On this occasion he Captained the veteran team . Having won the toss , he elected to put his side in . But , through want of practise and an irresistible desire to " slog " Mr. Lambton's en ticing slows , they were soon out for the small score of 41. Mr. Bishop's three catches in suc cession at point ( the one which secured Captain Mackenzie being a really good one ) and Mr. B. Colvin's long - stopping , materially aided Mr. Lamb ton's bringing about this result . Nyom The young ones , represented by their Captain , Mr. Lambton , and Brownlow , commenced well , and quick scoring was at once the order of the day the former hitting freely but safely , and the latter playing well and carefully . A change in the bowling , however , soon secured Mr. Lambton , and his partner also , soon after , following him to the tent , no further stand was made against the bowling , except by Mr. Riddell , who played well for his 21 , until neatly caught and bowled by Plowden . The extras amounted to the not creditable figure of 20 . After lunch , Mr. Scott and Dr. Linton , on behalf of the old boys , faced the bowling of Lambton and Riddell . The former by good hard hitting , and the latter by steady play , made the game from the outset a more merry one than ha d been the case in the first innings . A well de livered ball , however , at length displaced Mr. Scott's stumps , who retired for a well made 31 , and was succeeded by Mackenzie , who scored 17 in good style before he succumbed to one from Riddell not to be denied . Kingscote followed and kept the field alive by some grand hitting , being for a time well aided by a brother gunner , Captain Mansel . When , however , the latter's wicket fell for 15 , no more scoring ensued , and Kingscote carried out his bat for 64 , finely and quickly put together , without a chance . The long stopping was as successful in this as in the former innings . The Under Thirties now again went in , having 73 to make to win . When time was called , they Mr. Nemo absent had run up 47 runs for 4 wickets . Mr. Riddell , Koee Nahin , Esq . a formidable opponent , having been well thrown Byes out , at the far wicket , by Kingscote , before he could score . The victory thus remained with the little boys , in the first innings . in the annals of cricket , we are in a position to Byes , & c . assure Messrs . Lilly white that they were both most successfully accomplished in this match . The running powers of this gentleman , between amusing and added much to the hilarity of a by the wickets , if not equally successful were equally no means melancholy game . but the hospitable hosts of our opening day , who It is proposed to have a match every Thursday ; leave us for Umballa , and yet more distant lands , on Sunday , will be much missed and not easily replaced . The " Bombay Duck , " too , about that sametime , wings his flight elsewhere , much to the regret of numerous sportsmen . Capt . H. M. Mackenzie , 9th B.C. ct . Bishop b Over Thirty .
