The Scramogue Ambush . Captain Peek's Funeral .
Further Details .
The " Independent " says - The officer killed in the Strokestown ambush was Captain O Grenville Peek , not Captain Sir Wilfred Peek , Bart , DSO ( Lord Midleton's nephew ) , as at first reported . The name of the other officer dead is given as Lieut Tennant . A military 1uiry at Athlone found that Driver John Keenan , RASO , the third victim , was wilfully murdered by some person or persons unknown , and that from the appearance of his wounds and the wounds of other soldiers , explosive or dum - dum bullets were used . One of the wounded soldiers described how , at 7 am , at a bend in the Longford road , two miles irom Strokestown , the Orown forces , travelling in a Crossley car , were fired upon from a house near by . The driver was hit and shut off his engine , the car stopping shortly after . Witness and others got out on the road . He was busy firing his gun and did not see much more . He was wounded in the arm and face . Shortly afterwards witness heard voices ordering the RIO constables into the house . The men then came out and burned the car . They took away the rifles and kits . A RAMO dootor said Driver Keenan had a large gaping wound in the abdomen .
CAPTAIN PEEK'S FUNERAL .
The remains of Captain Peek and Lieutenant Tennant , both of the 9th Lancers , were removed from the Upper Military Barracks , Longford , in the afternoon of Good Friday , and conveyed to St John's Church , where a Memorial Service , conducted by the Rector , Rev Mr Justios , took place in the pre sence of a large congregation . The coffins were draped with Union Jacks , and the funeral after wards to the railway station was one of the most impressive spectacles witnessed in Longford for a long time . All the houses in the town were closed . The band of the 9th Lancers headed the procession . The officers of the regiment followed the tenders on which were the remains . Next came the cavalry , a detachment of the Auxiliary Police , a large body of Royal Irish Constabulary , under command of Co Inspector Richardson and District Inspector Hawkins , and a strong party of the Comrades of the Great War , and large numbers of the townspeople . The remains were taken by the 7 30 pm train to Dublin , and from thence to England .
CAPTAIN PEEK'S SERVICE IN THE ARMY
