ECHOES OF

NOVELTIES in racing at the French seaside have , at various times during the last year or two , exercised the admiring faculties of British journalists , but I am enabled by a reference to the correct card " of the Monk ham's Races , run on the 26th ult . , triumphantly re - assert the originality of the British sportsman , and to prove that , in the matter of in genuity , he requires no start from the sportsmen of any other country . In the Zoological Handi cap - a distance handicap of 150 yards - there was displayed as fine a specimen of racing novelty as the most ingenious of foreign inventors could have designed . The entries were twenty in number , being as follows :

SPORTS AT MONKHAMS . Yesterday ( Thursday ) was a day of unusual excitement in Waltham Abbey and neighbour hood , a series of sports having been arranged to take place at Monkham's Hall , the seat of R. B. Colvin , Esq . , J.P. The shops in the town were closed in the afternoon to enable the tradesmen and their assistants to be present , and the children attending the Leverton and Board Schools were granted a holiday to witness the amusements . The weather was all that could be desired , though very hot , and consequently there were a great number of people on Monkham's Hill , who seemed thoroughly to enjoy the treat provided for them . The cricket ground pre sented an unusual appearance with its ropes stakes , flags , tents , etc. , and it may be added that such a large concourse of people has seldom been seen on this spot , from which such a charm ing view of the surrounding county is to be had . In the reserved enclosure Mr Colvin entertained a large number of guests , who represented the gentry of the neighbourhood for some distance round , Mrs Farnell Watson ( sister to Mr Colvin ) and Miss Colvin assisting in entertaining
the visitors . The " Squire , " with his brothers , Messrs . C. H. and F. F. Colvin , were untiring in promoting the success of the sports and the comfort of all .
The stewards were : -R . B. Colvin , Esq . , secretary and stake holder ; Major Tait , G. Dawson , Esq . , and F. F. Colvin , Esq . , 9th Lancers , starters ; C. E. Green , Esq . , A. J. Edwards , Esq . , and S. Chisenhale Marsh , Esq . , judges ; E. P. Johnson , Esq . , 9th Lancers , O. W. Bishop , 9th Lancers , and C. H. Colvin , Esq . , clerks of the course ; Mr T. Carr , clerk of the scales .
Mr F. Schmidl was entrusted with the cater ing for the guests on the " ladies ' lawn , " and Mr W. Phipps , of the New Inn , had a booth for the accommodation of the general public . There were several stalls for the sale of fruit , ginger beer , and the like , and swings , roundabouts and knock - em - downs were on the ground , and found many patrons . The sports were characterised with great punctuality , and at a quarter past two the programme was opened by some exhibition performances by members of the Waltham Abbey Athletic Club , the first being
Single Sticks - Mr F. Wraighte v . Mr H. Bailey Some good play was shown by both men , and the countering was admired , the result of the bout being in favour of Bailey .
Boxing Mr M. Salmons v . Mr T. Avis Some excellent boxing was the result of this meet ing , both men being evenly matched ; but in the last round Avis got his man against the ropes and got the best of the " mill " which ensued .
Boxing - Mr C. Knightley v . Mr J. Whiting In this contest , though not so well contested as the former , some good play was shown , Whiting proving himself somewhat superior to his opponent ,
Foils - Mr W. Adams v . Mr F. Wraighte This was a one - sided contest , as Wraight , who has been in the 14th Hussars , was vastly superior to his opponent with the foils , and in the round with the single sticks which concluded their performance he had his man at all points .
Boxing Mr H. Avis v . Mr C. Bird Some fine boxing was witnessed with these two men , the hitting and stopping being very clean and effective , so that at the conclusion of the three rounds it was difficult to say who had proved himself to be the better man with the gloves .
With Mr A. J. Wheeler as M. C. , everything was carried out very satisfactorily , and the various competitors , dressed alike , with new boxing gloves , etc. , presented a very neat appearance .
HURDLE RACE . - 150 yards , over eight flights of hurdles . - Open to the members of the Monkham's and Cheshunt Cricket Clubs .-- 1st prize , £ 3 ; 2nd , £ 1 10s ; 3rd , 10s . Mr Kirby , M. C.C. Mr Packer , M.C.C. Mr Saich , M.C.C. Mr Webster , M.C.C. Mr G. Robson , C.C.C.
Mr H. E. Holford , C.C.C. MrA.J.Edwards , M. C.C. Mr H. Bagot , M.C.C. Mr Want , M.C.C. Mr Norman McLaren , C.C.C.
The eight men were got well together , but before half the distance had been covered McLaren and Want were well to the front , with Kirby in close attendance , Nearing the winning post an exciting race took place between McLaren and Want for premier position , resulting in a dead heat , Want fall ing on the line ; W. Kirby second . After a few minutes ' rest , the two who tied for the first place again went over the course to determine the question of superiority , and McLaren won as he pleased , Want having fallen at one of the hurdles at mid - distance .
ZOOLOGICAL HANDICAP . - A distance handicap , 150 yards . - Prize presented by C. H. Colvin , Esq . Calf Scratch . Mr Wood Jackal J. Surridge Cat 50 yards Major Tait Pig Mr W. Bishop Monkey Mr C. H. Colvin Ferret 70 yards . Miss Colvin Rabbit Mr Colvin Guinea Fowly Mr Ball Goose

Needless to say this race caused much amusement , owing to the comical costumes of some of the riders , fireman , Indians , Egyptians , soldiers , sailors , barris ters , and jockeys being participants in the race . " Dr. Tanner " proved that he could exist over the course and be ( a ) " faster " on " Don Carlos , " and Mr R. B. Colvin , who rode in his uniform as President of the Waltham Abbey Fire Brigade , received an ovation as he passed the post , not a length separating him from " Don Carlos " ; Mr Hereward's " Atalanta , " ridden by Master Brackenbury , was third .

Mouse Mr. A. J. Edwards Tortoise 120 yards . Major Stock Frog Mr F. Britten This unique race caused much excitement and amusement , various conjectures being hazarded as to who came to the post , two , the kangaroo and the goat , how it was to be accomplished . The various animals not coming to the scratch , were handicapped in the way shown above , and were driven by a string held by the
66
person in charge . The various " competitors were reasonably quiet at the post , but at the word go , " when their drivers attempted to drive them to the winning post , a scene of laughable confusion ensued . The mouse set off with a good - lead from the 120 yards distance , and at first made for the winning post ; but the noise and confusion apparently was too much for the diminutive " racer , " and he sought refuge around his driver's legs . The competitors were running here and there , defying all attempts to guide them to the goal , and the ferret , with its natural in stinct , seized an eligible opportunity to tackle the rabbit , which would soon have succumbed to its teeth had they not been promptly separated . The first to pass the post was the pig , followed closely by the calf , the jackal , the goose , and the duck .
THE MONKHAM'S CUP . - A PONY HURDLE RACE For all ponies , 14 hands and under , catch weights over 11 stone , over eight flights of hurdles . - Dis tance about one mile . Mr Wayland's " Midge " .

In place of the performances announced by the Waltham Abbey Athletic Club , by desire , a further exhibition of boxing took place , Messrs . H. Avis and C. Bird , as light weights , and Messrs . T. Avis and M. Salmons , as middle weights , giving a clever exhibition of their skill , but in each case so equal wore the performers that it was difficult to say which was the superior . By permission of the Commanding Officer , the band of the 4th battalion , the Bedfordshire regi . ment , was present , and under the direction of bandmaster McGuire performed a selection of Yellow and black music during the afternoon and evening .

The ponies got off well , but on reaching the hurdles several were unable to keep up the pace . On passing the post the first time , the distance being twice round the course , " Wortleberry " and " Little Tudor " were leading , with " Qui Vive " close up , but after going the whole distance , " Wortleberry " finished first , with " Qui Vive " second , and " Little Tudor " third ; but it was afterwards understood that " Little Tudor was disqualified on account of the jookey , in weighing in being short of weight . DONKEY PILLION RACE . -For School Children , about 300 yards . - 1st prize , 10s ; 2nd , 58 ; 3rd ,
2s 6d .
In this race two boys were seated on each donkey , and resulted in " Dr. Tanner " reaching home first , with Smith and O. Ward ( Leverton School ) up , followed by Thompson and Oleverley ( Board School ) , and E. Thompson and Taylor ( Leverton School ) . UMBRELLA AND CHEROOT RACE . -Saddle pony ,
light choroot , open umbrella , mount , ride round a post , and home . -Distance about quarter - mile .
This race was one which tried the horsemanship of the competitors in a marked degree . The ponies being brought to the scratch were unsaddled , each rider having an umbrella and a cheroot . The word being given the riders saddled their ponies , lighted their cheroots , opened their umbrellas , and mounted . Some of the steeds were very restive while this operation was being gone through , the umbrellas evidently frightening them . Mr Sewell was one of the first to get off , and finished first , followed by Messrs . Yerburgh and Waters .

LANCE V. BUCKET . - Mrs Farnell Watson's prize .
ancient sport of tilting at the ring . Mounted on a . This was a revival in a ludicrous form of the bucket being a piece of wood with a hole in it . The frame was a bucket working on a pivot , below the
bucket was filled with water , and the tilter was driven in a wheelbarrow , the result being that if he and the driver escaped unwetted , but if he struck succeeded in passing the lance through the hole , he the wood , one or both received the contents of the bucket over them . Several tilters tried their skill , receiving the full benefit of the water , but Messrs .
C. H. Colvin and J. S. Calverley , accomplished the feat three times , Messrs . E. W. Webster and Kirby , who did so twice , failing in the third attempt . SACK RACE . - Open to all comers . - Prize 5s . Won by Pomfret .
