PUBLIC SCHOOLS CUP .
The Public Schools Cup ( a handicap tourna ment open to teams representing any public school in the United Kingdom - chukkers ) . drew an entry of six teams as against eight last
C
season .
The , first rounds , played on December 1 , resulted in the Old Wykehamists defeating the O'd Harrovians , who received 4 goals , by 7 goals . to six , after a fast , even game , the scores show
ing that it was very difficult to choose between the sides ..
The second game , between the 12th Lancers Old Etonians and the Old Etonians ( recd . 4 1/2 goals ) , was a very interesting match . The 12th Lancers ' team , while galloping hard and hit ting well , were unable to put the ball through the goal - posts , with the result that , nearing the end of the final chukker , their adversaries were leading them by half a goal . A foul then gave the 12th Lancers ' team a free hit from the 40 - yard line and this went wide . Unfortunately , one of the Old Etonian team had sallied forth . from between the flags and the 12th Lancers ' team had another free hit and this time scored .
The match was then over , the 12th Lancers Etonian team winning by six goals to 5 1/2 . It was a good game . Major Kennedy and Capt . Tirsch did yean service for their side of Old Etonians . The 12th Lancers ' forwards hit weil but were not accurate and their back division made things worse by keeping the ball to the sides of the ground and not centreing and giv ing their forwards still more opportunities .
In the semi - finals the Old Wykehamists beat the R.H.A. Old Wellingtonians ( recd . 4 ) by ten goals to six and the 12th Lancers ' Old Etonians beat the Cld Wellingtonians ( recd . 3 1/2 goals ) by 14 goals to 3 1/2 .
The final never reached a high standard of polo and except in the first two chukkers the 12th Lancers ' team had matters all their own way . They started off in what one may venture
to call their usual cautious way , and it was not until the end of the second period that they ! got going and then the issue was never in doubt . The score at the finish was : 12th Lancers ' Old Efonians 9 goals and Old Wykehamists ( recd . 2 1/2 ) four and a half goa.s.
Field Marshal Sir William Birdwood , who is Colonel of the 12th Lancers , and Lady Birdwood were among the spectators of the final game . and Lady Birdwood presented the cups and tro phies to the winners .
The teams were composed as follows : 12th Lancers Old Etonians , Mr. G. Kidston , 1 ; Lt. Col. H. Charrington , 2 ; Mr. F.G. Arkwright , 3 ; Capt . R. Arkwright , back . Old Wykehamists. Mr. K. Savill , 1 ; Mr. A. Horsbrough Porter , 2 ; Capt . Birley , 3 ; Major C. Miller , back .

INTER - REGIMENTAL CUP .
The Inter - Regimental Cup ( a tournament open
to teams representing regiments of Cavalry and Infantry , the Royal Artillery , the R.A.F. , and the Egyptian Army ; six chukkers ) commenced on Monday , three teams competing . The first match was between the 13 / 18th Hussars and the 17 / 21st Lancers . Both teams had made alter ations to the sides that represented them in the Lady Maxwell tournament a fortnight ago . Mr. W. Davis repiaced Mr. Butler ( who had sustained an injury ) in the 13 / 18th team , and Mr. N. Dugdale replaced Mr. Smith - Bingham in the 17 / 21st team .
For the first two chukkers of the game the 13 / 18th Hussars held their opponents , there being ittle if anything to chose between the two sides . In the third chukker the 17 / 21st got the upper hand and during the latter half of the game were in every way superior to their opponents , eventually winning the match oy ten goals to two . The 13 / 18th Hussars gave nothing like such a good display as they did in the Lady Maxwell Cup . They were lacking in combination and their hitting was erratic . The 17 / 21st Lancers , on the other hand , were seen to much greater advantage than previously , their hitting being very long and accurate .
The final , between the 17 / 21st Lancers and the 12th Lancers , was played on Wednesday , and after one of the best fought - out games seen in recent years at Gezira resulted in a victory for the 12th Lancers by six goa's to five . Opin ion was much divided as to whether the 12th Lancers - a very well mounted team - could hold a team not so well mounted but containing thres high - handicap players who had played a good deal together in England . It was a game fuil
of interest . The 12th Lancers took the lead in
the first minute of the match and kept if throughout the whole game . In the first half of the match the 12th Lancers were slightly the better team , while during the latter half there was nothing to choose between the sides . The 12th hit nearly as well as their opponents and their ponies galloped faster . The 17 / 21st , on the other hand , showed some combination and anticipation , which on occasion left their oppo nents guessing at what was happening . The
ultimate winners were leading by two goals at the commencement of the final period , but the 17 / 21st soon drew level and were pressing hard when the bell went .
It was a fast and very hardly contested game throughout which was much enjoyed by a large erowd . Lady Strickland presented the Cup and trophies to the winners . The teams consisted of : 12th Lancers . - Mr . A. Horsbrough - Porter , back ; Mr. F.C. Arkwright , 3 ; Major Hornby , 2 ; Mr. A. Kidston , 1 .
17 / 21st Lancers . - Lt. - Col . V. Lockett , back ; Mr. H. Walford , 3 ; Capt . R.B. Cooke , 2 ; Mr.
N. Dugdale , 1 .

SUBALTERNS ' CUP .
The Subalterns ' Cup , a six chukker tourna- ment , drew an entry of four , -one from each Regiment of the Cavalry Brigade and one from the Royal Artillery . In the preliminary rounds the 13/18 Hussars beat the Royal Artillery , seven goals to three and the 12th . Lancers beat the 17/21 Lancers by eight goals to three . The first game was throughout in favour of the Hus sars , the Royal Artillery only asserting them selves in the final chukker when they scored twice and more than held their own . The second . game between the 12th . Lancers and the 17/21 Lancers produced a far better game than the score indicated . The winning team played really good polo throughout the match , the pace was very fast , and the hitting on both sides was long and accurate . To a better combined and better mounted team the 17/21 Lancers with three young players had to admit defeat .
The final was practically a certainty for the 12th . Lancers team , and any chance that the 18/18 Hussars had was lost when Mr. Cooke . their highest handicapped player , received a blow in the face in the second chukker , and had to retire , the score then being three goals to ona in favour of the lancers . In the rest of the match , Mr. Harrap substituted efficiently for Mr. Cooke , but the team could make no im pression on the 12th . Lancers , who eventually be came easy winners by eleven goals to two . As a match , the game could not compare with that between the two Lancer teams in the first round . The teams in the final were composer of : 12th . Lancers : Mr. G.J. Kidston , Mr. R.W .. Hobson , Mr. F.G.B. Arkwright , and ( Back ) Mr. A.W. Horsbrugh - Porter .
13/18 Hussars : Mr. O. St. J. Loftus , Mr .. W.W.N. Davies , Mr. D.A. Cooke ( succeeded by Mr. R. Harrap ) and ( Back ) Mr. I. Wood .
