There a large gathering of visitors . The last tie of the Subalteras ' Cup Tournament of best traditions the produced a game worthy of regimental polo . In the course of the encounter , which was resolutely fought out to the end , the fortunes of the sides fluctuated , and there was a stirring finish . On the general run of the play the Lancers deserved to win . Of the attacking they did slightly more than the Hussars . Still , both teams were to be congratulated on putting up such a splendid game . The Lancers No. 1 had to take the re the field with an injured leg , with ad the same to he that sult vantage as in the Inter - Regimental Tournament , but Mr. Edwards and Mr. Phipps - Hornby were in excellent form . All the members of the losing side played well , especially Mr. Soames , who appears to have a great future before him . Each team hit one goal during the opening period , the strikers being Mr. Darling and Mr. Edwards , and honours were again easy at the second interval at three all . In the meantime Mr. Edwards and Mr. Hornby had put through for the Lancers , while Mr. Mangles had twice found the mark for the opposition . Then the Hussars , with points by Mr. Soames and Mr. Mangles , advanced the score in their favour to 5-3 , but the Lancers claimed the next three goals , which were obtained by Mr. Hornby and Mr. stroke , Mr. Porter , with neareide Edwards , the latter sending between the posts with a A suc lofty drive , and the position was reversed . cessful attack by the Hussars followed , Mr. Darling bringing off a good hit under his pony , and once again the teams were level , the board at that point denoting seven goals all . Halfway through the final period Mr. Hornby gave the Lancers what proved to be the winning goal , and a great game thus resulted in a narrow win for his side , General Allenby gave away the gold Challenge Cup and the smaller replicas . The cup for the best trained pony in the final teams was secured for Mr. Mangles by his excel lent mount Twilight . Teams :

WINNERS OF THE HUNT AND SUBALTERNS CUPS .
The final ties in the competitions for the Sub altorns Cup and the Hunt Challenge Cup were decided at Ranelagh yesterday before a large and fashionable attendance . The Subalterns Cup was won by the 9th Lancers by eight goals to seven scored by the 20th Hussars . The Pytchley B team secured the Hunt Cup , easily beating Fernies by eight goals to two . The sides in the Subalterns Cup were as fol lows :
9TH LANCERS . - R . C. Benson , No. 1 ; G. H. Phipps Hornby , No. 2 ; A. N. Edwards , No. 3 ; J. G. Porter , back .
20TH HUSSARS . - J . G. Darling , No. 1 ; C. G. Mangles , No. 2 ; S. Barne , No. 3 ; and H. M. Soames , back .
Seven periods of eight minutes each were played on a ground that was on the slow side . There was plenty of hard hitting , but the ball travelled badly , and mis - hits were frequent . The 9th had in Edwards th most brilliant player in the match , and it was to him chiefly that the victory was due . Some of his strokes under his pony and across his pony's forelegs were really wonderful . He was ably supported by Porter at back , who , although he was rather badly shaken by a fall in the sixth period , played a very consistent and sound game . The work of the 20th Hussars was exceedingly
promising . Their outstanding player was
At the end of the first period the score was one all . Both sides scored twice in the next period . In the third period the 20th showed much improved form , and , scoring twice to no reply , established a useful lead . Each side hit one goal in the fourth period . The 9th took the lead early in the fifth period , Edwards scoring a brilliant goal . The 20th drew level just before the bell , and the last period was thus begun with the score at seven goals each . The 9th , However , were now playing slightly the better game , and , scoring the only goal in the final chukker , deservedly won .

Subalterns ' Cup Final .
9TH LANCERS , EIGHT GOALS ; 20TH HUSSARS , SEVEN GOALS , the players being - 9th Lancers : Mr R. L. Benson , Mr G. H. Phipps - Hornby , Mr A. N. Edwards , and Mr J. G. Porter ( back ) ; 20th Hussars : Mr J. C. Darling , Mr C. G. Mangles , Mr S. Barne , and Mr H. M. Soames ( back ) , and the umpire Capt . T. E. Bayley . The final of this tournament was the first match played on the old ground on Saturday , and it proved to be one of the best games of the season . The teams were evenly matched , and the struggle was keen from beginning to end . The Lancers had been generally expected to win , but the others proved to be an extremely consistent side , good at every position , and it was not until a few minutes from the end that the Lancers secured the deciding goal . It is possible that the winners would have scored two or three more goals if their No. 1 had been at his best . Unfortunately , Mr Benson was suffering from a damaged leg , which handicapped him severely when it came to riding off the opposing back . It so happened , too , that My Soames was in great form , and it was a pity that Mr Benson was unable to tackle him fairly owing to the injured limb . In previous matches this season the Lancers ' No. i has been a very sure goal - hitter , and he has been marked as one of the most promising of the younger school of army players . In this match , however , he was unable to score . Edwards was not quite so brilliant as usual , but he did a great Mr Noel deal of effective work at every stage of the game . He is one of those players who are in no sense showy , yet are always working hard in making effective openings or good defensive efforts . Mr J. G. Porter was consistently sound at back in spite of the dashing attack opposed to him . He took rather a heavy fall in the sixth period , but fortunately was uninjured . Mr Phipps - Hornby also did well for the winners , and is a decided acquisition to the polo strength of the 9th Lancers . For the losers Mr Mangles and Mr Soames were most conspicuous , but Mr Darling and Mr Barne were little behind them , and all four players show exceptional promise . In the first period Mr Darling made a run half the length of the field , and scored the opening goal . Then the 9th assumed the offensive , and Mr Edwards , finding himself with a sitter at close range , scored for the Lancers . There was plenty of scoring in the second period , first Mr Edwards hit through with a near side shot , and Mr Mangles equalised . Mr Phipps - Hornby got on to the ball when it was thrown in by the umpire , and galloped away to put the Lancers ahead again . Then just before the change of ponies Mr Mangles made the score three all . The third period went in favour of the Hussars , and goals by Mr Soames and Mr Mangles gave their team a useful advantage . The fourth stage was marked by much hard galloping and good hitting , Mr Porter and Mr Barne scoring for their respective sides . The Lancers were still two goals to the bad when the fifth period started , but they had the better of this stage , and succeeded in equalising , Mr Phipps Hornby and Mr Porter being the scorers . In the next period Mr Edwards made a magnificent shot at goal from long range , the ball going high between the posts , but this effort was nullified soon afterwards by Mr Darling scoring with a clever stroke under his pony . The board showed seven goals all at the beginning of the concluding period , and it was a most exciting struggle for the mastery . Mr Phipps - Hornby hit through with a backhander four minutes from the close , and nothing further was scored , the Lancers thus narrowly retaining their title of the champion subaltern team . This year a new challenge cup was presented to the Ranelagh Club for the tournament in the form of a gold cup copied from the famous Henry VII . Cup in the British Museum . This , together with four silver replicas for the members of the winning team , was presented after the match by Major - Gen . Allenby , Inspector of Cavalry . A happy idea was to give another replica of the cup for the best trained pony in the final teams . The judges of this were Mr W. S. Buckmaster , Major P. D. Fitzgerald , and Capt . L. C. D. Jenner , who selected five ponies for the final trial , and gave their award to Mr Mangles's Twilight .

Oldrey , and Lord Stalbridge ( back ) -and Tidworth , the latter , a military side , winning a splendid game by four goals to three . Next the Blackmore Vale team ( 18 points ) and the Wanderers ( 17 points ) tried conclusions , the latter side , made up of Count Pierre de Quinsonae , Mr L. de Las Casas , Mr E Targett , and Capt N. L. Learmonth ( back ) , being narrowly defeated , after a great fight , by four goals to three .
This left the Blackmore Vale team and Tidworth to contest the final , the latter side having an advan tage of two points on the handicap . The game was played yesterday in wretched weather , rain falling without intermission . Considering the state of the turf the play was good , and the finish most exciting , Tidworth only just winning by four to three . to the weather the Handicap Tournament , which was Owing to have been played during the latter half of the week , had to be abandoned , Tenme :
