The semi - finals were robbed of a good deal
of their interest as the 17 / 21st Lancers " A " team had to scratch in the match with their " B " team , Lord Arthur Butler not having re covered sufficiently from his injuries to take the field . The remaining tie resulted in the 12th Lancers " A " team somewhat easily beating the Mixed Grill by 6 goals to 2 .
The final , between the 12th Lancers " A " and the 17 / 21st Lancers . " B " , started with the 12th team easily the better side , and at the end of the first chukker the score was 4 goals to 1 in their favour . INTER - REGIMENTAL
TOURNAMENT .
The first tie in this tournament , between the 12th Lancers and the 14 / 20th Hussars , was play ed on January 29 and resulted in a victory for The Hus the 12th Lancers by 13 goals to 3 . sars put up a good fight but were nothing like a match for their redoubtable opponents . The final match , between the 17 / 21st Lancers and the 12th Lancers , resulted in a win for the 12th Lancers ( last year's winners ) by 9 goals to 5. The 12th , contrary to their usual habit , started off very well , having all the best of the first chukker and scoring two goals . The second chukker was very evenly contested , the 17 / 21st Lancers scoring without reply from their opponents . In the third and fourth chukkers the 12th Lancers were at their best , playing a very fine galloping game : they dominated the play and scored five times to their opponents ' once . In the fifth chukker the 17 / 21st improved considerably , hitting a couple of goals , and should have added further to their score if they had taken advantage of two forty yards penalties awarded to them . In the final chukker the 12th Lancers were again to the fore , scoring twice to their adversaries ' once , the score at the end of the match reading : 12th Lancers , 9 goals ; 17 / 21st Lancers , 5 goals .
The final was an interesting game , which was brilliant at times . The 12th Lancers gave a very convincing display . Their team work was good , they went hard , and managed to hit a bumping ball with great accuracy . The 17 / 21st Lancers ' team played extremely well at times , but they had not the combination of their opponents and their hitting was not so accurate .
The teams taking part in this tournament were composed as follows :
12TH LANCERS . - Mr . G. Kidston , Lt. Col. J. Hornby , Mr. F.G. Arkwright , and Mr. A. Hors brugh - Porter .
17 / 21ST LANCERS . - Capt . R. Cooke , Hon . R. Hamilton - Russell , Capt . H. Walford and Mr. O. Smith Bingham .
14 / 20TH HUSSARS . - Major J. Miller , Capt . R. Woodhouse , Mr. J. Chaytor , and Major J. De Wend - Fenton .

THE SUBALTERNS CUP .
The 12th Lancers were the winners of the Su balterns Cup , defeating the 17 / 21st Lancers by 4 goals to 3. The first half of the game was very fast and interesting , with the 17 / 21st Lan cers slightly the better side , and they led at half - time by 3 goals ( one from a free hit ) to 2 . At the beginning of the second half the 12th Lancers pressed continuously during the fourth period but were unable score ; in the fifth pe
riod the 12th , scoring twice in a somewhat sticky chukker , took the lead . Play was some what faster in the last chukker , but no further goals were made , the final score being as stated above .
The 17 / 21st Lancers ' subaltern team played a very good game during the first and best half of the match . They were quick , rode hard , hit well , and created an excellent impression as re gards their combination . In the second half the game became slower and sticky and their play suffered in consequence . The 12th Lan cers did not play up to form in this match ; they did not appear to combine well and their hitting lacked length and accuracy .
The teams were composed as follows. 12TH LANCERS.- Mr. G.J. Kidston , 1 ; Mr. R.W. Hobson , 2 ; Mr. F.G. Arkwright , 3 , and Mr. Horsbrugh - Porter , back .
17 / 21ST LANCERS . Mr. N. Dugdale , 1 ; the Hon . R. Hamilton - Russell , 2 ; Mr. J. Midwood , 3 , and Mr. O. Smith - Bingham , back .
