MAJOR SCOTT CHISHOLME , 9th Lancers , Honorary Secretary , Third Meeting , Thursday , 23rd August 1883 . Though the card was a small one the sport provided made full re compense for this . The gallant 9th Lancers and the sporting community of Umballa thoroughly understand the secret of bringing off anything they set their hearts on with éclat . The meeting to - day was in every way a perfect success . First of all there was a large attendance . The fair sex mustered very strong and took a great interest in the business of the day . Their kindly appreciation lent an additional zest to the com petition . The splendid Band of the 9th Lancers was present and played some choice music in the intervals of the legitimate business . I should explain these sports do not take place on the race - course . There is a very nice little course laid down on the Lancers parade ground . The stand is an improvised arrangement , and constitutes an entrenched square , formerly a part of the Regimental Riding School , on which the hospitable tents of the various messes are pitched , and which provide abundant refreshment for all their friends . Everything went off most pleasantly , unless I except the misfortune of Major Chisholme who rode in the chase in all his old finished style - a style that the 9th seem to inherit intuitively , and from a misapprehension of the course , just ran outside of the last fence and coming in first was disqualified . However , Major Chisholme took his disappointment in very good part . The Chariot Race provided great fun and some little disappointment , as no one came to grief , which was looked forward to by many as an inevitable consequence of the race . The eleven chariots turned all the corners safely ; there were no collisions , and in fact the race was void of sensational incident.at of 10

Blue Bell got off very badly , Minette jumped away in front and led the field out merrily with Jeanette , Grisette and Stilton close up . Polly early showed signs of inability to live with her field . Blue Bell gradually made up her lost ground at the start , and one by one passed Polly , Jeanette and Stilton , and when they had travelled about three . quarters of the journey , Minette was still a couple of lengths in front , and Grisette and Blue Bell were running nearly level in second place . Before they came into the straight Blue Bell got on better terms with Minette , and coming up the straight both ponies were running level , when in the last few strides Blue Bell forged a head and won by a length , good third . yies oa initomet

Mr. Weller took Oyster Eye to the front at once and made the pace strong throughout . All but Jeanette made every effort to catch Mr. Weller , but without avail , and he galloped in first with Tottie close up . After the fag end of the lot had apparently come in , it was found Jeanette was still to come , and the spectators ' patience was re warded by a sight of the pony creeping along , and as she managed to save being distanced she was declared winner .

Rover did not go to the post . Minette again took up the running closely attended by Parmesan and Real Jam . Chambermaid it was easy to see could not keep up with the others . Captain Macartney led over all the fences , and on coming up to the third one his pony struck the rail running across it hard , and very nearly came down , but this served as a good lesson to the pony as she jumped very big at all the subsequent jumps .

Major Gough took his ekka out at the best pace his pony could go , but this did not last long , for he was soon after passed by Major Humfrey , whose little grey pony carried on the running , and in spite of the repeated challenges made by various of the other ten jehus , never gave them a chance and won by a full length of his ekka .
