S. C. KING'S OWN BORDERERS ' GYMKHANA . T Umballa was enlivened on the 19th of December with a Gymkhana got up by the Borderers . The Race Stand was crowded with the fair sex , who appeared to take the greatest interest in the proceedings . The sport opened with a Three - furlong Flat Race , in which Mistletoe , getting away with the best of the start , fairly squandered his field upset . In the Open Chase , Silverlegs and ting a great favourite in Petticoat . Mr. Jenner's stable started in equal demand , but a rare turn up was the result , the despised Clare . well ridden by Mr. Weller , winning easily by three lengths . queaker and Recruit both fell . For the Cup seven good looking ponies faced the starter , of which Bagpipe was most fancied , but he destroyed his chance by refusing the second fence from home when leading , and Jessie , always holding Lowlander safe , won by half a length . The Strangers , Purse to those in the know " was a foregone conclusion for Soapey Sponge , and he cantered in an easy winner by three lengths . A Hack Race with eight starters ended a very good day's sport . Polly , ridden by her owner , winning by a short head from Susan . Details appended . FIRST RACE.-Rs. 32. For Regiment C.B. Ponies . Bendigo , d . c . b . m . Cigarette , First Day , Tuesday , 23rd January 1883 The first day's races of what promises to be a very pleasant little meeting have been brought off most successfully . The stakes are small and the lotteries are very modest , yet for all that the love for sport is inherent in the Englishman , and the filthy lucre is not what inspires him with the feeling for competing against his fellows . There is a large garrison here during the winter months , and it is unnecessary to add that there are any number of ponies , good , bad and indifferent , and the faith each owner has in the inmates of his stable begets that longing for a trial of their prowess , and the result is these little meetings where the same pouies keep on running against each other though of course under altered conditions each time . The finishes to - day were nearly all very close things . B - atrice ran a grand pony in the Revival Stakes , and just managed to land the stakes by a nose , Alpine Rose and Flora making a dead heat for second place . It will be observed what a delicate position the judge was in this event , but Major Le Merchant is not the man who would get flurried and fail to distinguish the position of the ponies in such a difficulty as he had to encounter on this occasion . I know some judges who would have turned round and asked the first bystander " which won , " and then have given his verdict accord ing to the answer . The attendance on the course was very numerous , and the splendid band of the 9th Lancers discoursed sweet music during the intervals of the races . The course is in perfect order , and all the arrangements reflect credit on the committee . 4th Race . - 1-50 P. M. - Heiover Plate . - Value Rs . 49. As they came round the corner , Alpine Rose , with , Flora close at her quarters , was seen well in front on the extremo outside , while Beatrice was prominent on the inside . It was as much as Alpine Rose's jockey could do to keep her on the track as she was boring out the whole way .
