YORK is
the present station of Regimental Sergeant Major N. Van Rens burg - who is believed to be the oldest and most senior South African serving with the British Army .
Lancers Merger Error
Mr. M. LINDSAY ( C. , Solihull ) asked why the officers commanding the 9th and 12th Lancers received the news of their regiment's forthcoming amalgamation from a junior officer and from a civilian who had heard the announcement on the wireless .
" Springbok " -as he is known to comrades among the 9th Lancers and the Queen's Own Yorkshire Yeomanry - has re cently returned to his Burton Stone Lane quarters from a three - month holiday in South Africa .
Mr. SOAMES , War Minister , replied : " A week before the an nouncement the colonels of the regi ments were told of the proposed amalgamation , but were asked not to disclose the information .
" A serious error was made in not informing also the commanding officers before the announcement . I regret that this should have happened . Prompt and full apologies were made to the regiments concerned . "
During his stay , he took the opportunity of renewing the long association of the Ninth Lancers with the City of Pietermaritz burg , Natal , where he had a tremendous welcome from the citizens .
sedan
There , after visiting one of the local schools , St. Mary's Convent , which had adopted the regiment after the South African War , he was received by the Mayor and Mayoress ( Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Downes ) .
He was taken by them on a tour of the city , which included a visit to Settlers ' Park , where each school had planted a tree in honour of all the British Regiments which had visited the city .
The Ninth Lançers , however , also have a strong link with our city . I understand that more than 80 Yorkshiremen among them 15 from York are at present serving with the regiment , which is now in Germany .

BATTLE OF BIDS
HOLDS IT FOR
FIFTH GENERATION
By GEOFFREY LAKE
I forgotten battle
T
was in a long
more than 100 years ago that Troop Ser geant Major David Spence , of the 9th Lancers , won his V.C.
Troop Sergeant Major David Spence with his V.C. and other decorations .
But the fighting spirit of the family is undimmed . Yesterday in Christies '
London sale - room they rallied to win back the medal that had been sold many
years ago .
This time , instead of the be flagged lance that David car ried , the weapon was money £ 550 of it .
That was the win
ning bid by Brixton publican Mr. Thomas Goldsmith , related by marriage to the hero of the Indian Mutiny .
The citation said : " For con spicuous gallantry on 17 Janu ary , 1858 , at Shumshabad , in going to the assistance of Pri vate Kidd , who had been wounded and his horse dis abled , and bringing him out from a large quantity of rebels . "
Tense seconds
For 120 , tense seconds yester day 39 - year - old Mrs. Kitty Goldsmith , great - granddaughter of the V.C. , sat in the sale room with hands clenched as the bidding soared from a £ 100 opening .
Then when the hammer came down on her husband's bid Mrs. Goldsmith said excitedly : " It was a dreadful moment when the bidding went over the £ 500 limit we had set ourselves .
" I could have cried with relief when the bidding stopped at the next £ 50 . "
And Mr. Goldsmith - who keeps The Crown , in Coldhar bour Lane : " I am as proud
as the rest of our family hero . I was determined that the V.C. should come back into the family
" Now , when everyone has seen it , the medal will go into the bank for safe keeping . "
Four generations were at the auction . Among them 70 - year old Mr. Charles Sparks , formerly of the Horse Guards , and his . 66 - year - old brother Albert both grandsons of David Spence .
On the track
the
They had gone to the auction just to keep track of medal . They did not know that Mr. Goldsmith would be bidding for it . But said Charles : " When I saw Kitty's husband hesitate after £ 500 I very nearly put in a bid myself , although I haven't got a penny . "
Also at the auction was one of the hero's two great - great grandsons - 18 - year - old Thomas Goldsmith . Said his mother : " The medal is really for him and his eight - year - old brother Richard . They are the fifth generation . "
During the last war the V.C. was bought by a Mr. S. Wilson . from a Scottish dealer and it was he who sold it yesterday ,
with other medals from his col lection .
During the bidding yesterday ... Mr. Tom Goldsmith , who bought the V.C. , is second from right . Far right is Mr. Charles Sparks , a grandson of the Mutiny hero , and left is Miss Doreen Cripps , a great - granddaughter .
