THE CHARGE OF THE XII ROYAL LANCERS NEAR MOY .
" 1
On 28th August , 1914 , the 12th Royal Lancers were in Brigade Reserve in the Chateau grounds at Moy on the River Oise . Horses and men were resting . At about 4 o'clock in the after noon , a sudden outburst of firing was heard . The Colonel of the Regiment immediately ordered the saddle up . " In four minutes " C " Squadron , commanded by Captain J. C. Mitchell , was filing out of the park , closely followed by the M.G. Section and the other two Squadrons . In getting into the open country a Squadron of Enemy Cavalry was seen moving down some high ground , who , on seeing our leading Squadron , retired to the crest line and came into dismounted action . " C " Squadron at once engaged the enemy dismounted , whilst " A " and " B Squadrons , working round the flank , came into dismounted action on the enemy's left flank . " C " Squadron then mounted and , led by Lieut . - Colonel F. Wormald through the dead ground which concealed them from the enemy , they suddenly burst into view of the astounded Germans , and charging across the open for 100 yards they rode through the enemy three times . The dismounted German troopers fought gallantly , but all were killed save three who were found lying in some roots , shamming dead . 70 officers and men of the 2nd ( Queen Victoria's Own ) Dragoons of the Guard lay dead . Our own casualties were small , but included the gallant Commander of " C " Squadron killed and the Colonel of the Regiment wounded .
