Capt . Grenfell arrived home late in September , having been wounded when saving the guns of the 119th Battery R.F.A. for which gallant action he was awarded the V.C. Before his wound was properly healed he returned to France and rejoined the Regiment , but was himself killed soon afterwards .
After Charlie's death Mr. Vaughan , a House Master at Eton , wrote to his father - " He was one of the best , simple " determined , courageous . He " showed the same pluck and dash in the charge of the IX " Lancers as he did in boxing in the Gymnasium at Eton . Eton " is proud of him and he will have a place on her roll of im " mortal deeds " . In one of the " Eton Chronicle's " obituary notices it speaks of him as " Ever the true st and staunchest of " boys , he was true and staunch to the end . "
A brass tablet was put up in the ante chapel at Eton by his father to his memory , on which there is engraved the family coat of arms , and an inscription in Latin eulogizing his courage and constancy and telling how he was faithful unto
death .
His name is also to be found among those of more than 1100 Etonians who fell in the Great War , on the wall of the corridor just inside the courtyard of the Upper Chapel . It appears again on the window of the little chapel within the Upper Chapel which is specially dedicated to the memory of those who fell in the War . His name printed in gold letters is also in the book of remembrance kept in this little dedicatory chapel in which the names of all the killed are thus written .
Mr. Churchill wrote of a visit paid by him to Stone House
