and from that time all his holidays were spent with him in visit ing not only his father's friends , but also at the houses of his own friends made at school and later at Sandhurst . At the age of seventeen he went to Germany for six months At the to learn the language and carry on his studies there . end of that time he entered for Sandhurst passing in fourth from the top and first on the list for cavalry . At Sandhurst he was able to keep a horse and now and then had a day's hunting when he could get leave . Here too as at school , he made hosts of friends , but was never in the least spoiled in spite of the rather unusual life for a boy of con stant visiting in the vacation , at large places where he had the best of everything and was much made of both for his own sake and his father's . On one occasion , while still a Sandhurst Cadet , he stayed with his father in a house in which Lord Roberts also was a guest . The veteran soldier took a great fancy to him and told his father what a promising young soldier he considered he would make . Charlie was gazetted to the IX Lancers in February 1913 and joined the regiment at Tidworth Camp . He very soon became most popular and it was not long indeed before he was beloved by all his brother officers , by whom he was always called " Charles " . His eighteen months with the regiment were ideally happy , and he always said it all far exceeded his expectations . He kept four horses and a polo pony , rode races and played polo to his heart's content . With Capt . Francis Grenfell and other officers of the regiment he rented some shooting , and had alto gether a thoroughly happy time . He never , however , neglected his work for his amusements , indeed he was most studious and soon after joining the regiment went up for the German Interpretership examina tion which he succeeded in passing . In the Regiment Charlie had a great reputation as a boxer . |
