According to the official report , the party consisted of Lancers and police , and num bered nine . About forty attackers fired point - blank as the car approached the bend , killing the officer and the military driver and wounding four others . attackers destroyed the car and took away two unwounded policemen . police captured two armed civilians .

Overwhelmed in Irish Ambush CAPTAIN KILLED
Uncle Hears News in the House of Lords
The cutting - up of a party of the 9th Lancers is the most sensational item of yesterday's Irish war news . The party , which comprised six Lancers and three police , was proceed ing in a motor - lorry yesterday from Strokestown to Longford for rations , when it fell into an ambush prepared by a Republican force whose number is put at 200 .
It was Ioriginally reported that Cap tain Peak Lieutenant was killed . Tenant seriously wounded , but an offi cial account states that one officer and the driver of the car were killed , and four soldiers and one policeman wounded . Jar
The attackers destroyed the car aud took away with them two policemen .
Captain Peak , the DAILY HERALD learns , was a nephew of Lord Midle ton , who heard the news of his kins man's fate in the . House of Lords in the afternoon .
Lord Midleton was the leader of the Southern Unionist critics of the Home Rule Act in the Lords last session .
