[ FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT . ] UMBALLA , 17th February . THERE.was the usual crowded attendance to - day at the last meeting which the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers will hold in Umballa , as they are homeward - bound in the early autumn , that is , if a perverse fate does not send them to Suakim or Kandahar instead . With two regiments recently arrived from England , the Highland Light Infantry and the Royal Irish , a mountain battery in camp here , and L.A. , R.H.A. just marched in from Lucknow , the station is re markably full , and in consequence the stand and enclosure were nicely filled , and presented an appearance decidedly more animated and fes tive than is usual at the big biennial meetings , at which business is rather the order of the day than mere pleasure . Good fields and excellent racing added to the enjoyment of the afternoon , while between the events we listened to the music of the first - rate band of the Lancers , and refreshed ourselves with coffee and cigarettes or dainty drinks in their hospitable tent , where a few of their trophies of invincible prowess in the polo field were displayed to our admiring gaze , the handsome Cup just carried off at the Calcutta Tournament being conspicuous by its size among a heap of others , and attracting general attention . The programme opened with the Regimental Cup , a steeplechase for all horses the property of officers of the regiment . Terrible Billy was rather fancied for this , but after a well - con tested struggle , in which the fencing of every horse engaged was a treat to see , Beeswing with 21lbs . , the best of the weights , was landed a winner by a couple of lengths for the second year in suc cession . Barbara , splendidly ridden by Mr. Bishop , was first past the post for Major Mackenzie's Cup , beating the redoubtable Jim by the shortest of heads with nothing to spare . The Homeward bound Stakes afforded an exercise gallop for Lopear , who won how he liked in the slow time of 62 seconds . The next race , the Ladies ' Nomi ation , furnished the greatest surprise of the afternoon . It was considered a certainty for Parah , but Camaralzaman , piloted by his popular owner , Major Legge , raced away at once with the lead and keeping it throughout won after a most exciting set - to with the favourite by a short head . Another excellent race was provided by the strug gle for the Adelaide Cup . The finish was so close that it was not until the numbers went up that it was known that Edenderry had just failed to catch the Judge's eye . A real good day's sport was brought to a most successful close by the Polo Scurry . Nutmeg won the first heat easily , but lacking condition was just beaten by Grisette in the second , and was left standing by Mr. Jenner's handsome little grey in the third and final one . The stewards were : Major the Hon'ble H. Legge , Mr. M. O. Little , Major Scott Chisholme , Mr. W. K. Jenner . Honorary Secretary : Mr. F. F. Colvin ; Judge : Mr. Day : Starters : Mr. Marshall and Cap tain Irving ; Clerk of the Scales : Mr. Forsythe . FIRST RACE . - The Regimental Cup . Value Rs . 199. Presented by Major the Hon'ble H. As soon as they were over Blackwater took the lead followed at an interval of three or four lengths by Beeswing and Terrible Billy ; Kobold and the Masher bringing up the rear . This order was maintained almost without variation for 1 miles , all fencing without a mistake , when Beeswing passed Blackwater , and availing himself of his 211bs , advantage , Mr. Jenner sent her along and made the pace warm ; Terrible Billy struggling gamely on now took second place , but the little horse was stopped by his heavy impost , and in spite of Mr. Little's determined riding failed to catch the mare who won comfortably by a couple of lengths , Blackwater a good third . When about three - fourths of the journey was accomplished Barbara and Marie closed on the leaders , and the remaining fences were jumped by the four in a cluster , Jim holding a slight advantage . But as soon as they were over the last hurdle Mr. Bishop made a determined effort , and Barbara , responding gallanty , won an exciting race by a short head . Camaralzaman at once cut out the work , and closely followed by Marie , and at an interval of five lengths by Parah , led the way round at a clinking pace . The others were all hopelessly outpaced . No alteration occurred till half - a - mile from home when Marie was beaten , and it was evidently going to be a race between the two leaders . At the quarter - mile it looked as if Camaralzaman was collared , but Parah rather cut it at the finish , and the game little chesnut , doing his level best in response to his rider's call , manag ed to keep in front till the post was passed , and won the handsome bracelet for Mrs. Montgomery by a head .
