No time taken . THE SHANGHAI PAPER HUNT CLUB . SATURDAY'S HUNT . Notwithstanding the inclemency of the wea ther a good afternoon's sport was provided for the members on Saturday afternoon . The meet , for the first time this season , was in the Hongkew District , the start being advertised to take place near the Rifle Butts . There was some difficulty , however , in getting there , as the Woosung Road was blocked up , and all conveyances were compelled to stop close to Garden Villas . Another difficulty presented itself in reaching the spot , 88 there was a party from one of the British men - of war at target practice . However , notwith standing these drawbacks , a goodly number assembled at the appointed hour , both mounted and on foot . Among the prominent members of the hunt we noticed Mr. Craven on Sweet briar , Mr. Ilbert on White Velvet , Mr. J. W. H. Burgoyne on White Thorn , Mr. Dudgeon on Black Auster , Mr. Ruttonjee on Ernani , Mr. Galles on Sidedrum , Mr. Brandt on Second Cornet , Mr. Latham on Bec Sallé , Mr. Walker on Black Velvet , Mr. Malherbe on Capitaine , Mr. B. A. Clarke , Mr. E. G. Low , Mr. Burkill , Mr. W. Dunman , Mr. Colvin , & c .; there were also two or three ladies present . Between 20 and 30 ponies went away at 20 minutes to four at a rattling pace , the paper being laid from the back of the Rifle Butts across the country over the first stone bridge on the old Woosung railway line , into the country and back across the second bridge , taking a line down towards the Camp , and then doubling round , and along the country skirting the Yangtse - po Road home to Way - side , finish ing over the usual cut jump . The paper was laid by the Master , Mr. Arb not , and he was accompanied by Mr. Carli , Mr. F. Maitland , Mr. Maodonald , and others , the distance being estimated at about eight miles . A very short time elapsed after the foxes arrived at the winning post before the hounds ap peared in sight , and it was evident as they raced across the flat that there would be a close finish between the first three , and these were Mr. Malherbe , Mr. Colvin on Redivivus , and Mr. Dudgeon . The two former took the last jump together , but Mr. Colvin's pony could not quite rècover himself , and Mr. Malherbe passed between the flags about half a length in advance of Mr. Colvin ; Mr. Dudgeon was a good third ; Mr. Walker , close up , fourth ; Mr. Brandt fifth ; Mr. Ilbert sixth ; Mr. Ruttonjee seventh ; and Mr. Galles eighth . These , we believe , were the only riders that crossed the last jump . The race was described to us ag very fast , and the paper laid so plentifully that there were no checks . There were plenty of jumps , and plenty of water , and also a few spills , but nothing worthy of mention . The want of checks appeared to be a drawback to the " old soldiers " in paper - hunting , as they invariably allow the boys " to blaze away until they lose the paper , and then the old ' uns come up , with fresh ponies , find the paper , aud by experienced horsemanship win the hunts . One old rider informed us that it was " a steeplechase , and nothing more . " There was a large number of spectators , considering the weather , at the finish , and the road in the vicinity was lined with vehicles of the usual varied descriptions . 66 |
