Transcription They did not get away on their legs together , as soon . As they settled down to their work , the native on Chalouf went out a cracker , but the Arab was done with after he had gone a quarter of a mile , and Whale bone taking up the running came round the turn for home , and with Petrarch and Bosphorus a couple of lengths behind him led to the dis tance where Mr. Drummond called on his horse , who answering gamely came away and stalling off a challenge of Whalebone's landed the stakes for his sporting owner by a length in 1min . 32 secs . Very close third .

All off to a good start , when Soapey Sponge at once made play , with Beggarman in attendance . By the time they got to the far side of the course Soapey Sponge had a lead of fifty lengths in front of Beggar man , who again was a dozen lengths ahead of the ruck . At the mile post Mr. Gordon took a pull at Soapey , and when the others came within hail , he let his head go again , but the pony had not much

Meanwhile Nutbean and Cigarette , who was going very leisurely at first , had been gaining on Beggarman , and caught him up at the half mile post , from where the latter was completely done , and came on hand over hand up to the leader whom they passed at the rise in the hill . The race was now virtually between Nutbean and Cigarette , but though the latter had gained wonderfully on the others , she tired away at the distance and had not enough left for the final struggle , thus leaving Nutbean to win by three lengths . The long interval between the two dates is due to the excessive wet weather we have had . It commenced to rain the day after the first day's races were held , yet the lotteries were held in the evening , and that day would dawn with a clear sky , and a bright sun would evaporate the wet in a few hours ; but these expectations were not realized , and the wet weather continued for three full days . The country was one sheet of water , and all racing out of the question ; in fact the course was affected in an extra degree . There is a heavy layer of litter laid down which had absorbed a vast amount of water , and the rat holes ,

A good number of pots boiled over , favorites behaving badly . Per . haps the only exception was Scimitar , who was made a strong favorite for the Pony Chase and went out from the start at his usual pace , and , jumping without a mistake , won with ease .
