The next item was the officers ' contest , heavy - weights ( tch weights ) , open to officers of the Army and Navy . Only two competed - Lieut . R. J. C. Thompson , R.A.M.C. , and Lieut . J. Porter , 9th Lan Thompson is a big man with a long reach , and Porter , in comparison , a little man , and it is doubtful whether he scales heavy - weight dimensions . In the first round Thompson kept his opponent off , and Porter was tempting him to open out , but the three minutes resulted only in give - and - take work . In the second round Porter hustled his opponent , and although Thompson got in swing up - handed lefts on to the face , Por ter played into Thompson's ribs , and got an effect on the wind . It was cheeky fighting , but it told . In the third round Porter ( the " little man , ' as they called him ) went ding - dong into the fight with tricky movements and rapid , heavy blows , and although Thompson tried to keep him off , he got under the other man's reach into his guard and forced the fight . At the call of time he was popularly declared the winner . 5 / 01 / -3 . at 6.3 + 13.5

PWDIATION
Sth africa L'Although the heavy - weight competition for officers was not the first event , it can be placed here not inconvenient on ac count of the fact that it was decided at once . There were only two entries . The contestants were Lient . R. J. C. Thomp son , R.A.M.C. ( the holder of the title ) , and Lieut . J. Porter , of the 9th Lancers . The weights of these gentlemen were not announced , but judging from their ap pearance I should be inclined to think that Porter was giving away about a stone and a half at the least . Thompson , too , was much the taller man , and further had the The contest longer reach of the two . went the three rounds , during which the Lancers officer from the displayed a greater knowledge of the science of the game . He was more pliable , as it were , and his exchanges more rapid , and his blows better directed . Thompson appeared
to be too fleshy . Apart from that , how ever , he was ponderous . No doubt , had he got home once his opponent would have been counted out , but Porter was too agile to allow this . From the start He led to the finish Porter attacked . smartly and neatly with his left , and occa sionally landed heavily with his right on the big man's short ribs . Both men paid too much attention to the head and too little to the body . When they did get to close quarters there was not much to choose between them . Anyhow , neither was hurt , and at the gong they were both fairly fresh . The referee ( Mr. Bennett ) awarded the verdict in favour of Lieut . Porter , a decision which was as popular as it was fair , "

This was the first and final contest in this weight for officers . The contestants were Lient . R. J. C. Thompson , R.A.M.C. , and Lieut . J. Porter , 9th Lancers . These gentlemen were unevenly matched . Lieut , Thompson was the taller and much the heavier of the two . But he was ponderous in action . On the other the Lancers ' favourite dis played a real style , and had a useful left . Mr. Thompson was obviously carrying too much flesh , which was exceedingly awkward for him when Mr. Porter found his " mark . " There were a few rapid exchanges , in which Mr. Penter came out best . In the last round both tried hard , but the big man could not make up leeway , and Mr. Porter gained a deservedly popular win . WEIHTS .
