GLOOMY WEATHER AT PENTON .
Postponed for a fortnight on account of the inclement conditions , the weather on Monday was worse than ever for the holding of the 9th Lancers point - to - point steeplechases over Capt . F. R. Sutton's course at Penton . Still the fixture was fulfilled , rain pouring most of the time the five races were in progress . This year Capt . Sutton had marked out a different course , with the apparent object of giving the sightseers a better and more complete view of the running . The course was a little longer if anything , ex ceedingly heavy , with the turf saturated like a sponge , while much of the distance along by Foxcotte was flooded . Fortunately there were no bad accidents .
The officials were : -Stewards : Lieut . - Col . D. G. M. Campbell , Major Beale Browne , O. C. H. Riley , Esq . , M.F.H. , Capt . Grenfell ; judge : General H. De B. De Lisle , C.B. , D.S.O .; starter Capt . F. R. Sutton ; clerk of the scales : Capt . Kemple ; hon . sec .: Capt . J. G. Porter ; and the results were :

Coming into the Penton - Foxcotte coun try , Red Pepper was still at the head of affairs , but Goblin was rapidly closing up ; this was short lived though , for he went head over heels in the ford and gave Mr. Phipps Hornby a good ducking , Wild Rose beating Red Pepper in the run home up the slope . Three lengths divided Wild Rose and Peacock , Prince being a bad third .
