last stride , but not before she made a dead heat of it with the little mare , who in the next stride was half a length in front again . The consola tion race for all ponies that had been running at the meeting , though showing five on the card , brought only three to the post , Wild Thyme and Sunbeam being absentees . The race was run in the dark owing to the protracted delays of the jockey's toilets throughout the evening . As the three ponies came into view in the rails , Parah aud Nina were running neck and neck in front ; and after a punishing finish Mr. Little succeeded in landing Parah a winner by a neck on the post .
