UMBALLA AUTUMN MEETING , 1881 .

First Day , Saturday , 22nd October .
Who that has known Umballa in the zenith of its glory could believe that it has fallen so low in the sporting scale as hardly to be able to bring off a moderate meeting with any degree of success .
With a very fair prospectus and a workmanlike body of stewards , a first - rate Secretary and a community of sportsmen , one would not , or should not , take long to work out the demonstration of such a problem . However satisfactory the result may be in theory , in reality it was a failure . Some are of opinion that the cause of this falling - off is due to the sudden collapse of the Derby Sweeps here last year , which used to yield a handsome percentage to the Race Fund , and the Stewards were thus enabled to offer large prizes as stakes , but against this theory . I can advance that the Dehra Meeting and various other meetings throughout the Presidency do not offer larger prizes as added money than has been done this season at Unballa , and so I come back to the point from which I started , viz . , that the Umballa Meeting of 1881 has been a very moderate one . The success of a race meeting is not so much the value of the added money , but the zest given to speculation on the various events by the lotteries held them . If there were no lotteries few or no stables would travel about the country or indeed exist at all . We would have to satisfy our craving for sport with tattoo races at Gymkhanas . To fill up lotteries we require the presence of several punters who are ready to put down any amount of money and take their chances of picking up more or none at all . Well then , very few of the right good sort happened to be at Umbalia , and as and as a matter of consequence owners were in tribulation , as we have seen several scratched their horses rather than run for the mere stakes . This last proceeding is open to two manner of constructions . One by the general public , who invariably as a body are ignorant of all the principles of sport beyond the spectacle afforded by seeing so many horses running with the object of outpacing one another . The other , the more reasonable one , that owners who undertake a very responsible and expensive pursuit of maintaining a racing stud cannot afford to their horses incur penalties and lose their maidens for trifling sums of money , and when no one is pecuniarily benefited .
let
The aspect of affairs up to Friday , the eve of the first day , was gloomy . In spite of the efforts of Colonel Prinsep and Captain Trower not a single stable lottery could be filled , and the ordinary lotteries promised very little better success . Indeed had it not been
opportune
arrival
of
for the a well - known and . popular from Simla , and a couple more supporter of the turf from Lucknow at 10 o'clock that evening , perhaps no lottery would have filled . As it was only two for Rs . 1,000 euch did fill , and the company dispersed , hoping better things for the morrow ; for the Honorary secretary announced that more lotteries would he held at the stand next day after luncheon and before the races . This luncheon is a capital institution and peculiar to . Umballa . A goodly number sat down to the good things set before them , but no good was forth coming to the speculators . By dint of perseverance and touting one lottery paper was filled , making three for the first day's races . The card for the day was shorn of its usual proportions . Only four events appeared on it , and of these one . the Maiden Chase , at the last moment , fell through , and a wretched bazar hack was allowed to walk over for it . Advance and Alien were also entered , but these were withdrawn , as there was no lottery on the race . The native owner of the third horse Baz accepted this nonappearance of his adversaries as a tacit acknowledgment of their unwilingness to contest the event with such an animal as be possessed , and he stalked about the enclosure full of his importance , but he was not suffered to carry off the prize without some little return to the public . One of the Stewards insisted that to qualify for the walk over Baz should jump the water in front of the stand . Accordingly Mahomed Shunker put up his jockey , one of his own progeny . and after a great battle between the horse and rider , as the former tried to buck the other off he fulfilled the required condition and was led away . Baz is a waler horse purchased some two or three years ago by the 9th Lancers as a charger , and as every remedy was tried to cure him of his inveterate habit of buck jumping without avail , he was put up to auction and sold for Rs . 30 to his present owner , a retired jockey of the Walter Gilbert days . The horse is now ridden in native bit which , of it lacerates his mouth , effectually prevents his getting his head down sufficiently to buck .

The first race of the day was the Tom Thumb Stakes , for which seven ponies went down to the post Probably was made first favorite , Eccentric from her Lucknow reputation coming next , and a dark pony called Our Mary Anne standing in the third place of the talents confidence Eccentric most shamefully belied her reputation , but behaved quite in keeping with her name . start for be
By her tricks at the post she delayed the start for half an hour , and then when they got away she was nowhere .
I consider the talent were much at fault in the way they neglected to take account of Haphazard . He is a coming pony , ran ex ceedingly well at Dehra while the shifty Probably is one not to be relied , and Lord William has done well in disposing of him , for he is just such a one as may make or cost his owner a fortune .
Our Mary Anne ran well , and perhaps if she had been piloted by an European may have done better still . No one envied Captain Williams his good fortune , when Haphazard brought his colors to

He is ever eager to back anything , and ready to fill up a lottery paper . His ill fortune on the e turf is becoming proverbial , but it is a long lane that has no turning , and I trust that his fortune may be on the turn .
There is some appearance of this , for his horse O'Kelly won the Derby this day easily , from the favorite Imperial , though it must be added the Nawab , would have been more pleased had there been a lottery on the race . I hear this sportsman has recently made some valuable additions of Australian T. B. stock , and we may hope soon to hear of their coming out well .
The third event was a Scurry , for which four horses came out , two of them belonging to the Nawab . Warrego , another shifty horse , was made favorite , but put his backers into a hole , while Blackthorn , who is much improved on his Dehra form , after getting a bad start , won very comfortably from the Nawab's pair , who ran very well . Imperial's running here in the Derby has been the source of much disappointment to his trainer and backers , but I do not think He ran a rare game one at Dehra , is a the horse is to blame . young animal of a first class stamp , and will yet make his mark on the turf annals . He was kept back at Dehra till the last moment , then after three days on a road journey , and another in the train he was brought on the course and expected to run well . I would back the horse to - morrow , if he was running , for I consider him a staunch one with good substance .

They were delayed considerably at the post owing to Robinson and Eccentric not being able to come to an understanding .
Eventually when the jockey managed to remain in the saddle there were two false starts caused by Robinson and Jaffir trying to get off before the others . As the flag dropped Hecla shot to the front , but was soon pulled back , and the lot ran in a cluster to the distance , when Tingey got Haphazard to the front , and gradually coming away from the others won by two and a half lengths . Alien was scratched early in the day , and the owner of Advance followed suit later on . This left Baz to walk over , which he did by first qualifying in being ridden over the water jump in front of the stand . The native took him over in fair style . considering he was ridden in a severe bit held tight the whole time , and the horse's mouth was full of blood .

The arrival of a small contingent of punters helped materially to improve the aspect of the meeting . On the evening after the first day's races some stable lotteries were held on this day's events , and the racing was something nearer what spectators on the Umballa course are accustomed to .. There were some good lotteries on the events . There was none on the Dessert Stakes , in fact all the horses entered were scratched as none cared to face the redoubtable Jung Bahadoor of Dehra , who walked over for the stakes .
Jung Bahadoor was reared in the Haupper stud ; he has a first - class English pedigree . He is by Lopcatcher , with a double strain of Vol a

of years ago at Meerut , and bought by his present owner and trained under the direction of Mr. A Ghyas of Dehra . Colonel Prinsep's stable is the only novelty to order of things as they prevailed at Dehra . Cozens , however , has not come here , but went on direct to Nusseerabad . There was a very good card put forth for this day , but at the very outset there was a difficulty . For the first event three ponies were entered , but Reveille was scratched early , and Probably and North Star were left to meet each other over the hurdles . As the latter had not left to meet been measured by the Stewards they were asked to see if he passed under the standard before he ran . This the pony failed to do , but after a deal of cutting and paring , his legs were sufficiently reduced by the close of the evening , and the race stands over for the third day . The next event was the Lill putian stables , for which four ponies stripped . With Kex in it there seemed no possible chance for any other . Rs 1,000 lottery Jaffir's pony fetched the long price of Rs . 900 , while the moderate Farez sold for Rs . 180. A good deal of remark waS occasioned by the absurd rule of the C. T. C. , which acquires a winner in jump races to give weight to others in a flat race . In this particular race the absurdity of this rule has been amply illustrated . By the conditions of the race Rex was running , at an advantage of 5lbs . over Farez . Rex has won on the flat , Farez has not yet ; the forms of the two ponies are nothing like near as all must know . Rex of course won in a canter , while the others were not in it . After this attention was directed to the . Grand Annual . How different from the days of old . Five horses paraded for the event , but of these perhaps only three had pretensions to be classed as race horses . Advance was made favorite , while Kate Coventry held second place in the betting . The talent were guided in this by Advance when receiving nearly 2st . from the mare beating her . Now they were meeting on very different terms , and it was a rash proceeding betting against the mare . Dewing rode Lord William's mare in his usual fine style , and led from point to point winning by some lengths . For the Great . Eastern Steeplechase Sherwood was scratched and Southern Cross allowed to walk over .
