IMPRESSIVE SCENE .
The tragedy of Ireland was brought home to the quaint South Devon village of Lod diswell yesterday , when Captain Roger Grenville Peek , of the 9th Lancers , who was killed in an ambush in county Ros common early last Wednesday morning , was buried in the little churchyard there .
Captain Peek ws a member of a family that has lived in Devon for generations , being the younger son of the lato Sir Cuthbert Peek and the Dowager Lady Peek , formerly of Rotsdon . Though only 30 years of age he sored as an officer with the 9th Lancers for over 10 years , and had a distingu sned career . He went with them to South frica , and in 1914 be crossed
to Franco with the Expeditionary Force , being taken pri oner during the historic retreat from Mons three weeks later . After he was released he became A.D.C. to Field Marshal Sir William Robertson in 1918 , aud some time ago went with his squadron to Ireland .
In January , 1919 , he was married to the Hon . Joan Penelope Sclater - Booth , eider daughter of the late Lord and Lady Basing , who , with two young children , sur vive him . He was immensely popular amongst his brother officers , as well as with the non - commissioned oficers and troopers , many of them describing him as the finest efficer in the regiment .

TROOP OF LANCERS PRESENT . The body was brought from Ireland to home at Hazlewood , Loddiswell , on Saturday , and it remained in the school room on the estate there until yesterday , when it was laid to rest with full military honours . The display was an imposing

one and full of dignity . From the house to the church the coffin , draped with the Union Jack and covered with Captam Peek's cap and sword and the family wreaths , was surmounted on a gun carriage drawn by six artillery horses , and preceding it were a troop of the 9th Lancers on foot . Six of these , in charge of Major J. Kemple and Sgt . - Major A. E. Tyte , were from his own squadron in Ireland , and they
acted
as bearers , whilst the remainder came from the regimental depôt at Tidworth , Salisbury
Plain .
Lances , with pennants flying , and rifles were carried at the reverse until the church was reached , and here the troop , resting on their reversed arms , were formed into two files through which the coffin was carried . Following it was Lt. - Col . Cavendish , 9th Lancers , the principal military mourner , and after him came the members of the family and other mourners - the Hon . Mrs. Peek ( widow ) , the Dowager Lady Peek and mother ) , Mr. Mrs. P. Williams [ brother - in - law and sister ) , Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Benyon ( brother - in - law and sister ) , Lt. Com . and Mrs. Dalrymple Hamilton ( brother - in - law and sister ) , Miss K. Peek ( sister ) , Sir Wilfred Peek ( brother ) , Lord and Lady Midleton , the Hon . Lady White head , the Hon . Mrs. Gell , Lord Basing , General Sclater - Booth , Lord Cottesloe , Sir John and Miss Shelley , and the Hon . Arthur Brodrick .

THE SERVICE . The service , which was fully choral , was conducted by the Bishop of Glasgow ( Dr. Campbell ) , who was assisted by Rev. W. Hodges ( vicar of Loddiswell ) , Rev. J. H. H. Copleston ( rector of Widworthy ) , and Rev. J. F. Starforth ( vicar of Axmouth ) . bymns " For all the saints , " " The King of love , " and " On the resurrection morning were sung with feeling , and the organist , Mr. J. Cranch , played " O rest in the Lord " and the Dead March in " Saul . "

The grave had been lined with moss , daffodils , primroses , magnolias , and lilies by the gardeners at Hazlewood and at . Wid worthy Court , the residence of the Dowager Lady Peek , and despite a terrific hailstorm it was surrounded by several hundred people
whilst the Bishop read the commital sentences . Then three volleys were fired over the grave by 14 of the Lancers , followed iby " Last Post " and the triumphant notes of the " Reveille , " which were counded by four trumpeters from the 4th Dragoon Guards , the officers standing at the salute and the men rigidly at attention .
