POLO
THE OPEN CUP .
The Open Cup - a challenge cup open to all teams , and played in six chukkers - brought to gether the 12th Lancers and the 17 / 21st Lancers for the second time this season , the first meet ing being in the Inter - Regimental Tournament , which the 12th Lancers won by 6 goals to 5 .
The match between these two teams , while providing a very exciting contest , was not such a fast , dashing game as was witnessed in the final of the Inter - Regimental . A high wind , which prevailed throughout the game , made ac curate hitting somewhat difficult . It was any body's game from start to finish , the result be ing in doubt until the final bell went . At the end of the first chukker the 12th were leading by 2 goals to nil . At the end of the second and third chukkers the score was 2 goals all , and at the finish of the fourth chukker , 3 goals all . At the end of the fifth period the 17 / 21st Lancers were leading by 4 goals to 3 and when the final bell went the 17 / 21st had won the Cup by 5 goals to 4. It was a very exciting , hard fought out contest , which the best team on the day's play just managed to win .
The King's Cup .
The match for the King's Cup , which is play ed for by the winners of the Open Cup and a team selected by the Polo Committee , took place 01. Monday , March 23. The Gezira Sporting Club Polo Committee wisely decided that the 12th Lancers ' regimental team should represent the Gezira Sporting Club in this match , and so for the third time this season they met the 17 / 21st Lancers . The 17 / 21st Lancers started the game with great dash , and for the first chukker were alı over their opponents , leading at the end of the period by 3 goals to nil . The 17 / 21st kept up the pressure throughout the two next chuk kers , and when half the match was over were Leading by 4 goals to 2. They had had consider ably the best of the game and looked every inch a winning team , their opponents so far had been playing a spiritless game ; their sticking was poor , and they had been showing little or no combination . A complete change in the game occurred as soon as the fourth chukker began . The 12th Lancers attacked strongly and success fully and , gaining confidence from an initia ! success , added two more goals to their score and finished the chukker leading by 5 goals to
4 , a complete reversal of the situation which existed before this period .
The last two chukkers were full of excitement . Early in the fifth period the 17 / 21st . drew level , and then the 12th . retaliated , leading at the end
f
of the period by 6 goals to 5. As soon as the final period commenced the 17 / 21st drew level , and , playing very well together , looked as they were going to win . An easy opening occur . ring , however , the 12th Lancers took advantage of it , and scored their seventh and winning goal . shortly before the final bell went . It was a very exciting , dashing game , full of incident .. the day's play the 12th Lancers were perhaps lucky to win , as their opponents were the better team the greater part of the game . H.R.H. Prin cess Alice presented the Cup and trophies to the winning team .
