10 UMBALLA RACES , 1883 . From our own Correspondent . First Day , Tuesday , 13th March . STEWARDS : IT..UOL . DALBYMPLE , A. QM G. MAJOR THE HON'BLE H LEGGE , 9th Lancers . LT . - COL . A. PRINSIP , 11th Bengal Lancers 20 i Clerk of the Seales , -CAPT DUNNAGE R. HA . Starter MR . BEATTY MATOR ST . J. LEMARCHANT , R. H A. , Honorary Secretary . The race meeting and the Bengal Cavalry , as well as the Inter - Regi mental Polo Tournaments , have brought together a very large gather . ing , and the prospects of the meeting e very bright in the future , though I cannot say the finishes to - day were very close . The lotteries have filled well , and I am sanguine that before the meeting concludes I shall be able to report in the highest terms about it . Major La Mar chant is the right man in the right place . He has taken infinite pains with the course , and has framed a very inviting prospectus which has attracted several outside stables . The recent rain we have had has im proved the going on the course . I am sorry to say the polo tourna ments , which are being held simultaneously with the race meeting , are likely to affect the latter , as many ponies that would otherwise have been run in some or other of the events are being exclusively used for the games . Indeed the first day's card has visibly suffered from the polo . The steeplechases had to be expunged from the card , as those of the polo players who would have had a flutter between the flags , refus ed to go , as in case of accidents they would not have been able to play with their teams . Next season the Honorary Secretaries have arranged to fix the dates of the two events apart and not Concurrently as on this and previous occasions . them to run Black However , a hurdle race made some amends for the otherwise baldness of the card in sensational events . There were ive events set down for to - day , and they brought out poor fields in respect of quality . I should omit to mention that an objection was lodged against the celebrat ed pony Black Prince on the score of height , and he with the Lahore pony Miss Fit , who produced a second class meeting certificate , were called up for measurement . After a little trouble . Prince measured 13-2 in his plates , but one of the stewards on examining the plates found them to be thick at the toes , and fining away to the edge of a knife at the heels , so he refused to make any allowance for plates . These were at length removed , and the pony again put under the standard , and he failed to measure 13-2 . The Stewards gave the owners representative the option of showing the pony in standard plates kept in the possession of the Honorary Secre . tary , but that gentleman refused to submit his pony to any more tests and scatched him from all his engagements at the meeting . Miss Fit then was put through her agony . No sooner put under the standard than she , like the elever mare she is , sprawled out and might have easily measured 12-2 hands , but one of the stewards , more unreasonable than the rest , insisted on the pony's legs being put under her . An argument arose as to whether the way she stood was not her natural position , while others maintained she should be standing with her legs in a perpendicular position , and this never being adopted as in keeping with the rules on the subject , the pony was made to stand up , aud she could not get under the standard below 13-1 hands . The owner was offered the option of bringing the mare up again in the afternoon for re - measurement , but the owner declined , and thus a most dangerous rival was removed from the Tom Tit Stakes . Jaffir afforded much amusement by saying , in the presence of some of the stewards , that Miss Fitz what you know all peoples saying 15 hands mare is going to run in 13 hands race . " This remark may perhaps have influenced the stewards in insisting on measuring her . At the start Troubles never come singly , and in Miss Fit's owner's case this was exemplified this day . The pony ran in the Hot Water Plate Race , for which she and the Baron were made favorites . No other pony in the race was considered of any account . Red Skin went off at score , while the Baron and Miss Fit hung back last , waiting on each other , and each was determined not to leave the other , while both expected the rest of the field would run themselves out , and come back to them . But they calculated without due regard to the quality of the ponies , and it was only too late they realized that they had waited too long , and that Red Skin showed no signs of giving in . When about three - fourths of the journey had been traversed , Blackburn began to give his pony her head , and she had to put on the pace to get up to the rest . and then only managed to get into fourth place , when Red Skin passed the post . Octave Black Princ's stable produced another surprise to - day in Daisy . who ran away from her moderate company , and won easily . was entered for this event , but having met with an injury in her stable during the night , she could not come to the post . Dick Turpin was favorite for the Hurdle . Race , but Rejected lead him safe all through , and won in a canter . A great pot was upset by Sherwood winning the Bedouin Plate , beating the favorite Euphrates , who had been backed on his renowned form , Though Ruby and Ariel had the entire support of the talent for the Tom Tit Stakes , The Doe , well ridden by Mr. Johnson , came out Had the sup from the start , and never gave the others a chance . porters of the favorites a retentive memory , they would have remem bered what a close second The Doe ran to Ruby at Lucknow , and to - day , when they were meeting , I believe , on more favorable terms , there was little room to doubt the issue as it transpired . There was a very large attendance in the stand and enclosure , and Mr. Santly was present , and did a small business as bookmaker , while the open pari mutuel also helped a large amount of money to change . hands . Red skin , with Mr. Reid up , took up the running at once , and was leading by a street ere the 14 mile post was reached , with the rest in single file , and Miss Tit , apparently waiting on Baron , bringing up the rear . This order continued to the mile post , when all , but the leader , began to make their efforts ; but too late , for Red Skin passed the post ten lengths before Blazes . Miss Fit managed to work up into fourth place . Time , 5 min . 4secs . Second Day , Thursday , 15th March 1888 . The racing to - day was an improvement on that of the first day and provided at least a couple of good finishes . Sport comeniced with the Galloway Handicap , for which four went to the 20st , though only two of them . Major Cook's mare and the Arab Volunteer , were of any quality . Volunteer has only just come up to this side of India , and it was very plucky of his owner to back him right through against the crack Atalanta . He was made favorite in the lottenes , and having the advantage of the mare by 17lbs . had no any one wanting a elinking good galloway showing blood and stainina could not do better than secure him . refused Four horses were turned out for the Umballa Chase , all looking very fit . Grey Friar was first favorise , but at the weights , and even if he had not fallen , could hardly have had any chance against , At Last . The latter horse ran very well to - day , and is looking vastly improved to what he did at Meerut . Hector was out of it from an early period of the race , while Rejected behaved infamously He refused to start , and then fell at the first fence , and again at the second fence . He is very good over hurdies and on the flat , but steeplechasing him will not make his owner's fortune . For the Lilliputian Race Cameo and Sattara had a host of supporters , while Strathmore was not even thought of , and Bismillah did not turn up on the course The favorites were never in it . Robinson took Strathmore to the front at once , and though Sattara made his elfort later , the other had still lots of go in him , and won comfortably . No one appeared to remember how well this pony ran at Lucknow in the great cup race , when he finished fourth , very close behind the winner , and again his performance in the race for Elabi Bux's Purse was by no means discreditable . In the Selling Kace Admiral was made favorite , and his supporters counted on the race as being all over but the shouting . Rejected , who incurred disgrace in his running in the earlier part of the evening , came out splendidly in this event , and in Tingey's hands was landed a winner after a splendid race with Yanathon , the favorite having to content himself with the barren honors of third place . Rejected was put up for sale , and was bought in by his owner at Rs . 20 over his stated value . He is a valuable horse , and will be heard of often in Upper India . where he remains . The open pari mutuel hid good business to - day The bookmaker is somewhat antalizing is operations . He lays very small odds on the fields , a horse is backed three or four times , he is at once erased and from the list . Further he refuses to lay anything beyond a hundred rupees . This sort of work is more suited for school boys flush of pocket money than racing men who are disposed to hedge . at FIRST RACE . -Galloway Handicap . Value Rs . 300. This order was preserved to the fourth fence , where At Last took the lead . but was as speedily deprived of it . Here , too , Grey Friar fell , and though quickly recovered and set going again . failed to make up for his lost ground , and was from here virtually out of the race . Hector , with At Last in close attendance , shewed the way over the water which he cleared in style . and maintaining his lead , came on to the bound fence on the off side of the course , when At Last again passed him . while Mr. Flintoff's old horse had yet further discom . forts ahead . for he pecked badly at the next obstacle a ditch without the element , but soon made up for his mistake and was level with At Last ere the turn homewards . I would like to call the attention of the Bengal stables to the ex cellent lotteries that have been held during the meeting here . There is little doubt that had many more stables been present a much larger business would have been done . Let us hope the Upper Indis meet ings are recovering themselves , and that the same influence that have helped to make the spring meetings go off so successfully will be at work again next autumn . I hear that Mr. Fitch , disencouraged by last year's failure , is much averse to take up the Secretaryship of the Dehra Races ; indeed it is predicted that Dehra will see no race meet ing next October . On dit a well known sportsman is to hold the appointment of commandant of the Viceroy's Body Guard by that time , and it is to be hoped the racing community in these parts will exercise their influence with the gallant Captain , and induce him to get out prospectus , raise subscriptions and bring off the meeting Before the prospectus is published it should be submitted for the opinion of the Bengal stables , who deserve well of the sporting mer up here . Again the Lucknow , Dehra , Umballa , and Meerut Autumn prospectuses should come out a little earlier than they do , and owners in distant parts of the country would then be able to decide whether it would suit them to come to this side of India . Why cannot each meeting have one rich prize to offer so as to tempt the horses from Bombay , Bengal , and Madras ? Next year I believe the race for the Civil Service Cup will be the grandest ever witnessed in the country . I hear that Arabia is to be searched through for ponies at the instance of several sporting men , each of whom has set his heart on the trophy . But to return to this day's card . There were no foregone conclusions in any of to - day's events . The Pony Chase , though won by Bismillah the favorito , was a splendid sight from first to last . North Star was out of it early from coming down , but the rest of the field all kept together , and the result was in doubt up to the last when all finished close up . At Last and Grey Friar met to - day in the Handicap Chase on 12lbs . altered terms to those on which they ran on Thursday . Hector's per formance can hardly be laid to his disadvantage . He lost a lot of ground by going on the wrong side of a flag at the post and rails , and had to be pulled back to go over the ground again . He never made up ground . There would have been a very good race at the finish , but At Last was made too much of in the early part of the race , that when he wanted something in hand for the final struggle , he was blown and came down at the last fence , allowing Grey Friar to win easily . Well wood and Rejected were both much fancied for the Consolation Handi cap . The former's owner backed the mare right through , and took little heed of the lightly weighted Admiral , who having the services of the brilliant Blackburn , ran a great horse and won a fine race . For the Grand Stand Stakes Aylmah and Strathmore were equal favorites , while Daisy , who had shown such excellent form on the first day , was held of no account in her present company and was sold for Rs . 50 in the lottery . In Tingey's hands she contributed one more instance to the very long list of glorious uncertainties , and brought much grief to the supporters of the favorites . The Jhansie stable was thus revenged somewhat over the rejection of Black Prince . Green had a narrow escape iu the big chase when riding At Last . When the horse scrambled up after his fall Green's foot was caught in the stirrup and he was dragged for about fifty yards before he managed to get free . This was achieved by a pure accident , viz . , by his boot coming off ; he thus escaped with a few slight outs and bruises . |
