THE TROOPS COMPRISING THE FIRST ARMY Corps for active service comprise , roughly reckon ed , the following : -2,000 Artillery with 78 guns ; 5,000 Cavalry ; and 12,000 Infantry : say a total force of 19,000 men . Of the three regi ments of British Cavalry , the 9th Lancers are at Rawulpindi ; the 8th Hussars at Meerut and the 12th Hussars at Bangalore . Of the native cavalry , the 14th Bengal Lancers and 15th Bengal Cavalry are at Rawulpindi ; the 8th Bengal Cavalry at Lucknow , the 10th Bengal Lancers at Multan , and the 11th Bengal Lancers at Nowgong . The 3rd Punjab Cavalry , Central India Horse and Poona Horse are also under orders . Of the British Infantry , only two batta lions are at Rawulpindi : of the native Infantry , five out of 14 regiments under orders are there . Three of the Field Artillery batteries and two of the Garrison batteries detailed for service , are at Rawulpindi . Taking a division to consist of one British and three Native Cavalry regiments , and three British and nine Native Infantry regi ments , besides Artillery , we could get - by the addition of four Native Infantry Regiments two strong field divisions ; having over , one Bri tish and two Native Cavalry regiments : and six regiments of European Infantry . The addition specified would bring the total strength up to 22,000 ; which is still 3,000 short of the 25,000 required for our First Army Corps . It will be seen that the force , as at present con stituted , is unusually strong in European troops .
NAVAL COMMANDER ATTACKED BY A BOY .
on
An unusual act of insubordination occurred board H.M.S. Minotaur a few days ago . A boy , about 16 years old , was brought before Captain Britten charged with being incorrigibly unclean in his habits . While he wrs being interrogated he made a sudden rush at the captain , and , aided by the roll of the ship succeeded in knocking him backward on to the ward - room skylight . Had this been unshipped , as is usually the case , the consequences would probably have been very serious . The boy was made a prisoner of , and will be tried by court - martial , of course .

THE ESSEX HUNT STEEPLECHASES . - At the steeplechases in connection with the Essex Hunt , on Thursday in last week , the popular master , Sir Henry Selwin - Ibbetson , Bart . , secured two races with Bailey , the huntsman , on Deception and Maid of all Work ; while R. B. Colvin , Esq . , J.P. , piloted Mr Deacon's Stud groom to victory in the steeplechase plate .
THE INDIAN RELIEFS .
The following is the revised programme of reliefs for the approaching season :
British Cavalry . - 9th Lancers from Umballa to England . 2nd Dragoon Guards ( Bays ) from England to Umballa .
PIGSTICKING .
THE MUTTRA PIGSTICKING CUP . From Correspondent of the " Pioneer . "
HE GANGES CUP having been abandoned for this year , THE owing to the misfortunes which have overtaken the best jungles of the district over which the race for that Cup was wont to be un , the 3rd Dragoon Guards , who are now stationed at Muttra , thinking that a meeting in their country would not be unwelcome to hog - hunting sportsmen , decided to get up a sup to replace the Ganges . In this object they were considerably strengthened by the kind and generous support of that most keen of sportsmen , the Maharaj Rana of Dholepove , who not only volunteered to lend every assistance in his power both monetary and otherwise , to the enterprise , but also promised to enter a large number of his horses . The entries , considering the ill - timed rumours of war , and the Durbar at Rawalpindi , were mor numerous than could have been expected under the circumstances ; thereby showing how willing the sportsmen of the country were to back up even such a daring enterprise as the formation of a new cup , under the auspices of a regiment only just come out to the country , and therefore practically " new to the game . " The total number of entries was 43 , amongst which will be noticed some of the best known " pigstickers " of the day . The camp was pitched at Perkham , which is exactly half way between Agra and Muttra , and being placed only a few hundred yards from the Railway station every convenience was afforded to comers and goers . The meeting itself was a decided success , and the thanks of all those who took part in it , are due to the energetic Honorary Secretary , Mr. C. Williams , who performed all the arduous duties of his post to the entire satisfaction of every body concerned , and succeeded in making the whole of the arrangements so perfect that everything passed off without a single hitch . The weather was not too hot , the country was perfect , and pigs very numerous - three items which contributed greatly to the enjoyment of the meeting . The entries were as follows :
