Meeting
12th ROYAL LANCERS WIN CONGREVE CUP
SGT . VALLIS RIFLE CHAMPION
The Annual Small Arms Meeting of the British Troops in Egypt was held on the Abbassía Ranges from Wednesday until Saturday last week .
This year the Royal Air Force were invited to enter for certain competitions and these were ne cessarily limited for the first time , but it is hoped to open one or two more competitions next year . On the whole , the entries from army units for the different
matches showed little change from last year . The conditions during the meeting were , on the whole , excellent , but a somewhat unsually high wind on the second day is said to have interfered with the shooting of the competit ors for the Individual Rifle Cham pionship .
In the course of a short speech before presenting the prizes , the General Officer Commanding con gratulated the prize winners , par ticularly the winners of the Indi vidual Rifle Championship , Con greve Cup and Small Units Cup , and expressed his thanks to all those concerned with the arrange mments for , and the running of the meeting . He particularly mention ed the Hon . Secretary , Captain C.E. Kent .
In commenting upon the results obtained , the G.O.C. stated that he considered those results to be be low what they ought to be , having regard to the very excellent condi tions existing in Egypt particular ly as regards weather , when com pared with conditions at home . He laid stress on the fact that individual rifleman , whether on horseback or on foot , still remain ed something for which no substi . tute had been found , and probably never would be found ; that all the mechanical contrivances and new engines of war that had been - and are being - produced around the rifleman on the ground and above his head in the air , had their ob ject the shepherding of the indivi dual fighter at the vital point in a sufficient state of preservation to do his job when he got there . He referred to the recent tendency to develop the team weapon - the machine gun - at the expense of the individual fighter , and said a warning word against the danger of letting the individual rifleman become too dependent on all this covering fire to the neglect
of a full use of his own wits , and skill to get forward - otherwise
there would be a danger of our finding ourselves with nothing but covering fire and no attacker to
cover .
In conclusion the G.O.C , thanked those civilian firms in Cairo who had been so kind as to present cups for some of the matches . The results were as follows : -- Individual Rifle Championship : -1 ) Sgt Vallis , 1st Bn . Wiltshire Regt . 190 points ; 2 ) F / O H.R. Dall , No 4 F.T.S. , R.A.F. 188 points .
