Loustad Independant , On Good Friday the remains of Capt . R. G. Poek and Lieut . J. H. A. Tennant were sent away for interment in England . These officers were killed in an ambush on the road between Strokestown and Long ford on the previous Wednesday morning . On their way to the train the remains of these two officers were brought into the Church and a short , but very touching Service was held in the presence of a very large congregation of soldiers , police and civilians . There was a very general feel ing of sorrow for their death , as the officers of the 9th Lancers have been very popular with all classes during their stay in Long ford . Irish Independant , Dean's Tribute to Dead Officer . At Strokestown , the Rt . Rev. Dean Gearty , P.P. , made sympathetic references to the late Capt . Sir F. Peak , who was killed in an ambush . The dead officer , Dean Gearty said , was one of the best friends the town possessed , and he knew all deplored his untimely end . While the people of Ireland were sorely tried , he ad vised them to be patient , and place their trust in God . 2.4 1.4 ditto THE CO ROSCOMMON AMBUSH FUNERALS FROM LONGFORD OF THE VICTIMS . The funeral of Capt R Grenville Peek , D.S.O , and Tenant , both of 9th Lancers . who were killed in the ambush near Strokes town , were removed from the military barracks , Longford , to St John's Church , where a Memorial Service was conducted by Rey Henry Justice , rector . The coffins , draped with the Union Jack , were after , wards removed to the railway station , and were accorded - full military honours . The band of the 9th Lancers headed the cortege , which included detachments of the regiment as well as of the Auxiliaries , the RIC , and the Comrades of the Great war . The remains were conveyed by the 3 36 p.m. train to Dublin , on route for England . During the passage of the funeral all shops were closed . Capt Peek will be interred at Loddiswell Church Devon Lieut Tenant who was only 22 was well known in Longford particularly in sporting circles He was a member of the coursing and other clubs in the district , The remains of Driver John Keenan , RASC , killed in the Strokestown ambush , were removed from Athlone to Glasgow on Monday . The coffin was draped with the Union Jack , and was accompanied to the station by detachments of troops , headed by a military band . FUNERALS OF VICTIMS . The funeral of Capt Roger Grenville Peek , 9th Lancers , killed in the Strokestown ambush , took place at Loddiswell , South Devon , with full military honours Troopers of the 9th Lancers attended , and trumpeters of the 4th Dragoon Guards sounded the " Last Post ' and " Reveille " over the grave . The Bishop of Glasgow and local clergymen conducted the service . Amongst those present were - Sir Wilfred Peek , the Earl and Countess of Midleton , the Hon Authur Brodirick , Lord Cottesloe , Sir John Shelly , Lord Basing , the Hon Lady Whitehead and Brig - Gen the Hon W D Selater Booth The funeral of Capt William Good , Barryshall , Timoleague , shot dead at Bally cotton on Saturday . took place to the cemetery attached to the Protestant church , Clonakilty Three weeks ago his father , Mr John Good , also shot dead , was interred in the same ground The remains of Sergeant John Coughlan , killed in the ambnsh near Westport were interred in St Colman's Cemetery Ballagh aderreen . The funerals of the two officers of the Lancers killed in the Scramogue ambush took place from the Military Barracks to the Railway Station at 3 p.m. on Good Friday , the remains being removed by the limited mail for interment in England A large force of the Lancers and Aux iliary R.I.C. marched in the procession with arms reversed , the band of the Re giment playing the funeral mach at the head of the procession . A large num ber of civilians also accompanied the funeral Western Times 1.4 FUNERAL OF CAPT . PEEK Buried With Full Military Honours at Loddiswell The funeral of Captain Roger Grenville Peek , 9th Lancers , younger son of the late Sir Cuthbert Peek , Bt . , and of the Hon . Lady Peek , who was killed in ambush in County Roscommon last Wednesday , took place at Loddiswell on Tuesday afternoon , with full military honours . A troop of the 9th Lancers attended , and six men from Captain Peek's own squadron , along with his batman , acted as bearers . Trumpeters of the 4th Dragoon Guards sounded the " Last Post " and " Reveille " over the grave . The Bishop of Glasgow , assisted by Rev. W. Hodges ( Vicar ) , Rev. J. H. H. Copleston ( Rector of Offwell ) and Rev. J. F. Starforth ( Vicar of Axmouth ) , conducted the service . As the cortege entered the church the organist ( Mr. J. Crouch ) played " O rest in the Lord , " and later the Dead March from " Saul . " The hymns sung were " For all the Saints , " " The King of love my shepherd , " and " On the Resurrection Morn , " while the 90th Psalm was chanted . The mourners were the Hon . Mrs Peek ( widow ) , the Hon . Lady Peek ( mother ) , Sir Wilfrid Peek ( brother ) , Lieutenant - Colonel and Mrs. Hamilton ( brother - in - law and sister ) , Mr. and Mrs. Benyon ( brother - in - law and sister ) , Miss K. Peek ( sister ) , Lord Basing ( brother - in - law ) , Capt . A. Bell ( brother - in - law ) , Col. Slater Booth ( unele ) , Lord Cottesloe , Lord and Lady Midlteon , the Hon . Lady Whitehead , Sir John and Miss Shelley , Colonel the Hon . Arthur Brodrick , Major J. F. Shelley , Mr. and Mrs. P. F. C. Williams , Lieut . R. Shelley , R.N. , Mr. L. The grave was lined with moss , daffodils , prim roses , magnolias , and lilies , arranged by the gardeners from Widworthy Court ( Lady Peek's residence ) and from Hazelwood ( residence of deceased ) . There were a large number of handsome wreaths . |
