sterling qualities . His last report on leaving Stone House for Eton says , " He is a thoroughly conscientious little boy with plenty of character . There is a determination and dogge dness about him that are an example to us all , and he is everyone's friend . Everyone who had ever had anything to do with him loved him . He was clever and amusing , excellent company and a thoroughly good all round young sportsman . He was a most affectionate and loving son and there was perfect understanding between him and his father , so much so that even to the very last he used to tell him everything and there was complete con fidence between them . In this way he rewarded his father for his wonderful tenderness and love , for he had indeed been to him mother and father in one from the time he was seven years old . Charlie's letters to his father were most loving and affectionate and he always wrote to him as " Darling Daddy " to the very end . After his first year at Eton , his father retired from Egypt |
