( 12th Lancers , 8 goals ; 9th Lancers , 6. ) Although the third round tie of the Inter - Regimental Tournament between the 12th and 9th Lancers was decided in sultry weather at Ranelagh yesterday , the players did not spare themselves , and the pace was very fast throughout . In the third period the captain of the 12th Lancers ' team , Mr. B. G. Nicholas , had the misfortune to dislocate his shoulder , and had to retire , his place being taken by Mr. Eden . The latter proved a good substitute , but his coming into the side caused its rearrangement , and otherwise the 12th Lancers would , doubtless , have won by a wider margin . Their team work was perfect , and in their hitting they were much more certain than their opponents . Captain Badger - first at No. 2 , and then as leader at No. 3 - played a great game , and the other members of the side rendered valuable assistance . For a player of his rating Captain Porter did exceptionally well for the 9th Lancers , and Mr. Phipps - Hornby was more than useful , but neither Captain Edwards nor Captain Grenfell was up to his usual form , although each did clever things occasionally . The principal factor in the 9th Lancers ' defeat was their lack of cohesion , which is to be accounted for by the fact that they have not had much practice together .
When the accident happened to Mr. Nicholas the 12th Lancers were leading by three goals to one , and that score represents accurately the general run of the exchanges up to that point , the 9th Lancers being mainly engaged in defending . Captain Badger , Mr. Nicholas , and Mr. Leatham had put through for their side , while Mr. Hornby , following a good run by Captain Grenfell , had found the mark for the 9th . The latter then set up a series of smart attacks , and with two more points by Mr. Hornby they placed themselves on terms in the middle of the fourth stage . Play , however , then veered round again , and by the time that the period ended the 12th had established a superiority of six goals to three , Mr. Eden , Mr. Wyndham - Quin , and Captain Badger having brought off good shots in the meantime . Afterwards the 12th always held their advantage , and at the finish won as stated . Both of their additional goals were recorded by Mr. Wyndham - Quin , while Captain Grenfell , Mr. Hornby , and Captain Porter increased the score of the 9th . Teams :

This tie in the Army championship , which was brought off at Ranelagh yesterday , had been looked fcrward to with much interest , The 12th Lancers were generally expected to win , but the 9th were known to be capable of giving them a very hard fight . The quality of the polo did not fall below expectations . The pace was tremendously fast all bi : rough , and the hitting was good on both sides , but particularly 30 with the 12th Lancers , who seem to be almost stick - perfect
It was a game of remarkable fluctuations . The 12th were leading by 3 goals to 1 in the third period , when Mr. Nicholas had the misfortune to dislocate his left shoulder - blade and had to retire . Mr. J. Eden came out as substitute , and the team was reorganised , Mr. Wyndham Quin going to No. 2 and the new . comer to back . The effect of the change was quickly apparent . The 9th equalised , and were then ex pected to win , but their opponents made a wonderfu recovery , and at the end of the fourth period were leading by 6 goals to 8. The 9th were by no means do with , and stoutly contested every yard of the way in the last three poriods . The 12th were rather botter served by their ponics , and this advantage onabled them to maintain their lead ratil the end . Captain Parter played a very sound gamo for the losers . The others did well all round , and deserve much credit for their success after losing one of their
best men .

INTER - REGIMENTAL TOURNAMENT . 12th LANCERS 8 , 9th LANCERS 6 . The 12th Lancers did very well to win this match at Ranelagh yesterday . In all their previous matches this season they have shown good form , and in the ordinary course of events they would probably have won yesterday very easily indeed . They began much better than their opponents , and early in the third period led by three goals to one . Then in some unac countable way Nicholas , their No. 3 and best player , dislocated his left shoulder , and had to retire . In his place J. Eden was brought out , and played at back . Wyndham - Quinn .went up
to No. 2 , while Capt Badger went to No. 3 . It took some time for the team to settle down in this order , and they led by only one goal at the end of the period , the score being three goals to two . Early in the fourth chukker the 9th Lancers drew level at three goals . The 12th Lancers then began to get together . Wyndham - Quinn seemed better suited at No.2 than he did at back , and was seen to greater advantage than in any previous match this season . Eden , too , was very safe at back , and although he did not hit a very long ball he was always there , and very very wiry ball he was always there , and very sound in defence . Before the end of the next period the 12th Lancers had established a useful lead of six goals to three , Badger ( 2 ) and Wynd ham Quinn having hit goals .
During the fifth period the 9th attacked strongly , but met with a very stubborn defence . Capt Grenfell finally made a nice goal after good play by Phipps Hornby , but before the end of the chukker the 12th had added to their lead at 7 points to 4. There was no score in the sixth period , during which the 9th had much the bet ter of the game . Capt Edwards once had very bad luck with a long hit . The last eight minutes was closely contested and at a very fast pace . The 12th Lancers fully held their own , and each side scoring once they won by eight goals to six . The winners were by far the better team as a team , and it was to this that they owed their victory . Individually they were not the stronger side . They rode with sounder judgment , and nearly always came up on the right side of the ball . They passed remarkably well . The 9th Lancers were all somewhat off colour except Capt Porter , who played a very sound game . The winners , if they have Nicholas back in time , should be very hard to beat in the final ties of this tournament . Even in the absence of Nicholas they must still stand a chance . Teams : 12 LANCERS : E. H. Leatham , R. Wynd ham - Quinn , Capt T. R. Badger , and J. Eden ( B. G. Nicholas ) .
19th LANCERS : G. Phipps - Hornby , Capt F. Grenfell , Capt J. G. Porter , and Capt A. W. Edwards .
